Document Conversion Service overview

What is Document Conversion Service?

Document Conversion Service is an on-premises, Windows-based batch document conversion solution that operates as a true background Windows service, requiring no signed-in user to function. Designed for enterprise and mid-size organizations with high-volume, ongoing conversion requirements, it accepts a wide range of input formats including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, PostScript, HTML, AutoCAD (DWG, DWF, DWFX), Outlook MSG, images, and over 500 additional formats via Oracle Outside-In ActiveX support. Output formats include vector and raster PDF, TIFF, JPEG, and other image formats. Target industries include insurance, banking, healthcare, legal, government, education, surveying, and shipping, with deployment on physical or virtual Windows servers in single-server or multi-server clustered configurations.

Document Conversion Service provides multiple integration pathways suited to IT departments and development teams. Watch folder (hot folder) monitoring supports unlimited input directories, each with individual conversion settings and post-conversion command execution. A command line interface supports scheduling and scripting, while the PEERNET.ConvertUtility .NET library exposes conversion functionality to C++, C#, VB, PowerShell, and other compatible languages. Remote conversion is supported via DCOM, allowing client workstations or web servers to route jobs to a central conversion server. Multi-threaded parallel processing runs concurrent conversions across a pool of printers without modifying the system default printer. Clustering and failover across multiple servers deliver load balancing and continuous uptime. OCR support converts scanned PDFs and images into searchable PDFs in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Hebrew, Hindi, and Arabic, with additional language packs available for download.

Conversion behavior in Document Conversion Service is governed by customizable profiles that control output file type, resolution, color depth, compression, page layout, and output location, ensuring consistent, repeatable results at scale. Additional capabilities include automatic combining of multiple files into a single multi-page PDF or TIFF, built-in ZIP compression of output files, auto-repair for PDFs that would otherwise fail, email and SMS notifications for conversion success or failure, and a Drop Converter desktop utility for on-demand drag-and-drop conversion. Outlook MSG conversion includes all email attachments, supporting e-discovery and email archiving workflows. All processing occurs on-premises, keeping documents within the organization's own infrastructure without reliance on cloud or third-party services.
