Gradescope overview

What is Gradescope?

Gradescope is a cloud-based grading and assessment platform designed for high school and higher education instructors, teaching assistants, and institutional administrators. It centralizes the administration, collection, and grading of paper-based exams, quizzes, bubble sheets, programming assignments, and online assignments in a single web-based environment. Grades can be published directly to students and exported to a gradebook via CSV or posted to an LMS gradebook through LTI 1.3-compliant integrations with Blackboard, Brightspace (D2L), Canvas, Moodle, and Sakai. A mobile app (iOS and Android) supports student submission upload. A free tier covers paper-based assignment grading without an institutional license; bubble sheets, online assignments, LMS integration, and AI-assisted features require an institutional license.

Grading workflows are built around flexible, rubric-based scoring with partial credit options and freehand annotation tools on student submissions. Answer grouping allows instructors to grade multiple similar responses simultaneously rather than one at a time. With an institutional license on fixed-template PDF assignments, AI-assisted answer grouping automatically clusters similar student responses, including handwritten English text and math notation such as fractions and integral signs, into suggested groups for instructor review. Programming assignments are supported by an autograder that also allows manual inline code comments. Bubble sheet assignments are scored automatically against an answer key, and multi-version exam management handles assessments with multiple question orderings. Anonymous grading and rubric permissions, which control which course staff can edit rubrics, support consistent, fair evaluation across large courses with multiple graders.

Gradescope provides per-question and per-rubric statistics and item analysis to help instructors identify gaps in student understanding. A structured regrade request workflow manages student-instructor communication about grading decisions. Shared rubrics enforce grading consistency across multiple graders. The platform is subject-agnostic by design, with documented adoption across Math, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Economics, and Business, and is suited to most subject areas and grade levels in K-12 and higher education contexts.
