HOL Guard overview
What is HOL Guard?
HOL Guard is a local-first runtime control layer for AI coding agents. Built by HOL and released as Apache-2.0 open-source software, it helps developers govern what autonomous coding agents can do on a machine before risky actions execute.
Modern AI coding agents can run shell commands, read local files and secrets, change MCP server configuration, and install plugins or skills. HOL Guard addresses that practical control gap with local approvals and receipts — without routing all work through a cloud gateway.
It works with coding agents such as Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and GitHub Copilot CLI. Guard is free and open source under Apache-2.0.
Honest limits: HOL Guard is not a complete prompt-injection preventer, not a secrets manager, not an SCA/dependency scanner replacement, and Cursor/artifact trust is not full pre-exec on every MCP tool call.
