Apitally overview

What is Apitally?

Apitally is an API monitoring and analytics tool built for small engineering teams. It provides real-time visibility into API traffic, errors, and performance through intuitive dashboards, and helps you troubleshoot issues faster with request logs and traces.

Apitally integrates with your application through lightweight, open-source SDKs that work as middleware. No additional infrastructure or agents required. Add a few lines of code, deploy, and data appears on your dashboard within seconds.

Track request volume, error rates, and response times across all your endpoints. Break down metrics by endpoint, consumer, and environment. Performance analysis includes p50, p75, and p95 response time percentiles and Apdex scores. You can also monitor how individual consumers use your API, with per-consumer request volumes and error breakdowns.

Drill down from high-level metrics to individual requests when you need more detail. Request logs capture the full URL, headers, and payloads of API requests and responses, with powerful search and filtering. Correlated application logs and OpenTelemetry-based traces show time breakdowns of database queries, HTTP calls, and other operations during request handling.

Configure threshold-based alerts on 14+ API metrics including requests per minute, error rate, response times, and Apdex. Scope alerts to specific endpoints or consumers. Get notified via email, Slack, or Microsoft Teams. Automatic uptime monitoring detects when your application stops sending heartbeats. Optional HTTP health checks ping your API every minute.

Supported frameworks include FastAPI, Flask, Django REST Framework, Django Ninja, Starlette, Litestar, and BlackSheep for Python; Express, Fastify, NestJS, Hono, Koa, hapi, AdonisJS, Elysia, and H3 for JavaScript; Gin, Echo, Fiber, and Chi for Go; Spring Boot for Java; and ASP.NET Core for .NET. Apitally also supports Cloudflare Workers via serverless SDKs.

Key benefits of using Apitally

- Traffic monitoring: Track request volume over time and break it down by endpoint, consumer, and environment. View requests per minute, error rates, and data transferred. Filter and sort endpoints to identify usage patterns. Export data to CSV.

- Error monitoring: Monitor error rates across your API, individual endpoints, and consumers. View HTTP status code breakdowns per endpoint. Get automatic validation error details for supported frameworks (e.g. Pydantic in FastAPI, Zod in Hono). See exception messages and stack traces for server errors. Integrates with Sentry.

- Performance monitoring: Analyze response times with p50, p75, and p95 percentiles and histograms per endpoint. Measure user satisfaction with Apdex scores. Set response time thresholds globally or per endpoint.

- Consumer insights: Track API adoption by individual consumers. See new vs. returning consumers over time, with per-consumer request volumes and error breakdowns. Organize consumers into groups (e.g. internal vs. external).

- Request logs and traces: Inspect individual API requests with full URL, headers, and payloads. Search and filter by consumer, endpoint, status code, response time, and more. View correlated application logs and OpenTelemetry traces with time breakdowns of database queries and HTTP calls.

- Monitoring and alerts: Configure threshold-based alerts on 14+ API metrics. Scope alerts to specific endpoints or consumers. Receive notifications via email, Slack, or Microsoft Teams. Automatic uptime monitoring via heartbeat checks and optional HTTP health checks every minute.

- Data privacy: By default, Apitally captures only non-sensitive metadata for analytics. Metrics are aggregated client-side before being sent. Request logging is opt-in with built-in masking of sensitive fields. All SDKs are open-source, so you can verify what data is collected.

- Easy setup: Add a few lines of code using lightweight, open-source SDKs. No infrastructure changes required, no dashboards to build. Supports 20+ frameworks across Python, Node.js, Go, .NET, and Java. Data appears on your dashboard within seconds of deployment.
