Pros

It's an incredible programming for examination. I love the perception highlights since it transform drilling information into fun outlines or diagrams.
The ability to filter to the specific metric we are interested in is an amazing feature.
It is a good data analytics and visualization software and its ability to import data from multiples sources is a great feature.

Pros

This is a great way to leverage your data to get better metrics and results. The world is driven by data these days and this is a great way to leverage that.
Very good - SQL Server have so far been a joy to work with. Along with T-SQL support and Azure integration, we're very happy with its performance and environment, including cool data visualization.
I like that it's really stable and it doesn't consume a lot of resources. It's easy to use, highly customizable, and the performance is great.

Cons

Could be frustrating to use when first starting as it would give you an error message but provide no specifics on what is wrong or directions to fix it.
I find it a bit frustrating when presented with a visualisation that doesn't represent the particular angle on the data I am looking for.
Had to take some training courses and even at that it was still confusing.

Cons

For instance, rather than receiving a syntax error, you can receive a weird message if you forget to include a comma while listing the fields you are asking for.
What I don't like most about this is that the error messages can be lacking sometimes leaving you puzzled as to what actually occurred.
For example if you miss a comma while listing out the fields you are querying for you can get a strange error rather than a syntax error.

I love that you can get updated graphical reports from any device and in an agile, simple and parameterized way.

Reviewed 6 years ago

In general what I like about Power BI is that it makes use of the tools that I already know as Excel and SQL Server, and it is integrated into the Microsoft enterprise suite.

Pros

For any executive it is always important to have the information in the moment when it is needed. Power BI helps you to achieve this and easily connects to the data repository, the system already includes a variety of informative graphics that help to present the information of a very visual way In addition the system allows you to delve into the data to see the detail of the origin.

Cons

This tool is so powerful that I can not think of any disadvantage in its use, but if I had to say something it is that you have to be very careful in the base of the information so that the reports that the system transmits are reliable, if the information has problems that is reflected in the reports that the system gives you.

Very easy to adopt BI or Visualization Tool

Reviewed 6 years ago

If you have no enough budget to begin your visualization and data analyze cases and you also don't like other commercial or open source BI or visualization tool, you should try it first. I believe you will like it. BTW, I still think Tabelau is best one tool of visualization and its cost is also expensive.

Pros

Easy to use, get Desktop designer tool and cloud-based server. You also can choice on-premised Power BI server for your local deployment needs.

Cons

Because Power BI Report Server(On-Premises) must use SQL Server Report Services and SQL DB, you must understand how to manage SQL SSRS. At right now, this license model is strange for understanding. I think Power BI Services's license model(Cloud based) is very easy to understand.

Potentially great visual analytics tool

Reviewed 5 years ago

One thing to be careful of is uploading messy data. Otherwise, the reports will not reflect accurate information. However, with clean data, this software can make a great tool for reporting, both in-house and for clients!

Pros

The graphics are attractive and easy for any viewer to make sense of. The features allow you to display information in a variety of ways and quickly analyze trends. We used it in conjunction with Microsoft SQL Server and it worked fine.

Cons

It will take some time to learn how to use the software and explore its functions. When I first started working with Power BI two years ago, the documentation provided by Microsoft was not very helpful and there didn't seem to be a large user community. Hopefully, this has changed for the better.

The data visualization app of the future.

Reviewed 5 years ago

Overall, this app feels like the future of data visualization software as it has functionality that goes beyond what current data visualization apps do. The one wish I have is that Microsoft makes their products fully functional on Apple products so that I can use it at home.

Pros

What I love about Microsoft's Power BI is that it makes data visualization easy as it has many templates and functionalities from creating a pie chart to showing data on a map. It does all of this while working with many apps such as Microsoft SQL Server, Visual Studio, Etc.

Cons

What I like least about this software is that it's "Tooltips" is not as easily editable as other softwares like Tableau.

Pros

The tool takes a little to get used to but fairly straightforward. It is tightly integrated to SQL Server and has excellent security functionality. Availability and cost of Power BI make the product very attractive. It supports the complete Microsoft stack. Supports third party developers for analytics and image tools.

Cons

Microsoft manages the certified training programs which are terrible. Power BI does not bring anything new and interesting graphical to the market - bar charts, pie charts, line graphs . . . Microsoft is way behind other comparable products.

Useful, but very difficult to master

Reviewed 3 years ago

I am using PowerBI on daily basis and switched all our Excels around the team (and soon, the company) to this more powerful and effective way of showing data. It is really painful to obtain what you want, and very often you would think of switching back to Excel, but at the end of the day it gives you much more satisfaction, especially the web presentation part.

Pros

It has tons of connectors and it is really well connected with the most common databases both in the strict sense of the word, like SQL Server, MySQL, etc and in a broader sense, like JIRA or SAP

Cons

It is very complex to master and it has a very perverse way to manage data. It is impossible to use it out of the box, and you need to learn how to code it to do what you need

My experience has been that this is a pain to administer and support. Documentation is not great, and now there are a bunch of access levels and nobody really explains what is needed. They used to make it seem like the free version worked well, but we're finding that it does not.

Pros

PowerBi seems like it has a lot of capabilities to accomplish Business Intelligence.

I don't like how hard it is to get data from AWS into PowerBI and I also dislike that if you want to have real time data you seem to need to install SQL Server on-prem. This is frustrating

Affordable and fairly intuitive (for Excel users)

Reviewed 6 years ago
Pros

Cost. This is definitely great value for the money and beats most of its competitors. Data visualization capabilities are very strong and it integrates to a lot of databases. Microsoft regularly add new features and functionality and since it is a Microsoft product, the integrations are seamless into Excel, etc. No need to know SQL.

Cons

I'd imagine this would be difficult for a non-Excel user to figure out. Not great at handling huge data sets (or data sets that aren't completely cleaned up or checked for accuracy) - I'd recommend Sisense over PowerBI for that. Not a lot of capability to customize/personalize the tool.

Microsoft Power B1 is a Useful Tool in this data driven Digital World of Today

Cons

- There is a little bit of a learning curve involved if you want to get comfortable in deploying more complex features of Power B1 and making maximum use of it.- The license cost of Power B1 may not be viable to everyone who might want to use it.- When dealing with very huge data sets, Power B1 may not be the best option. As a computer scientist, It's very difficult to use

Reviewed 5 years ago

I decided to use Power BI to create a report for an executive summary. It's not easy to use, It took a lot time of mine. I do not recommend it. I think it combines SQL Server Management Studio and Excel. If you good at excel, don't use Power PI, use Excel pivot tables.

Pros

You can manage data and alter data easily. User interface is very familiar to anyone who uses office applications. UX is a kind of weird. Some graphics are useful.

Cons

I can not say it's very easy to use. You can not customize virtualization items that show data related to tables or other data sources. For example, if you want to use "gauge" item from virtualization windows, you will see percentage of number on it. If you know pivot tables on Office Excel, you do not need Power BI.

Microsoft Power BI

One tool for Business intelligence solution

Reviewed 6 years ago

Power BI is awesome for companies which use Microsoft products on daily basis and for experienced excel users. if you got both things this is the low price answer to handle the data of the company.

Pros

To start it is important to tell that Power BI, as is part of Microsoft business suite, is linked to other tools as Excel and SQL Server. Therefore the integration of the data of the company in one place is very easy. Power BI has a very good capabilities for report visualization, having more than 10 different kinds of charts you are able to represent the data of the company in a huge variety of formats making analysis pretty fast and easy. Let me tell you the database connectivity capabilities are outstanding with excellent cloud based connections as well.

Cons

Using Power BI will be challenging if you are not a powerful Excel user. It has no way to clean up wrong data. The system assumes the data you are pulling in has good quality. Power BI sometimes is too complex to use because has many options to handle data and setting it for the first time becomes hard.

The best self-service business analytical tool.

Reviewed 6 days ago

Microsoft Power BI helps me turn raw data into reports and actionable insights as I pull data from various sources, including our local files using the desktop version and online data via the Azure SQL database service. I can transform this data to build interactive reports and dashboards, which I then embed into our internal Power App to visually communicate key metrics and make them available to analytics teams and across the company. Microsoft SQL Server

A popular BI platform that makes the implementation of integrated BI services easy.

Reviewed 6 years ago

Overall Microsoft SQL Server BI would have a solution for most requirements of a typical BI solution. The look & feel, as well as how the tool interacts with its users can be improved.

Pros

Microsoft SQL Server BI offers a full set of tools and functionalities for different phases of a BI solution. Since it is a very popular and widely being used, there are a lot of resources available. Moreover, Microsoft provides tools and services that serves both the upper stream and lower stream of BI services, making the adoption of Microsoft SQL Server BI seamless on existing Microsoft infrastructures.

Cons

A lot of tools are not smart enough and requires intense manual work. For example, SSMS can't recognize and auto-pop newly-created tables/views without restarting; SSIS is not able to refresh the metadata on its own when there is underlying table changes; SSRS offers very limited format control for Excel/PDF export.

Construct all the more Powerful models with SSAS in Visual Studio for enhanced execution

Reviewed 6 years ago

Extremely enhanced combination with different devices, particularly Excel and Power BI. Likewise, fairly more instinctive than more constrained SSAS examples.

Pros

I would prescribe this product. It is somewhat costly, yet in the event that you have the money to so do, put resources into this. It is anything but difficult to utilize and completes a remarkable activity of examining information.

Cons

Except if your information demonstrate depends on an association server, displaying in SSAS won't help with significantly more than uniting different sources into a solitary connection...in which case you either need to keep up a live association or load into memory. So either keep your framework running every minute of every day triple your RAM.

The best database system on the market - both on premises or in Azure

Reviewed 7 years ago

One stop shop kind of a tool for all of our data management needs. Nice integration with Power BI for visualizations.

Pros

Comprehensive functionality - you get database engine, analysis services, integration services and reporting services. All pieces play very nicely with one another. You can easily set up SQL server on premises or in Azure. Very large user community with tons of documentation, tutorials and walkthroughs.

Cons

Enterprise edition is very pricey. Anything that you choose to set up in Azure tends to be pricey as well. Overall decent value for the money as long as you stay away from the Azure world. Storage in Azure (even premium storage) is less powerful than even middle-of-the-road SANs.

A Robust Relational Database System from Microsoft

Reviewed 4 years ago

We used this software for developing a software application for a small scale enterprise consisting of over 50 employes as the licensing model is less expensive compared to other tools. It handled a million transactions every day and the performance wise it is very good.

Pros

This software is very easy to configure on single server as a multi-server environment for high availability, performance and so on. It has great integration capability with other Microsoft BI Space like SSRS, SSIS, SSAS, Azure and Power BI. It can handle huge datasets. The Software is available for the general public in different versions like Developer, Enterprise. It is a great database for small and medium-sized companies.

Cons

The resource used by the SQL Server requires large memory. It doesn't support unstructured data as well as big data technologies. SQL backups require to be stored on the external storage devices other than the local machine where the software is installed.

Enterprise Grade DBMS management tool

Reviewed a year ago

We Implement MS SQL Server for clients to help them manage their DB and also a very key solution when Implementing Sage Enterprise Intelligence a vendor-proprietary BI solution and Power BI for clients and also the SSIS tooling for our ETL processes.

Pros

It's such a robust DBMS without any doubt.

Cons

Just as it is with every enterprise-grade solution like MS SQL Server, the learning curve can be super steep without former training. But regardless it's such a great solution.

Microsoft SQL Server is flexible, has great integration capacity with other software

Reviewed 3 years ago
Pros

Microsoft SQL Server it's very flexible, it has a great capacity to integrate with many data management software such as ERP or BI.

Cons

Like other software, there is a steep learning curve. I know the basics, every day I learn new things about Microsoft SQL Server. It is not a claim, actually this type of situation occurs in almost all programs of its kind.

Solid Data Consolidation Platform

Reviewed 6 years ago

If you are an IT resource, the experience is great.

Pros

SQL Server continues to get better all the time. I use it for helping SMBs consolidate their data for BI/analytics for both on-premise and Azure. The product is solid and never have a problem (especially Azure). If you have used any of the previous versions. Due to its long history and wide use, resources are always available to support the product. The security continues to get better and integrates well into Power BI. Over the last couple of years, Microsoft has also added additional connector services which is great for many IT shops.

Cons

If Microsoft wants to stay relevant in the SMB world they need to make it more automated, intuitive and dummy proof for individuals in Marketing and other disciplines. The product requires some serious IT support which is not always available. I have never been happy with their Training and certification programs (basically they suck). Microsoft dictates how classes are to be run and lost connection with the evolving world.

Microsoft SQL Server

my every day tool which I use, since it exists

Reviewed 2 years ago

I use SQL Server since it was obtained by Microsoft. I am specialized on it and I work only in projects where it is used as core technologie. I am a very experienced architect and developer, based on SQL Server And Microsoft BI.

Pros

It is easy to install. There is also a free Express Edition / Localdb, which has most features of the paid Version. The developer Edition has all Features of the Enterprise Edition. It is very easy to install even several instances on any system. I can solve nearly all tasks, I feel very confident. The documentation is great and it is easy to find answers to questions. It is just my every day tool.

Cons

If there are some heavy queries then the whole instance gets down, often even other instances on the same system. I don't understand why it is not possible to limit the effect. Many features which I would like to use are only available in the enterprise edition. But this edition cost much more than standard and I am forced to use only features of the standard edition. Often I am forced to use quite old version, for example 2016, but the current version is 2019. Again the reason is the price. Customers would need to spent more money for the latest version, therfore they force me to develop based on old versions.
