Pros

This is a really great piece of software that has been well designed and implemented and does a great job in solving many problems and improving productivity.
Overall the product is good, and a number of addons provide good expanded integration and functionality.
It is your own server so it is the best to secure by your own way.

Pros

Nextcloud has been a nice collaborating tool, we can share with easy files across departments. And it has nice sharing features, like making guests upload into a folder.
You are supporting a fabulous network and community of open source developers. Your data can be safe and it stays on hard-drives only you own.
And bonus points that I can tailor the branding with my company logo. Clients love it, I love it, and my colleagues are getting use to hearing me rave about it.

Cons

It seems management had some terrible ideas which is why all the mind-share seems to be behind nextcloud these days.
When first added, there were a few errors that I had to have my host sort, because I couldn't find any documentation on them for the OwnCloud.
In big folders with a lot of files, this take a while and it use a lot of hard drive. So when your OS starts client will kill the HD until finishing the indexing of files.

Cons

The thing I don't care for the most is the lack of documentation for the Freenas / Truenas integrations for when something goes wrong. Also the lack of 2fa out of the box is down side as well.
Search is poor in the sense that there is no integrated setup for this. Integration of Elasticsearch is described, but its way to complicated.
I lack the support of virtual files in the sync client. To my knowledge, there is no info on what the bottleneck in the system is.

My overall experience was good, but I chose to migrate to Nextcloud due to features available at the time.

Pros

At the time I used this software, this was the only option. I have since moved to Nextcloud due to perception of ownCloud losing ground to Nextcloud.

Cons

The upgrade process was less automated vs Nextcloud.

Cheap and Good Alternative to Dropbox

Reviewed 2 years ago

We have been using ownCloud as a Dropbox alternative for my company for years now. We find that owning our own data is better than leaving it on the cloud. Our installation is not accessible without VPN.

Pros

Open-source means lots of plugins and support for the software.

Cons

Not as well contributed lately as compared to NextCloud

Vendor response

Dear Alson, Thanks a lot for your review. We are so happy to know that you find ownCloud convenient and affordable. The Enterprise version of ownCloud offers a host of extra features and support. Pros

owncloud is a well known and stable tool for sharing files. But beside sharing files it´s also an calender-server a, contact-server and if needed a gallery. Owncloud offers a lot of plugins to fit a lot of needs.

Cons

Develoment slows down after the fork of nextcloud. The main focus is towards paying bussiness users.

Not as innovative as Nxtcloud...

Reviewed 5 years ago

Well, frankly speaking I was moving to Nextcloud as soon as that fork was stable.

Pros

Relatively easy setup, easy sharing of files, many addons available to make it more efficient

Cons

Their top developer as well as others moved to the Nextcloud fork some time ago. Most of the development of Owncloud is now focussed on the paid version. Further, I used it quite often in connection with external data storage. Owncloud is was much slower in handling that then Nextcloud.

Pretty good, but Nextcloud is better

Reviewed 3 years ago

I have used it and decided to switch to Nextcloud. OwnCloud is a good software, but not the best option.

Pros

It is self hosted and open source. It has support for Plugins/Apps so you can extend the functionality easily.

Cons

The Website makes the design of the software look very modern, but in reality it is a bit boring. The fork of ownCloud called Nextcloud has a much nicer design, faster development cycles and better comunity engagement. Also on Nextcloud pretty much no features are paid. Everything except adcanced documentation and Premium Support is free.

ownCloud or Nextcloud

Reviewed 4 years ago
Pros

It's great to have your storage in house. The piece of mind that you know where your data is at all times is important, but also, nothing beats local for speed. The clients (I use Windows, Linux and Android clients) make it super easy to sync across different devices - set up once and forget about it!

Cons

I've been going back and forth between ownCloud and Nextcloud (an ownCloud fork) for a couple of years. Started out with ownCloud, switched to Nextcloud, then found out that ownCloud development had caught up and then some, and switched back. Luckily switching is easy but ideally, you want the best of both.

Good file share and collaboration platform

Reviewed 3 years ago

installation instruction are quite good. But you need some expertise to setup several configuration like secure access. Great point. it is completely free and work really well

Pros

The main pro is that this platform is open, the cons is that you need to have good skill to deploy it and configure. Globally most of the feature work really well like the cloud storage, that has a really good access through web, client and mobile app. Nice also the feature to integrate your mail, calendar, food task manager. Integrated editor for document is quite difficult to install. Beware cause you need to have a good machine where to install, with enough resource to make the service reliable

Cons

Owncloud has become a minor stream of this project. Mostly Nextcloud is the new evolution with more update and feature.

Vendor response

Decent but lacking

Reviewed 4 years ago

Overall, we decided to leave OwnCloud in favour of NextCloud. NC has a faster development cycle and seems to listen to the community more when it comes to what they focus their efforts on. While I'm sure OC is good for Enterprise clients, our experience was that it was ONLY for enterprise.

Pros

Overall the product is good, and a number of addons provide good expanded integration and functionality.

Cons

The development focus is generally aimed at Enterprise only, the community needs don't seem to be nearly as important and so addressing feature requests is low on the totem.

Host your own cloud

Reviewed 6 years ago

While I ultimately decided to go with Nextcloud over this one they both work really well and if the idea of an enterprise version appeals to you for business reasons then this is the way to go. Own cloud functions well and does a fantastic job of syncing files between my computers and MY cloud.

Pros

Keep your files onsite. you don't have to relinquish control of your files to some cloud provider to enjoy the sync and sharing privileges that they offer you can run your own cloud. This is a storage platform that stores your files like Dropbox and sync's them with your computer or computers . They have clients for Linux, Mac , Windows, Android and iOS. There is a free version but also there is a paid enterprise version with expanded features. There is also a growing market place of apps that you can install on your instance to expand functionality even further.

Cons

Can be a little complicated to setup initially. Not all features are available in the free/open source version.

Past its prime and headed the wrong direction

Reviewed 4 years ago

Good while still community oriented, now a dead-end product.

Pros

When I implemented ownCloud, it was a neat opensource platform with an active community, with the option of solid support at a fair price. Filesharing with "cloud" providers like Dropbox leaves you at their mercy for security (or lack thereof!) and the annoying clients require re-training on a regular basis. The support costs of the simple ownCloud web interface with drag-drop file uploading were one-time only. Performance was good enough, support was cheap enough, and it was fine for what we used it for.

Cons

Over the course of a few years, the founders left due to "professional managers" messing things up. Support costs went up with no real indication why. I dropped ownCloud paid and switched to a solid commercial product called FileCloud. For "free" OSS I strongly recommend NextCloud, I've helped several friends set it up and they are ecstatic with the results.

We are using NextCloud to mimic Google drive company wide. We are using object store on top of it. This is very efficient and powerful. We are definitely delighted by the product !

Pros

NextCloud is ideal if you would like to share data across multiple region. Simple to setup, easy to use and administer.

Cons

It just came as a fork of ownCloud, this is hard to decide wether to go with ownCloud or NextCloud

Vendor response

Dear user, Thank you for the review on Capterra! We're very glad you are happy with Nextcloud! If you want to get the most out of Nextcloud, don't forget we have Nextcloud Subscriptions available. That improves much on the community help aimed at home users like you'll find on the forums and gives access to additional documentation and capabilities like our Outlook integration, Global Scale for higher scaelability, lower cost and data locality control and more. Take care!

Highly useful for users like me

Reviewed 3 years ago

Been using since OwnCloud and since handed over to NextCloud, i can see lots more improvement. Very happy with this software.

Pros

1. It does what it advertises and does it well 2. Free 4. Security conscious to some extent. The software does recommended as well as let you know what needs to be fixed (Self Hosted) 5. Lots of plugins, for eg. Ability to edit excel document right through your browser or phone without additional software. 6. Documentation for installing on self hosted systems and information is quite variant and easy to understand 7. Applications for mobile devices with very nice features, for eg. When taking a video or photo with your phone, you have the ability to upload the img/vids automatically to your server

Cons

Just one issue. If your server needs an update (Self Hosted) it would be great to have the desktop software notify you rather than login with your admin account on the self-hosted system and look in there.

I've run nextcloud on a personal server allowing me access to lots of fines no matter where I am, without writing about drive space, and without stirring my personal files on someone else's hardware.

Pros

As the successor to owncloud, this is the version that continued the intent of the original creators. Plug ins allow for lots of functions that are expected from file sharing software

Cons

Administering the system requires at least some knowledge of Linux systems, so it's not for everyone, but there's lots of help online.

Nextcloud is the BEST cloud

Reviewed 3 years ago

Nextcloud was easy to find and download, easy to install and get running, and super easy to use. I love having all of my groupware (web meetings, contacts, calendars, and email client) all in one place.

Pros

I've been eyeing Nextcloud for a few years now. Until recently, I would have said that Owncloud is more stable and has better features. But that's all changed... big time! I recently installed Nextcloud to re-evaluate it and it's gotten better... a LOT better... even better than Owncloud. For one thing, right out of the box, Nextcloud includes groupware features like an browser-based email client, shared calendars, and shared contacts. But one plugin stands out - the web-meeting / screen-share plugin! And it's nice! Besides having better features, I like the community better. While Owncloud is open source and free, many of the plugins are not and the community has gotten more commercially oriented as a result. The Nextcloud community is more helpful and user based.

Cons

Wishes: * I wish Nextcloud was themeable. As far as I know, none of the groupware products out there are but that would be a very nice feature. * I wish Nexcloud had better documentation for replacing Owncloud while preserving user accounts.

The Number One-Solution for your personal and private cloud!

Reviewed 3 years ago

It has been a great journey from the very beginning to the current Nextcloud Hub 22. The solution worked out of the box and can be extended with many stable plugins so that there is anything you can dream of which can be implemented - even with writing an app on your own while the number of apps increased week by week!

Pros

Nextcloud appeared from the vast ruins of ownCloud which I always liked, but always hassled with once there was an update. It was vital from the very beginning, it was more open, it was more stable - and everything you needed to get if up and running worked like a charm straight from the scratch. With each version there was not only an evolution, but a refinement of features, an open conversation with the community (something ownCloud really lacked of) and a visible progress. Besides, working and using Nextcloud is just wonderful.

Cons

Nothing that would be worth mentioning - indeed there are no negative aspects regarding my use case and the use case of my customers. It would be nice to get a fully-featured IMAP-server integrated in Nextcloud, but this is a luxury issue. Besides, the company should take its time to grow and to keep the platform stable and maybe there will once be a Nextcloud-Talk app for macOS and Windows?

NextCloud - non-enterprise

Reviewed 3 years ago

We have a positive reaction from our users. They like that files are synced to their pc for offline access, versioning in case something happened to a file.

Pros

A free tier is offered with a large host of features that you won't get on the hosted competiton (Dropbox) except in the higher tiers. Love the versioning features as well as sharing files.

Cons

Upgrading can be difficult although it has come a long way since the split from OwnCloud. Also for those not tech savy the initial setup can be a bit complex, for those I would recommend a docker image.

It is stable ven when you do not update to every single new version. The syncing with the local client keeps data safe.

Cons

Sometimes updates do not work as planned, one can correct the problem but it takes much time to manually restore the functionality. This is not a Nextcloud problem but changing from owncloud to nextcloud is a bit tricky.

Free, open source content management system

Reviewed 5 years ago

Nextcloud is a fork of OwnCloud, but more polished and consumer-friendly. I used to run my own server to provide NAS services. Now I run Nextcloud on a $35 Raspberry PI with a Western Digital portable external hard drive. Nextcloud is the magic that makes it all happen. Nextcloud has a vibrant user community and uses all FOSS components. Best part? Nextcloud has both desktop and mobile clients.

Pros

It's FOSS and it's cool! Easy to use, supports multiple accounts, quotas, and leverages your web browser.

Cons

It's hard to find something not to like about Nextcloud. Maybe the fact that if you like to tinker you can damage the NAS database. But that's half the fun, too!

Great option for online storage

Reviewed 5 years ago

Very good business decision to go with NextCloud. It has a calendar feature we'll be exploring next since we do not use exchange. I have been looking for an easy to use company calendar and am hoping this will be it.

Pros

We just switched over from OwnCloud to NextCloud as we needed better security for my HR files. We are in the process of digitizing everything and I needed to make sure my HR docs were secure from everyone but my HR department. Once my programmer set this up I was able to create the folders that I need, share with whom I need do and have confidence that they are secure from those that should not have access. It is very easy to use.

Cons

We have only been using it a couple of months and so far I have no complaints.

Why not

Reviewed 5 years ago

I love it

Pros

I've been using Nextcloud since v11-12, but before that had been using ownCloud since v5. It's a brilliant way of sharing files across multiple devices and sharing files with others. I was looking for my own version of Dropbox and Nextcloud fits the bill, and some. Some of the more recent Apps really could make this a complete solution, with the Collarora/Onlyoffice integration, Decks, Circles, Passwords, Email, Talk, etc. And it's open source. Like I said at the start, why not?

Cons

I'm not a fan of the new forum/support platform but am struggling to find something I least like about the software

Nextcloud

A great option for customizable cloud storage and collaboration

Reviewed 3 years ago

I've been using NextCloud since it's initial release (I started with OwnCloud before it forked). I love that it is open source and I can set it up on my own server, which is exactly what I've done for both personal use and a non-profit I support. I've been using it in both of those roles for a couple of years now and have been very satisfied. I've even used hosted versions for personal use as well.

Pros

It gives me more flexibility than other cloud storage options in terms of defining different users and user access to different content. Also, the federated storage model is fantastic - I can use much more cost-effective, S3 compliant storage solutions than standard web server storage pricing.

Cons

A few of the user interface design choices are non-standard, such that new users don't always intuit how to use it; but there are only a few such issues.

Great solution for file sharing

Reviewed 7 months ago
Pros

I tried 4 different solutions for my simple use case of keeping family photos on my personal “cloud” aka a computer in my house that has access to the Internet. Complex, feature rich, open source! A fork of ownCloud, it covers way more cases than the one I was looking for, so I decided to use one that does just photo management, but I really appreciated the ease of use and the seamless installation of this software! I am sure, that once I’ll have an use case that Nextcloud offers, it will be my first stop! :)

Cons

Not a con! But for me, it was a _bit_ too feature rich for my liking - I like tools that do one thing, and one thing only. Safely ignore my opinion, nextCloud team does a great job at developing this solution!

analrchy when mutliple folder sharing

Reviewed 5 years ago

The client is good, but it is difficult to uses the history of synced files. Everything is marked as "updated now", and there is no indication if the files have been sent, updated, received, and especially by which user ... In that matter, tools like sharepoint does it better.

Pros

It works on raspberry pi (20 Watts only) and therefore it is possible to build a local storage inside my organization with unlimited disk storage and only on intranet (speed up the transfer and uses less bandwith and energy).

Cons

The sharing of multiple folders to multiple users is difficult to follow. About 100 filders are quickly shared in the owncloud root folder. One should add a folder synchronization to each of them manually on each client to really share the files (otherwise, it is just an authorization to access the files, that usually never reaches the several clients even if available in the root folder). A solution to really share (and put the files on the final user hard drive) should be perfect. example : start the sharing of a folder and select which user and where (in which folder of the final user hierarchy) it should start to synchronize : no action on the final user client (mayba an approval ?)

An Unexpected Gem

Reviewed 5 years ago

I installed Owncloud about 4 years ago, and moved to Nextcloud after the fork. Originally it was kind of a lark-- I had low expectations. Almost immediately I discovered it was a service I use every day, and would never want to do without. Since the fork I've been amazed at the continuing updates which bring better functionality and new features. I'm a committed privacy advocate, and Nextcloud gives me file sharing, contacts, and calendar, in an easy to use interface, all on my own server. Nextcloud Talk, with which I can video conference with my family and business clients, is just icing on the cake. If you haven't tried it, you should, it works amazingly well.

Pros

I'm a big privacy advocate, so it is important to me to keep control of my own files, contacts, and calendar, away from the prying eyes of Google and their ilk. The ability to quickly create a password protected folder, and share it with any client or customer, with full read-write capability, is a feature I've come to depend on, on a daily basis.

Cons

I miss the ability to link my Google Drive and Dropbox storage but, honestly, I didn't use it that much anyway (privacy issues). Less of a big deal anyway, since I've now been able to upgrade my home internet service, and I can run a second version of Nextcloud on a Raspberry Pi at home, and Federate the connection to my main VPS. That means I can connect as much storage as I need. In the past I've had trouble with some of the updates, but that hasn't been an issue for more than a year. I guess I really have no complaints.
