Pros

I have been with ArchiCAD since V4 and watched it grow into a great piece of software for our industry. It is used nearly every day and is a great asset in our office.
ArchiCAD has many great qualities, like their great customer service and mobile access capabilities. It is important for our workflow and it has done wonderfully.
This software is pretty easy to use right away and very powerful. The 3D design ability is great as well.

Pros

The scenes feature is great for architectural presentations and paired with a rendering software like Enscape or Lumion it works like magic. Also workshop and all the add-ons are amazing.
And even the software went through different owner companies, the product is still here, amazing, easy, and stay affordable. Keep going this way please.
Easy to use, with a friendly layout and intuitive commands. Reliable and trustable software for all kind of projects.

Cons

That said, with limited or no support between versions of the same package from the industry standard, coordination can still be a pain.
The inability to create "blocks" is utterly ridiculous and maddening. There are 20 ways to access every objects setting and it will confuse you to no end for the first year.
Poor and complicated tools, takes longer than the competition.

Cons

It's not discovered yet by me what is most disappointed about this product because all I needed to switch to this software is inbuilt within and therefore can't say I'm disappointed in using it.
The only real issue I had with Sketchup was the lack of stp export options. This made it unusable when working with overseas manufacturing vendors.
It causes hours of wasted work to fix and that is time and money. It also affects business by not being able to deliver a serviceable idea to the clients.

ARCHICAD

Great Design Software Easy to use!!!

Reviewed 3 years ago

This software is so delightful! Actually, this software is my first option on BIM world. The render engine quality is amazing and very likely and customizable

Pros

Good user interface; very clear and also enables quick a lot of user adjustment. Flexibility, ease of use and depth of project customization. Design in 2 and 3 dimensions simultaneously. Import and export projects with AutoCad, etc.

Cons

Too many object settings for each object makes learning curve quite steep. Not intuitive enough for quick design experimentation (a la Sketchup). Opening up files take a long time depending on your CPU.

Professional - 3D modelling software

Reviewed 2 years ago

Over-all it is good software, I would recommend the architecture students to learn at least the basics of it.

Pros

- Easy to use software for architects and planners - The software works best for both 2D and 3D drawings. - Good visualizations and fast 3D modeling software.

Cons

- Not easy to for beginners, initially it is a bit challenging not as simple as Google SketchUp. - Not a popular software, so had to work in a team as other students might not be using the same software. - Not compatible with Mac. :(

Best CAD program for Architecture

Reviewed 4 months ago
Pros

There are a lot of tools to use and create a magnific design, after that you can choose to polish the final product further and render with a 3rd party renderer or with Cinerender by Maxon. I honestly like all the benefits this program provides to my weekly activities as an architect... I don't use SketchUp anymore!!

Cons

I think they could improve the graphic limitations for the non GPU users

ARCHICAD

Powerful piece of software that could rival Revit if Graphisoft could shift their approach

Reviewed 2 years ago
Pros

Sometimes I like that archicad is less rigid than Revit. It's easy to create what you want and to get it to look the way it should. Rendering is a breeze. Some of the tools are beyond intuitive. They function exactly the way they should.

Cons

This is BIM light. You will be piecing together your model using slabs to represent everything under the sun. You will fudge things with solid element operations that will keep you up at night. Archicad will force you to be inaccurate unless you fight it to your last breath. You'll curse Archicad's lack of ortho snaps. The inability to create "blocks" is utterly ridiculous and maddening. SketchUp

Easy to use 3D modeling

Reviewed 2 years ago

Given they have a free download for leightweight users it’s hard to coMcLain about this software. I use it a lot for hobby and personal usage, and it excels because if it’s simplicity and because it’s so easy to pick up and get going.

Pros

Intuitive, easy to use, supports slightly more advanced features like layers, section cuts, animations. Great for quickly visualizing eg houses and for testing remodeling and let’s you play around with layouts.

Cons

Not as structured as alternative, more advanced architectural modeling tools like archicad, rhino etc. isn’t for parametric design. They do have rendering plug-ins but not similar advances as other tools.

SketchUp

Good design tool, but lacks features of more robust software.

Reviewed 3 years ago

Helps us design in 3D quickly and its a pretty inexpensive program compared to AutoDesk products.

Pros

This is a very quick way of creating schematic models and site. The presentation quality for an initial design phase is great for most projects and takes no time. The animation abilities are nice and help give a client a "feel" for the design. Pretty easy to learn as well, compared to other architectural software.

Cons

The models can't be taken directly into a BIM software like Revit or ArchiCAD without doing extra work. The rendering abilities aren't great, but can be better with add-ins. This software has its limits and you will find that out quickly.

SketchUp

Great Conceptual Modeling Tool

Reviewed 3 years ago

Great. One additional aspect about the Pro version is that you can import dwgs which allows us to play with concepts that have already been tested in BIM software without bringing in all the additional groups and baggage that comes with models directly exported from Recit or ArchiCAD

Pros

We use Sketchup primarily for testing out initial architectural forms and building client presentations models. It is fast and flexible, and clients love how it allows them to understand our process and engage in the design conversation.

Cons

It is a hard product to share with a team as most people have different methodologies and opinions on what should be grouped, what should be a component, how to set up scenes, etc. It has a lot of straightforward organizational tools to utilize, but if you don’t control them, it can get messy quickly.
