Google Cloud Run overview

What is Google Cloud Run?

Google Cloud Run is a serverless fully managed computing platform that enables developers to build and deploy scalable containerized applications written in any language, including Go, Python, Java, Node.js, .NET, and Ruby. With Google Cloud Run, developers can scale applications automatically. Google Cloud Run is designed to cater to the needs of developers, software engineers, web developers, AI specialists, and IT professionals.

The platform allows users to run frontend and backend services, batch jobs, host large language models (LLMs), and queue processing workloads without the need to manage infrastructure. Users can write code using preferred language, framework, and libraries, package it as a container, and deploy it with a "gcloud run deploy" command. For developers using Go, Node.js, Python, Java, .NET Core, or Ruby, the platform offers a source-based deployment option that builds the container.

Google Cloud Run offers autoscaling capabilities, automatically scaling containers up and down from zero based on demand. This means users only pay for the resources used, making it an ideal solution for a wide range of workloads. Additionally, the platform offers on-demand access to NVIDIA L4 GPUs for running AI inference workloads. For developers who prefer a more granular level of control, Google Cloud Run provides the ability to write and deploy functions directly, providing control over the underlying service configuration.

Key benefits of using Google Cloud Run

Any language, any library, any binary: Built-in support for Node.js, Go, Java, Kotlin, Scala, Python, .Net and Docker. Use the programming language of choice, any language or operating system libraries.

Leverage container workflows and standards: Cloud Run takes any container images and pairs great with the container ecosystem: Cloud Build, Artifact Registry, Docker.

Enhanced developer experience: A simple command‐line and user interface to deploy and manage services. Integration with Cloud Code and Cloud Build for continuous deployments.

Fully managed: No infrastructure to manage: once deployed, Cloud Run manages services.

Per-instance concurrency: Cloud Run automatically scales container instances and allows multiple concurrent requests on each container instance, providing a high level of efficiency.

Fast autoscaling: Cloud Run automatically scales up or down from zero to N depending on traffic, leveraging container image streaming for a fast startup time.

Redundancy:Cloud Run services are regional, automatically replicated across multiple zones.

Security: Mount secrets from Secret Manager. Only deploy trusted container images with Binary Authorization. Bring your own encryption keys. Container instances run in a secure sandbox isolated from other resources, with dedicated identities and permissions.

Ephemeral and persistent storage: Leverage up to 32GiB of ephemeral storage with an in-memory filesystem. Connect to network file systems like Filestore or Cloud Storage FUSE for persistent storage.

Integrated logging and monitoring: Out-of-the-box integration with Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Logging, Cloud Trace, and Error Reporting to ensure the health of an application.

Process web traffic: Expose Cloud Run services publicly to receive web requests.

Process asynchronous events: Set up triggers to receive events from Google services, SaaS, and your own apps using loosely coupled services that react to state changes.

Portability:Cloud Run accepts standard container images and is built on the Knative open-source project, enabling portability of your workloads across platforms.

HTTPS URLs: Each Cloud Run service gets an out-of-the-box stable HTTPS endpoint, with TLS termination handled for you.

Custom domains: Map your services to your own domains.

HTTP/2, WebSockets, and gRPC: Invoke and connect Cloud Run services with HTTP/1.*, HTTP/2, WebSockets, or gRPC (unary and streaming).
