Pros

Clio provides effective and easy invoice creation and it's quite secure. Additionally, its costumer service is just amazing.
Overall, the best time and billing software out there. I have demo'd several and Clio was the clear winner.
Functionality is nearly universal while specially and jusisdiction costomization is great. Easy law firm branding and pre sale marketing is brilliant.

Pros

My overall experience with CosmoLex has been excellent. The initial onboarding process was very useful and the data migration from my previous accounting software program was quite seamless.
The technical support has been excellent, both from their quick responsiveness and their ability to solve any issues I may have.
After trying more than 5 of the other solutions, Cosmolex was the best cost effective solution, giving me a complete package of tools for all aspects of my firm.

Cons

My client started having trouble uploading her documents to me. Assignments went missing, and so deadlines were missed.
I hate when I am asked for instructions on setting up their client portal because I have no instructions to give them.
This is especially clear in light of its competition, Abacus or AbacusNext or AbacusLaw or whatever other evil derivative product they put out there which is all horrible in my experience.

Cons

Then why am I paying to use Cosmolex. Lastly, the customer service has been consistently terrible.
The only difficulty our firm has had has been in discerning how to remove or amend charges to clients once they have been billed and once payment has been received.
Second, when I chatted someone to find this "update" they could not find it or direct me to it. The lack of integrations (and the integrations they are getting) is really problematic.

Clio

It has everything I need for time tracking and task managing, and it translates well from what I'm used to.

Pros

This is not my usual practice management platform (cosmolex), but when I need to use it for cross-practice, there is an easy learning curve translation.

Cons

Don't know that I like this "least" about clio, but it's just not my go-to, due to the lack of accounting integration.

Core of the business process

Reviewed 2 years ago

Clio sits at the center of the firms business process. More than a means to practice management Clio and how we have adapted its integrations have directly increased top line revenue. Beginning as a solo firm that has now grown to a firm or 4 lawyers we have been able to build business process solutions to enhance the customer experience and allow the legal team to focus on clients not administrivia.

Pros

Clio Manage and Grow are, together, an exceptional combination of Practice Management and Business Process. Properly implemented with the right combination of allied Apps they help drive growth and reduce the time spent administratively.

Cons

Without a full accounting package (like Cosmolex or other competitors) their are gaps. We remain committed to Clio yet it is not clear if we will be able to maintain that as we grow unless the accounting issue is resolved.

Satisfied Clio user for 5+ years, recently purchased for additional firm

Reviewed 9 months ago

I am very satisfied with Clio as an online time management option. If you want/need to be 100% in-the-cloud, I would choose and recommend this program most highly to other firms. I prefer it to Bill4Time, CosmoLex, TimeSlips (not online). It also has things I like better than Prolaw (which also is not online). I don't use many of the advanced features Clio offers like integrations, Clio payments or even calendar, tasks because of the way may firms are set up. So, I can't speak to those features.

Pros

I like Clio's simplicity and intuitiveness best. It really is the easiest time management program I have used. If you want to get up and running, like, literally, now, you can purchase Clio online with a push of a button and have open matters and clients/contact in minutes. I originally chose this product 5+ years ago for a small firm I manage, after looking at most of the online time management products...

Cons

Only 1. I haven't mastered LEDES ebililng on Clio yet. At one of my firms, we do only LEDES98 ebilling. If you don't know what this is, stop reading, you will not experience this minor Con. I am having trouble perfecting the LEDES98 txt files and uploading them. Granted, this is my first month of e-billing on Clio at this firm, so I'm sure customer service will correct it for me. It's just that a few other time management programs I have used had no LEDES glitches and uploaded perfectly the first time. The price is also high for small firms. But all online billing programs are.

Great All In One CRM for Lawyers

Reviewed 2 years ago

It's been a great experience and I would highly recommend Cosmolex. I've used Clio as well and greatly prefer Cosmolex to Clio.

Pros

The functionality of the system is good and is relatively easy to use. The support features and articles are great. I've been able to solve most of my own issues without the need to submit a help ticket.

Cons

The accounting portion of the software integrates well, especially with trust accounting. However, the actual accounting side is clunky and harder to use than alternatives such as Quickbooks.

CosmoLex Review

Reviewed 2 years ago

I'm not sure that it's changed anything, since I started out with cloud based services, but it's better than Clio because it doesn't screw up in a major fashion once a quarter or more.

Pros

Stability, integrated accounting, and better support staff. I used Clio for a couple years at my last firm, and I have zero intention of switching back.

Cons

The UI is not exactly intuitive. The search functionality, while robust, is also a bit awkward. Certain things that seem like they might be no-brainer search field options aren't present, and certain items that I would expect to be heavily used by most users aren't as quickly and easily accessed as I would like (for example - the calendar, in my opinion, deserves its own direct access sidebar button).

Time to Switch to a New Service

Reviewed 3 months ago

I regret everyday not simply using Quickbooks and Clio like a lot of other law firms do. We are going to try a demo with a few other products, Abacus and CaseManager, but I really don't think you can go wrong with Quickbooks especially if you want the payroll integrations. We're basically paying twice the price of Clio and other time-management options for accounting software that does not work.

Pros

We liked that it appeared to have a bunch of services wrapped up into one--time-keeping for billing, accounting software similar to Quickbooks with an automatic feed into our accounts, and email archiving/practice management. The time-keeping component works well although you would think it would be easier to do mixed-fee or alternative fee arrangements given that these are the fastest growing in the legal industry.

Cons

The accounting system is a joke. The bank-feed regularly just stops syncing with no notification. We have spent so much time reconciling our books this year as a result of issues that Cosmolex refuses to address claiming its the result of their third-party vendor. We recently needed to transfer a file, and in going to export the emails, we learned that we would need to go into each email, print to...

I needed a one stop shop for case management

Reviewed 5 years ago

As a solo practitioner, I needed a one stop shop for case management, calendaring, and also accounting. I don't have a large staff and I work from two offices, so I needed all of my information available in one place that was accessible from my laptop.

Pros

As a solo practitioner, I needed a one stop shop for case management, calendaring, and also accounting. Rather than pay for Clio (which I had before) and quickbooks, I get both in one with cosmolex.

Cons

1) A report of total hours/billing that includes both invoiced and non invoiced with the total hours and total dollars due at the end. 2) A prettier, more user friendly (don't have to click an edit button to open something) interface. A summary page that allows personalization for what fields are displayed.

This is a time and money saver for any firm.

Reviewed 4 years ago

I was looking for a complete solution to my practice management and accounting needs.

Pros

I tried various other platforms including PCLaw and Clio, but they lacked in usability or functionality compared to CosmoLex. PCLaw is outdated, slow and not cloud based, while Clio lacks firm accounting functionality and though they advertise quickbooks syncing, there are major issues with the syncing that requires a great deal of work by the end user. CosmoLex is able to do virtually everything...

Cons

I would like to see document generation (of all sorts), multiple clients per matter, the ability to generate Client I.D. Forms from the contact information. Also helpful would be the ability to attach scanned receipts, cheques, and bills to accounting entries similar to the functionality in QuickBooks. Some minor efficiency changes like being able to select certain options when creating an entry rather than having to re-open it afterwards.

Reporting capabilities; ease of use; customer support

Reviewed 5 years ago

We were with Timeslips for years, and our IT department required us to move to a cloud-based system. We moved to Clio based on reviews from attorneys we know well. We found out, after using it for a couple months, that it can't do the monthly reporting we needed for corporate reports, so we started looking for a new cloud-based system.

I liked the streamlined interface, the speed, and the integrated accounting.

Reviewed 5 years ago

Prior to signing up for CosmoLex, I was a Clio user. I found their interface to be slow and confusing. I did not like the complexity of the invoicing process and often found myself skipping a lot of the necessary steps to maintain accurate accounting records. Additionally, I found timekeeping and other billing tools to be redundant which led to me spending too much time on the software rather than actually doing the work. I liked the streamlined interface, the speed, and the integrated accounting. My practice is small and I know nothing about accounting. With CosmoLex I am able to do my own accounting because it is so simple and the interface is efficient.

Leaving CosmoLex after 60 frustrating days

Reviewed 10 months ago

I manage 3 small law firms. One of my firms moved from Prolaw to CosmoLex 60 days ago because management wanted to be 100% cloud-based, which Prolaw is not. Unfortunately, my CosmoLex experience has been really frustrating, to say the least. As background, I have used Prolaw for over 20 years, which performs back and front office tasks (like CosmoLex). At another firm, I have used Clio with QBs for about 7 years with lots of success. At a 3rd firm, I use Bill4Time with QBs with lots of success. I really tried to make CosmoLex work for the last 60 days. As the manager of 3 small law firms, I am a stickler for efficiency and productivity. Making small firms competitive with larger firms is a big part of my job. But unfortunately CosmoLex was a huge step backwards in that goal.

Pros

You ALWAYS get a live person in customer service and they are GREAT! I have spent hours and hours on the phone, chat and email with many people in customer service in the last 60 days. It is really easy to get a live person, which is great! And I have been impressed with every single one of them. But unfortunately their answer is almost always: "I'm so sorry, CosmoLex cannot do that, I will add it to the list of features we could add." I haven't been around long enough to know if suggestions are actually ever incorporated into the software. Truthfully, so many features would have to be added to make this a viable program, I just can't wait to see. There is a robust filter / search mechanism. Literally, those are the only good things.

Cons

Everything else. CosmoLex is a great idea, but the execution completely fails at both the accounting and practice management components. Entering data in the software is ridiculously inefficient - from simple time entries, which you have to choose from pulldown, scrolling menus rather than entering data quickly and tabbing through (there is NO tabbing through any data!), to an accounting system that...

This App is Geared More Towards Transactional Law Practices

Reviewed 3 years ago
Pros

Cosmolex is easy to use and to implement. Initially, Customer Support was great, but now not so much. Customer support is still better than any other legal accounting product I have used from Lexis or Westlaw, even Clio. The company is generally pretty good about responding to its customers inquiries; but, you typically have to wait about 4 to 6 hours or the next day or two for a technical support...

Cons

The biggest Con is that there is a clear the lack of usable reports, no way to export client data for analysis and forecasting, third party integrations with Office is a work in progress for 2+ years and Cosmolex should absolutely not be relied on for Case Management in a litigation practice. If you are going to use Cosmolex, I would suggest doing so only for the accounting (w/ trust features) and...
