Great startup product

2018-10-16

Very unclear about the ease of moving all data to upstream ERP systems like Netsuite and FinancialForce.

Pros

Nice solution for startups and small companies. Gusto is great for small company payroll and the interface is easy to use.

Cons

Pricing should be going down, not up. Would have like to see the service features increasing at the entry price point. Really expected unlimited banking transactions and an increase in invoices\bills, not same old. Recent pricing changes starting November 1 looks like they are just aping QB pricing and features, very disappointing. Not as easy to customize and run reports as QB.

Small business book keeping made easy

2018-10-16

Pros

They just partnered with Gusto, so hopping that will simplify payroll tracking even more.

Cons

Seems that most accountants prefer Quickbooks. My firm agreed to let me use Xero since it was already setup, but probably would have made it easier if I was on a platform they already know. Long term will probably have to make a switch, but for now its great.

Integrations are what set it apart

2018-12-12

Overall, I would highly recommend Xero for the fact that it is just as effective as QuickBooks, but has way more integrations that are really effective for a small business owner!

Pros

Another excellent aspect of Xero is that it has several other software integrations for small business, such as Gusto (HR/Payroll) and others.

Cons

The primary issue I have with Xero is that my credit union isn't licensed with them (though it is with Intuit). Consequently, it can't import credits/debits automatically from that account. So Xero may not be able to talk with as many smaller banks/credit unions that are out there. Secondarily, as mentioned above, Xero has a learning curve if you are new to accounting processes and how to categorize transactions.

Xero Payroll is really bad.

2016-08-16

Xero Payroll is painful to use, customer service does not seems to care about feature additions, and it's so far behind full service solutions like Gusto that it doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath.

Pros

included in the cost of the accounting software

Cons

You can't have an employee in one state report to a work location in another state. You can't pay LLC members without using withholding. You can't get anyone on the phone, ever.

Best accounting software for mid-sized businesses

2018-01-09

Pros

Xero is very intuitive and easy to use. As an owner of an accounting company focusing on bookkeeping, I use Xero exclusively. The other competitor in this arena is QBO. While their functionality and integrations are similar, Xero excels with amazing customer service, a more solid platform (they have been in the web-based game longer) and ease of use. All of my clients that have used both prefer Xero as well. Intuit is too large a company and you get thrown around when you have questions. Xero customer services is friendly and quick. They are honestly a pleasure to work with.

Cons

It works but I prefer to use Gusto with the automatic sync for my clients.

The best at what it does

2016-08-29

Full Disclosure: I am an accountant and I recommend Xero to many of my clients. When the expectations are in alignment with the capabilities of the software, then everyone is happy. People get into trouble with ANY software when they jump in thinking they know what it does and are then disappointed. All accounting and ERP software has limitations and Xero is no exception, but what it does, it does well. It provides payables, receivables, bank reconciliation and general ledger as its core functionality. There is a very capable estimating/quoting/order/ process that ties into AR invoices smoothly. But, the requisition/purchase/inventory side is very, very basic. In fact there are no requisitions and the purchase orders are so limited that I recommend you not use them. The inventory is only what is needed to make the sales side functional. So, if you need strong inventory support, you have to use a third-party add-on designed just for this purpose.

Pros

What is good about Xero are 1) Real-time bank feeds and bank reconciliation - this is what scared the pants off of Intuit and forced them to develop new functionality. 2) Xero fully embraces and enables third-party developers to provide niche solutions that have rich interaction with Xero. 3) The features keep getting better and better quarter after quarter. 4) Perhaps my relationship as a partner skews this, but I've had nothing but excellent support from Xero. I can call someone if I have to, but I almost always get issues resolved through technical support in a timely fashion. Some of my favorite add-ons for Xero are GeoOp for field services, Deputy which integrates its scheduling, time and attendance functions with Xero payroll, and Float which projects cashflow. The new reporting and the tags are fantastic.

Cons

What is there now is very well designed to be comprehensive and flexible, but there are situations where a third-party payroll like Gusto will make more sense for your organization.

Recommendations to others considering Xero

Xero is a financial accounting platform designed to provide those core financial services to third-party line-of-business applications. In many situations, especially with micro-businesses, Xero will fill all of your needs; however, you must be aware of when your needs will be constrained by the limitations of the software. If you are looking for advanced financial capabilities like multi-company consolidation and/or inter-company transactions (especially with different functional currencies) then DO NOT look at Xero - you need to be spending a lot more money and you'll be wasting your time until you face up to that. For that, I suggest Sage 300 or Intacct. If you have a real inventory need, like a wholesaler or manufacturer, there are some simply wonderful third-party add-ons. Service companies and field-service companies have a huge selection of very well-designed applications that can improve your operations dramatically for a ridiculously small price. Small businesses can now have capabilities for less than $500 per month that larger companies have to pay well over $80K for. This kind of disruptive technology is allowing small businesses to compete with much larger, well-funded enterprises.

Great experience with Gusto

2018-05-21

Ease of use, syncs with Xero (our accounting software).

Pros

Easy to use and setup. I love that they send email notifications reminding you when to submit payroll especially since we submit bi-weekly and we have only a handful of employees. Syncs seamlessly with our accounting program.

Cons

I can honestly say that I can not think of a single con to this service. Easy to use, easy to setup, no complaints!

The Best Option For Online Payroll

2018-12-06

My experience has been A+. Great product and great support.

Pros

It's hard finding online financial products that don't feel dated and restrained. Gusto is the exception to that. It feels powerful and modern - like good software should be.

Cons

With the recent acquisition by Xero, I'm curious to see how Gusto changes.

The best payroll solution!

2018-11-27

After trying all the major payroll solutions (Xero, Patriot, Quickbooks, Square, Zenefits) this was by far the easiest to setup and the easiest to manage.

Pros

Super easy to use for administrators and employees. Super easy to transfer existing payroll date from a previous provider. Customer support is fast, nice, and very helpful. The website is user friendly.

Cons

Would like to see a mobile app for employees and administrators.

Amazing product

2019-02-04

Pros

Integrates perfectly into Xero and QBO (which is what our team uses) without any sync breaks/issues.

Cons

The ONLY problem I have with Gusto is that you can only select so many accounts to map your employer liabilities to. I've had to work around this due to meeting client's needs/preferences. Other than that, this is an amazing software that I recommend to all clients.

Payroll for small business

2018-12-19

Pros

We were automatically migrated over to Gusto since Xero Payroll is shutting down at the end of 2018.

Cons

Even though it is affordable, it still adds to our business's overhead. They charge extra for basic features that everyone requires -- they have features that we need in the Complete package plan which should really be made available in the Core package plan.

A lifesaver for sole traders

2019-01-11

Pros

Having recently become VAT registered, Gusto has truly made paying and logging payrolls a breeze. It's great to finally see a paperless solution to what can become a nightmare to manage. Fresh and easy-top-use interface; staff are content; and HMRC satisfied, which is all that matters and is why Gusto has my vote!

Cons

I also use Xero and it can be frustrating having to individually download then re-upload reports between the platforms.

Easy to setup and run payroll

2018-03-16

Pros

It integrates with accounting software's such as Xero and QB, which makes reconciling that much easier.

Cons

There is not much I don't like about this software. One thing I would change about it is the integration settings. It is easy to send information to the wrong accounts in your accounting software (if it integrates). I highly recommend having someone with accounting knowledge complete your integration settings.

Gusto is great for small businesses!

2018-08-16

Payroll service providers are supposed to make your life as a small business owner easier. Unfortunately, not all of these providers do so. Gusto, however, is a breath of fresh air in this space. Not only is the system easy to use and integrate, the reporting is simple, the tax management is effective, and the customer service is outstanding. I have recommended (and will continue to recommend) Gusto to other small business owners who are looking to simplify their lives with a better payroll service provider.

Pros

It integrates well with the Xero accounting software and provides reports that are clean and easy to understand.

Cons

I really don't have any complaints about the software. I've been very pleased with my experience.

The easiest, most elegant payroll option for small businesses

2019-03-10

Overall, this is the best payroll processor I've used.

Pros

It integrates really well with Deputy (used for time tracking) and Xero (used for accounting).

Cons

We've Been With Them Since Their Beginning

2018-08-14

I would highly recommend them. Their site is so easy to use compared to other payroll companies (especially ADP). The people are nice and the price is great for all the things you get. They're more than just a payroll company.

Pros

Easy to use. Clear, concise interface. Pricing is reasonable. They make it really easy to open a 401k account for your team even if you're a super small company. Support has usually answered within 24-48 hours. Phone support is available. Integrates relatively easily with accounting software by mapping accounts and exporting as special files.

Cons

I would really like to see direct integration with the major accounting platforms like Quickbooks and Xero. I know, I'm nitpicking in both cases, but I had to think of something...
