I started using Clientexec in-house version (year 2004) to generate invoices for our customers , then we move to Kbilling (year 2006) which is a standalone software, its a great software, but as it is not cloud based it is difficult to manage, then we move to Zoho Books (year 2013) which served most of our needs. I decided to give Xero a run as apparently it can integrate with lots of other apps. I am still trying to move data from Zoho books/Kbilling to Xero , May go back to Zoho Books...

Easy to use and simple for people who have not used this type of software before.
Cloud-based and has an app that can be used from a tablet or phone.
Took some getting used to when going from quick books to xero.

Saves me paying an accountant to do my books!
Flexible and partner drive. I love how there is an open API and people are encouraged to integrate to the software.
Bit pricey for South Africans but that's a small gripe. Some of the reporting could improve but its continually getting better.

Reporting to the ATO and keeping the books transparent.
ATO are using it. My accountant said we had little option, and the club treasurer jumped onto it independently as it was cheaper that the other alternatives.
Still a bit pricey, but the functionality makes a lot of sense. Forced into using it under a short timeline, but that's not Xero's fault.

Xero saves our company time and resources by simplifying the accounting process and allowing you to connect all your accounts.
Xero makes it easy to do your reconciliation.
For the most part, this isn't much to dislike. We use it to reconcile our books.

Managing the books of your small business or side hustle has never been easier
with a free month on signing up to sweeten the deal, this software makes accounting a breeze, it functions according to most tax standards making managing your books almost fun
although the software is excellent for start ups and small to medium enterprises, it does not quite work on large scale operations

I changed back to quick books as it was easier for me and cheaper
It worked for my accountant and that’s what I needed
It was the first time I’d used something like this and I couldn’t find my way around it, I found the catagories didn’t fit for what I needed

Overall it works and keeps my books in good order and is simple to use.
The entire interface is a little more friendly than Quickbooks Online, but takes some getting used to if you're a QB user. I like how you never really have to do a month end reconciliation as you just reconcile each transaction as they come in. I went with Xero because another management software that I had chosen only integrated with Xero, not QBO at the time. So I decided to give it a try and ended up liking it.
The reporting options aren't as customizable as I'm used to in QB. For example, I would like to print out a P&L by month, showing Jan-Current Month to date. But I can only print a monthly report going backwards- showing the current month first and then going back each month. So instead of left to right: Jan-Feb-Mar-Apr etc. It will only give me Apr- Mar - Feb - Jan.

Xero possibly has the best customer service of all, this is where they are really winning. Xero has tons of free quality content and videos with tips and training for business owners and accountants alike. They organise regular meet ups where you can discuss issues and opportunities with your peers. Being apart of the Xero family makes me feel like i am in the "cool club" in high school, only we're cool nerds. If you are the less-bookish accountant and the more customer-oriented fun accountant then this is definitely your type of software.
Difficult to get older clients who are used to invoice books and cheque books to switch over to cloud accounting. (con not exclusive to Xero) If you are switching over from another cloud system, it can take a few hours to get used to the software/app's functions.

From what I hear of people coming from Quickbooks, Xero is a full-featured breath of fresh air. But coming from Freshbooks, it's a nightmare of obscure settings, overly complex processes, and ugly/confusing interface. To be fair, I bank with a local credit union and so can't use the automatic bank reconciliation, which I see as removing a lot of the functionality from the program. Eventually I switched to Zoho Books and haven't looked back... although Zoho doesn't get much press I found it to have the depth of functionality of Xero with the ease-of-use and visually pleasing layout of Freshbooks.
- Built in budgeting software - Widely used by accountants and bookkeepers
- Steep learning curve for the non-professional - Tied to automatic bank feeds - Confusing support

I had a successful 2 years with Xero and because all my information is in here, i won't be switching
This app has all the necessary features to keep your books organized and work with your accountant to file come tax time
It's slightly more expensive and less robust than its biggest competitor on the market which is Quickbooks

The reporting and accounting is really great and helps us keep our books in order for managing the cashflow for our business.
The invoicing didn't offer subscriptions at the time, which was unfortunate, but the accounting is well worth the cost of this software.

I use this to run my (very) small business to run the books. Super easy to use for someone with a limited accounting background.
I can see this not having the features for more medium to large size businesses but then again not sure if they would use this in the first place..

Great program - really easy to use! Makes it easy to collaborate with clients about their books and lets them easily access reports if they'd like.
They need to hurry up with allowing partial/deposit based billing/invoicing. Currently, if you want to receive deposits/partial payments, you need to make separate invoices.

I really like that I can have several people working (me, my assistant, the bookkeeper, AR, the CPA!) within xero and all get real time updates. We used to email files back and forth etc but now we can see who did what and work together and ask the right person about what they did!
I have (and still do) run several small businesses. I have used quick books and have worked with bookkeepers and CPA's. Xero runs my lawfirm's books quite cleanly and very intuitively. Quicbooks could become overwhelming and messy and xero does a really great job at doing all that it is supposed to and adjust as needed. I really like it.
I understand my bookkeeper has some issues with some limitations that she was used to in quickboooks for other clients... I wish I could remember what it was specifically- but I think it has to do with journal entries and fixing past mistakes.

This is the best accounting package I've used. I have used it for 2 years after using myob for 18 years. I had a go at quick books. But Xero is just much easier to use than quick books or myob. And I spend a lot less time on book work. I was very indecisive to change. But it was definaoworth it.
Ease of use. And saves so much time. Excellent.
When I fisrt starting using it and didn't understand something, there is no where to ring and get someone to walk through issues. So really bad for support.

The software is very easy to use, and is very intuitiveness. I find it executes quicker, and the reports I need come up faster.
The only con I can think of at the moment is that Xero is not readily recognized by CPA's. Though all the reports are compatible with the Quick books Accountant.

Overall, Xero is a great option to look at if you think quickbooks is your only option. Their price is comparative, but Xero is a lot easier to use and customize reports.
I really like using Xero. As far as its user interface goes, I like it better than QuickBooks. Xero allows the user to keep track of their books with ease. You are able to also attached documents to the transactions which makes it easy when it comes to audit time. Also, being that it is cloud based, you can access your books wherever you are with an internet connection.
The one con that I have about Xero is that you are not able to make a foreign currency journal entry. You can only make foreign currency bills and invoices.

Financial Book keeping , invoicing, getting paid and submitting my taxes
Solid integrations available for things like expense reports, receipt management, and I can work with outside accountants. Makes tax returns super straight forward as long as I keep mh books reconciled.
I think the worst part is more the legacy banking systems that Xero needs to work with. They have flaky security mechanisms which cause accounts to become disconnected randomly. This is better or worse with various banks and financial institutions. So, not a fault of Xero's possibly

Great functionality at a fantastic price.
The software is easy to use, stacks up well against Xero (the leading accounting package in use in Australia) for functionality, especially at a small-medium business level and at only 20% of the cost.
I'd like it to interface much more easily with external reporting packages, but that's endemic across the whole Zoho range (as they have their own reporting module)

The overall experience with Zoho Books has been disappointing. We were told that they were capable of so much more than what they seem to be able to deliver on. There's no real good workflow capabilities and no real way to automate processes that the user imports over and over again. It's easy to use if you're doing simple bookkeeping
This software is not made for those wanting to automate as much of the workflow as possible. It is also not for businesses hoping to scale with the software. The software link to the bank account and credit card frequently breaks leaving the user to have to sync manually. I have contacted customer service regarding this issue but there does not seem to be a solution. If you're looking to upgrade...
