We have been using this software since October 2014. They are more than a software vendor. They have a staff that is full of knowledgeable professionals that can assist in every facet of our practice. They were the best source for making the transition from ICD9 to ICD 10. They are able to assist in every facet of our practice by dealing with both software issues and or Best Practic Management.

We have been using athenahealth since 2011.  There have been many changes for the better.  Athenahealth strives to be ahead of the curve when it comes to regulatory changes.  They are proactive.  Customer service is very helpful and seem to answer 90% of question up front.  What they can't answer is researched and answered in a timely manner.

Support is unsatisfactory

If I could give negative stars for customer support (after go-live) I would but that is not an option. 
Overall Athena has not lived up to its hype. Document management for a large practice with multiple locations and two specialties is horrendous.   Surgery scheduling module is painful as well. We knew that going into this product but we held out hope that our schedulers would catch on, unfortunately, it just does not work for our practice at this point. The new scheduling module might be better so we are holding out hope. If considering this product make sure you fully understand the buckets and document management. And I mean spend more time learning these pieces of the system than you could have ever possibly imagined.  Overall, It is a struggle.

Athena has helped make it a lot easier to run a small office.  They keep me up to date on everything going on and update everything frequently as needed.

Our office utilizes Athena as our electronic medical record software.

The Athena reminder call service saves our employees time to care for our patient's in the office and not leaving messages all day on a recording.  Especially with multiple doctors in the office now.  Thank you Athena Health for your top notch service.

Tolerating but not happy

Athena's system over-all has helped us with compliance and tracking of accounts receivable.  The rules system and scrubbing process for claims are a work in progress but as you create more billing rules, there are fewer denials on the back end.  
I find the system to be a little slow, but overall is quite functional to our needs.  Our staff has found the system to be easy to use.  We have found the more time you spend creating templates the quicker the patient flow is.
There are some billing issues that were not talked about on the front end such as web access for some payers which delayed payment on claims and resolving that was and continues to be quite time-to consume.  Overall the system works as advertised and has been helpful to our office flow, claims, and A/R.

EHR and Back office Support

I started working w/Athena in Aug 2016. Since then our Admin has been advising me to call or web chat, search online & use the search features Athena has to offer. I have NEVER gotten a question resolved by calling. I end up walking the "helper" through the features & page. This was very upsetting. I've been put on hold for 20 minutes at a time while an "advisor" looks up a solution in their manual. As a result, I hung up in frustration. I then received an e-mail confirming my problem had been resolved. What a joke! That seems like it is just to appease the numbers needed. There are no training manuals, no courses to take & definitely nobody to teach a person how to use this program. A rep. who no longer works for Athena set us up years ago. This is not geared towards a specific practice, which is even more frustrating. Hopefully, you can respect the time I  took to write this review & improve your program. It would be great to receive training as well, or at least an instruction manual.

Although my experience with this particular EMR was brief, I was training staff on it for another office.  I was able to see it s limitations and determine it would be a problem for this practice.  I have had 46 years of medical office management with several different practice management and EMR systems.

Worst Portal No Customer Service

The setup, support of the application for our office went smoothly. We had a bad experience with a company offering free software and that turned into nightmares for our our office staff.

We knew we had to find a proven EMR vendor and athenahealth was the only one to provide real examples of our office functions. We are pleased with the software and the training was easy for us to embrace to work smarter. No more nightmares for my staff. Thank you athenahealth for your support and for helping us run our practice.

Not what you pay for

This is not recommended for a small provider office or if you are using a different software for documentation of the patients health history.

The monthly cost is outrageous given all of the errors they make on posting and the terrible customer support.

The billing side of the service is fantastic and best in class as far as I can tell. They could not do a better job of making sure I get all of my money - payments as well as incentives.

By that time, you will have invested a ridiculous amount of time viewing training videos and probably don't want to start with a new company. Implementation was terrible and disorganized.

I occasionally have trouble navigating the interface of the Athena EMR. Some of the tabs and data input entry areas are organized and labeled in ways that are not totally intuitive at least to me.

It's terrible move on to a different software vendor. I wish they would just fix the minor issues with athenaPractice.
