BIS-C PLUS overview

What is BIS-C PLUS?

BIS-C PLUS is a modular library management system developed by DABIS GmbH to address the operational requirements of libraries, archives, and documentation centers across diverse institutional contexts. It integrates acquisition, cataloging, inventory management, lending, and research functions within a unified system environment. The platform supports institutions ranging from small specialized libraries and corporate archives to academic, public, museum, and hospital libraries as well as research institutes and consortium networks. With more than thirty-five years of development experience, BIS-C PLUS delivers comprehensive library management capabilities.

The system is based on an architecture that allows infinite scalability and flexible expansion without system interruptions or complex reinstallation procedures when technical infrastructures or operating systems change. A browser-based web client provides platform-independent access to all functions without additional software installation, enabling distributed teams and remote work. The cataloging module captures, structures, and manages bibliographic data in compliance with current metadata standards. The loan module manages borrowing transactions, returns, and reservations with configurable lending rules and user group definitions. The acquisition module centralizes procurement processes, order management, budget oversight, and media handling with transparent tracking of expenditures and acquisitions. A responsive Web OPAC delivers cross-platform, accessible research capabilities directly to end users.

BIS-C PLUS supports integrated multilingual operation across five languages with seamless language switching during ongoing operations to meet the needs of international and multilingual user bases. The platform includes features for unique collection types such as melody search with notation and score representation for music collections. It functions as archive software by facilitating digital archive management from indexing through preservation to research and supports both traditional and virtual consortium operations with shared catalogs, data exchange, and coordinated workflows across multiple locations. The underlying freely generable database system enables users to configure tables, parameters, and workflows independently, accommodating complex processes and institution-specific requirements.

The system maintains an open architecture and compliance with common standards and interfaces including ISO/OSI/GNU, TCP/IP, OSF, X/Open to XPG three, IEEE Posix, HTTP/HTTPS, JSON, XML, and OAI-PMH. It supports ISO two three nine point five0 standards for reliable data exchange with partners and networks and derivative protocols such as YAZ SOAP. Data integration functionality enables acquisition from online and offline sources including directories and national bibliographies, with real-time access to standardized data foundations. BIS-C PLUS accommodates all relevant exchange formats and cataloging regulations such as MAB one/90, MAB two, MARC twenty-one with regional variants, XML, JSON, OAI, Dublin Core, METS/MODS, Rules for Alphabetical Cataloging, and Resource Description and Access scenarios one and two. Standard files such as GND, RVK, and DDC are integrated to ensure professional indexing and metadata compliance. The interoperability features ensure sustainable data usability and future-proof operations across collaborative networks and institutional boundaries.
