Datadog vs Logz.io: Why I switched from Logz.io to Datadog

Justin:                                                Hi, I'm Justin, DevOps engineer and my company switched from Logz.io to Datadog. For more reviews like these, please click the link below. Both these products are observability platforms, observability is kind of an umbrella term that covers a lot of different IT monitoring you want to do in a typical environment, everything from your traditional infrastructure monitoring to log analytics, to application performance monitoring and even tracing, they even provide all the data you need under one roof and the ability to switch from one screen to the other, to tie behavior together.
			                                                       Datadog has a very polished out of box experience, if you have a smaller team and you want something that just works, Datadog is a great for it. Datadog makes all of its own software, so they're not just saying, "Hey, we're hosting this thing and you can install this program for this other vendor and this other vendor to link into it," no, it's all Datadog, all the way down, so you've got a single company with a single vision, you can definitely tell from the moment that you've installed the agent, all the way up into the dashboard, so that everything is made by the same people.
			                                                       Logz.io is great if you want to have an ELK stack without the maintenance of running it yourself, additionally that's what they specialized in any way, they later branched out to Prometheus based monitoring and tracing with Jaeger, so they even provide all the greatest open-source tools, without the overhead of doing it yourself, this is great if you have a team that can dedicate just to this sort of monitoring, it does make things a little bit simpler, but there is a lot of personal setup still involved, for instance, you may have heard earlier this year, Elastic, the company behind the Elasticsearch has radically changed it's licensing terms for Elasticsearch and as a result, Logz.io and a number of other companies banded together to create OpenSearch, a fork of that, which is great, I'm all [inaudible] of open-source, but they're not forking the shipping agents, so you've got one organization now making OpenSearch, which they're going to switch to, but if you want a ship logs into that you have to use something from somebody else entirely. 
			                                                       So, you do need to have the time to be able to focus down on things and really set this up by hand, at least to a certain degree. As compared to writing an ELK stack by hand, Logz.io was much easier to get started with, Elasticsearch is resource intensive and requires a bit of a learning curve to really get it to run properly and it's expensive too, so being able to just get started and have something like that ready to go was great and for the Prometheus stuff that we've done as well, it was nice to be able to get that ready to go, but Datadog definitely takes the cake for ease of use in setup, if you're just getting started you can go to their doc page, they give you a one line command you can paste into terminal that will setup and get all the basic integrations all working for you, it's really slick and there's a really nice command line interface for testing whether your data's actually making it there or not.
			                                                       Something that you don't have with stuff that Logz.io depends on for shipping data, it's a really nice advantage to be able to go there and say, "Okay, I bought five integrations, they're all shipping data, I've got two log sources, they're all shipping data," rather than having to do some tracing, guessing, contacting customer service, Datadog definitely makes it easy to get started with, however once you do have things started, Datadog is a little more comprehensive than Logz.io, so the initial learning curve is really easy, getting the agent going and everything like that, but Datadog provides so many things that once you do have the basic setup, there is a bit of a learning curve.
			                                                       When you're looking for this type of software, the number one consideration you ought to think about is your time, do you have time to do stuff by hand or not? If you do, you may be able to make do with open-source software entirely, if you have a team dedicated just to developing and maintaining your ELK stack or your Prometheus environment, or whatever, maybe you don't have time, maybe you just need something that just works and you need something like Datadog then that would give you the ability to just get started very easily with the very minimal features set, you only have one thing to look for, for everything and if you're somewhere in the middle, Logz.io can kind of give you the best of both worlds, it's a little bit easier than running your own ELK stack, but it's not quite as simple as getting started with Datadog.
			                                                       Pricing is also important too, obviously open-source doesn't have any additional cost to it, besides your time, something like Logz.io is pretty reasonably priced for what you get, Datadog is definitely expensive for what you get, so you need to have a fairly decent budget to get started with Datadog.
