Provenance is a cloud-based supply chain traceability application which uses blockchain technology to create a single, secure chain of custody timeline, designed to be tamper-proof. The system can be used to provide customers with a ‘story’ about each product, covering materials, locations, processes, ingredients, and suppliers, and enables businesses to substantiate claims about their products using real-time data.

Users can create a profile for their business in Provenance, and add information about their company, including any awards or certifications they have received. Once the profile is created, users can begin adding products, by importing images from social media pages, inviting teams and suppliers to collaborate, and adding information about the product ingredients, materials, locations, processes, and the associated social or environmental impacts. This creates the product ‘story’, which can be viewed on a map or in a timeline, and embedded within users’ own online ecosystems, such as company websites or e-receipts, or on eCommerce site product pages.

Provenance can also link stories to physical products, with shelf labels, smart tags, and unique URLs for each product. Individual products or batches can be tracked, allowing the creation of separate stories for products which vary on a per-item or per-batch basis.
