Our commitment
Independent research methodology
Our researchers use a mix of verified reviews, independent research, and objective methodologies to bring you selection and ranking information you can trust. While we may earn a referral fee when you visit a provider through our links or speak to an advisor, this has no influence on our research or methodology.
Verified user reviews
GetApp maintains a proprietary database of millions of in-depth, verified user reviews across thousands of products in hundreds of software categories. Our data scientists apply advanced modeling techniques to identify key insights about products based on those reviews. We may also share aggregated ratings and select excerpts from those reviews throughout our site.
Our human moderators verify that reviewers are real people and that reviews are authentic. They use leading tech to analyze text quality and to detect plagiarism and generative AI.
How GetApp ensures transparency
GetApp lists all providers across its website—not just those that pay us—so that users can make informed purchase decisions. GetApp is free for users. Software providers pay us for sponsored profiles to receive web traffic and sales opportunities. Sponsored profiles include a link-out icon that takes users to the provider’s website.

Chroma overview
What is Chroma?
Chroma is an open source search infrastructure platform built for artificial intelligence applications. It provides comprehensive vector, full text, regular expression, and metadata search capabilities through an object storage architecture under an Apache license. The platform supports serverless deployment that eliminates traditional operational overhead while delivering low latency search performance across large multi-tenant indexes. It has been adopted by millions of developers and underpins applications such as retrieval-augmented generation, semantic search, and AI agent frameworks.
It implements multiple search methodologies through a unified interface. This includes lexical retrieval via sparse vector search algorithms BM twenty-five and SPLADE, dense vector semantic similarity matching, full text search with trigram and regular expression support, and metadata filtering with faceted exploration. The query engine utilizes a push-based, morsel-driven architecture written in Rust that delivers median warm query latency of twenty milliseconds and ninetieth percentile latency of twenty-seven milliseconds at three hundred eighty-four dimensions and one hundred thousand vectors. Collections can contain up to five million records while databases can manage one million collections. The system delivers write throughput of thirty megabytes per second per collection and supports concurrent read operations across ten parallel streams. It maintains high recall accuracy across diverse workloads.
Chroma offers dataset forking capabilities that enable version control, A slash B testing, and controlled roll-outs through copy-on-write mechanisms. Intelligent data tiering automatically manages query-aware caching across hot memory, warm solid-state drives, and cold object storage layers. Indexing status monitoring provides real-time progress tracking while read-level controls allow consistency management between index-only and full-read modes. Group-by functionality enables aggregation of search results by metadata keys and metadata arrays support storage of strings, numbers, and booleans. Regular expression operators facilitate pattern-based querying. The JavaScript client version three features a complete rewrite with reduced bundle size and has yielded a marked improvement in data throughput.
Native client libraries for TypeScript, Python, and Rust enable developers to integrate search functionality directly into applications. Automated synchronization tools support ingestion workflows including code repository synchronization that chunks, embeds, and indexes content and web page crawling, scraping, chunking, and embedding. Serverless cloud deployment scales automatically with usage while bring-your-own-cloud deployments within virtual private clouds across public providers separate the data plane from the managed control plane to maintain data sovereignty. Zero-operations management is achieved through managed monitoring, backups, and support services. Security features include compliance with industry standards, multi-region replication, point-in-time recovery, private networking support, and customer-managed encryption keys. Command-line tools provide local and cloud development workflows and deployment guides facilitate self-hosting of the open source architecture.
