Diffblue Cover overview

What is Diffblue Cover?

Diffblue Cover is an on-premises AI platform that autonomously generates and maintains comprehensive Java and Kotlin unit tests without requiring developer input, manual test writing, or iterative prompting. Powered by a reinforcement learning engine, the platform analyzes compiled bytecode, maps classes and methods, generates test candidates, and iteratively refines them to maximize coverage, producing JUnit and TestNG tests guaranteed to compile and pass with no hallucinations. An optional LLM-Augmented Intelligence layer integrates customer-approved large language models via a bring-your-own-model approach, fusing LLM capabilities with the core reinforcement learning engine to improve coverage of complex business logic while preserving deterministic output. All processing occurs entirely within the customer's environment; no code or data is transmitted externally.

The platform delivers multiple deployment surfaces: Cover Plugin provides one-click test generation inside IntelliJ IDE; Cover CLI generates tests for entire projects from the command line, auto-configuring from Maven or Gradle environments; and Cover Pipeline integrates with GitHub, GitLab, Jenkins, Azure, AWS, and other CI systems to automatically create, execute, and update tests on pull and merge requests. Cover Reports, a server-side web application, visualizes test coverage statistics, coverage risk, and testability metrics. Cover Optimize selectively runs only tests relevant to a given code change, reducing local and CI execution time. Cover Refactor suggests and automates code fixes to improve testability, and Test Asset Insights analyzes existing test suites to extract patterns and generate additional idiomatic coverage that follows established conventions.

Diffblue Cover targets Java and Kotlin development teams at enterprises across financial services, healthcare, technology, and manufacturing. Documented customers include large financial institutions, multinational healthcare enterprises, and global technology manufacturers, including organizations using the platform for medical device software to support regulatory compliance. Available in Community (free), Developer, and Enterprise editions, the platform scales from individual developers to large engineering organizations managing complex legacy codebases, supporting Java version migrations, microservices refactoring, and coverage requirements for regulatory audits.
