Fastbooks overview

What is Fastbooks?

Fastbooks is a cloud-based accounting and bookkeeping platform built for freelancers, sole traders, consultants, contractors, small businesses, and agencies. Accessible from any browser on any device with no installation required, it covers the full accounting workflow: invoicing and quotes, bill entry and expense tracking, recurring billing, multi-step payment reminders, double-entry bookkeeping, and financial reporting. A free-forever plan with unlimited invoices and bills requires no credit card, making it accessible to individuals and early-stage businesses. Paid plans start at $20 per month and include a 14-day free trial, with team access scaling from up to 3 users on the Pro plan to unlimited users on the Growth plan.

Fastbooks integrates AI across core bookkeeping tasks. Smart Bill Scanning uses OCR to extract vendor names, amounts, line items, and dates from uploaded bill photos or files, with bulk upload support for processing multiple documents through an inbox-style review queue. Auto-Classification assigns expense accounts to bill line items and refines assignments based on manual corrections and user-defined rules. Contact Matching links scanned vendor names to existing contacts using fuzzy matching. An AI chat assistant answers plain-English questions about cash flow, overdue invoices, and profit margins while retaining conversation history. These capabilities reduce manual data entry without requiring accounting expertise, as double-entry journal entries are generated automatically for every invoice, bill, and payment.

Reporting in Fastbooks covers 13+ financial reports including Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, Trial Balance, General Ledger, Accounts Receivable, Aged Receivables, Revenue by Customer, Invoice Summary, Contact Statement, Accounts Payable, Bill Summary, Tax Summary, and Expense Report, all available without manual setup and exportable to CSV. Additional features include a customisable chart of accounts, full audit trail, role-based team access, an organisation switcher, product and service catalogue, contact management with activity history, CSV data import, dark mode, and bank feeds with Stripe sync on Pro and Growth plans.
