MineTwin overview

What is MineTwin?

MineTwin by Amalgama is a discrete-event simulation and planning software designed to support decision making in underground and open-pit mining operations. It enables modeling, analysis, and optimization of operational processes across a wide range of planning horizons. The platform addresses complex operational constraints and cyclical dependencies inherent in modern mining environments, supporting both strategic capital investment planning and production plan verification on quarterly and annual timeframes.

The software comprises two modules that may be used independently or in conjunction: MineTwin Simulation and MineTwin Planner. The simulation module employs discrete-event modeling to replicate mining operations at a granular level by simulating truck movements, shovel loading, and blasthole drilling. A scenario management environment integrates two-dimensional and three-dimensional mine layout editors, enabling visualization and modification of mine configurations. Data consistency is maintained through more than one hundred built-in validation checks and the ability to import layouts from DXF files with automated correction of geometrical inconsistencies. Tabular inputs may be edited in spreadsheet applications and uploaded back into the system. Simulations that encompass multiple years of operations can be completed within minutes on standard computing hardware, with the option to include or exclude dynamic animation. The simulation engine accounts for development and production mining activities, dynamic evaluation of stope reachability, shift-to-shift scheduling rules, drilling and blasting operations, loading and bogging with vehicle priority and bypass logic, road surface quality and slope considerations, transloading and intermediate ore buffering, queuing at ore passes, rail operation scheduling, ore crushing, skip hoisting, and dependencies between concurrent processes in stopes and between multiple stopes. Statistical experiment capabilities allow resilience testing of mine plans under irregularities and uncertainties modeled as variable distributions. Detailed equipment functioning timelines are displayed in Gantt charts and cumulative flow charts facilitate analysis of ore flow balance. Formatted spreadsheet reports and detailed logs are generated after each simulation experiment to ensure transparency and explainability of results.

The planner module supports operational and mid-term horizon scheduling for both underground and open-pit mines. It enables prioritization of development and production tasks while maintaining work-in-progress buffers at each stage of mining. Scenario comparison functionality is included to facilitate comparative analysis of alternative operational configurations and capital expenditure initiatives.

The platform supports data import from multiple sources, including enterprise asset management systems, mine surveying software, spreadsheets, and text files. Mine layout may be edited in synchronized two-dimensional and three-dimensional views with controls for layer and area visibility, locking, and error correction. Asset information for stopes, ore passes, equipment units, trains, hoists, and other components is organized in a hierarchical tree view grouped by type and model. Property views guide parameter entry to minimize errors. The import capabilities suggest compatibility with standard file formats and the potential for custom integration workflows.
