Independent research methodology
Our researchers use a mix of verified reviews, independent research, and objective methodologies to bring you selection and ranking information you can trust. While we may earn a referral fee when you visit a provider through our links or speak to an advisor, this has no influence on our research or methodology.
Verified user reviews
GetApp maintains a proprietary database of millions of in-depth, verified user reviews across thousands of products in hundreds of software categories. Our data scientists apply advanced modeling techniques to identify key insights about products based on those reviews. We may also share aggregated ratings and select excerpts from those reviews throughout our site.
Our human moderators verify that reviewers are real people and that reviews are authentic. They use leading tech to analyze text quality and to detect plagiarism and generative AI.
How GetApp ensures transparency
GetApp lists all providers across its website—not just those that pay us—so that users can make informed purchase decisions. GetApp is free for users. Software providers pay us for sponsored profiles to receive web traffic and sales opportunities. Sponsored profiles include a link-out icon that takes users to the provider’s website.

Windows Event Log Viewer overview
What is Windows Event Log Viewer?
Windows Event Log Viewer is a desktop event log viewer that reads the journals of a Windows PC or server and explains each record in plain language. Instead of copying an Event ID into a search engine, you click the record and read what happened, why it matters and which related events to check next.
🔰 How to use it
1. Install the app and choose a channel in the tree. Application and System sit at the top, and every provider log lives under Applications and Services Logs.
2. To read a log from elsewhere, use File - Open and pick an .evtx file, or an older .evt file from a legacy system.
3. Set the Level buttons, a Source, an Event ID list such as 41,6008,1074 and a time span. The query is compiled into XPath and executed by Windows, so only matching records arrive.
4. Select a record. The Details pane shows the reference article with its "See also" links above the original Windows text.
5. Save the view as a workspace or a snapshot, then export it to CSV, Excel, HTML or PDF, or straight into SQL Server.
👍 Features
- Built-in reference with 181 events, from Security 4624, 4625, 4648, 4672 and 4720 to System 41, 1074, 6005, 6008 and 7031.
- Event log monitoring with tray alerts, matching on Event ID, level or text, plus threshold rules and a journal of the last 500 trips.
- Deep scan for damaged .evtx files that Windows will not open.
- Merge two channels into one sorted timeline to follow an incident across logs.
- Remote reading over RPC with your admin credentials and a /24 subnet scanner.
- Fifteen ready-made answer presets, a pivot summary by ID or source and an event chain view.
- Row colouring rules and custom columns taken from the event XML.
- Large journals stay responsive: rows are fetched in pages, and you can jump to any date instead of scrolling.
- Files with .evt and .evtx extensions open in the event log viewer with a double click after installation, so a log attached to a ticket is one click away.
📂 What happens to your data
Everything is processed on the local PC. Journals contain user names, host names and IP addresses, and none of it is uploaded. There is no database to set up and no server component, only the desktop app and the WebView2 runtime that Windows already ships.
✅ Who uses this event log viewer
- IT admins in small and mid-size companies without a SIEM.
- Security reviewers checking sign-in failures and privilege use.
- Support engineers who get .evtx files from customers and need an evtx viewer that explains them.
- Auditors who need filtered exports rather than screenshots.
❓ FAQ: questions people ask
What is an event log? It is the record Windows keeps of what happened on a computer, from services starting and failing to sign-ins, updates and crashes. Each entry has an Event ID, a level, a source and a time.
What is Event Viewer used for? Event Viewer is the console built into Windows for reading those records. This Windows event log viewer adds explanations, faster filters, monitoring, recovery of damaged files and exports.
Where is Event Viewer in Windows 11? Type Event Viewer in Start or run eventvwr.msc. The same logs open in this app from its tree without any setup.
Can it watch logs in real time? Yes. Event log monitoring subscribes to the channels you choose, Windows wakes the app on each new record, and matches appear as tray alerts.
ℹ️ Free trial: 10 days. Your own logs are fully browsable, export stops after 20 rows, explanations show their first line, and monitoring, merging and remote machines need a license.
