Pros

I was also reached out to DIRECTLY by a customer service member via email asking if I needed help. I did not need, help, but it was nice to know that the service was available.
The online community is also really great with supporting each other and lending new ideas. The different preview options that are built in are fantastic and load so much faster than Storyline.
I truly enjoy the ability to convert old PowerPoint training decks into exciting & yes to coin a phrase, "Captivating" training for our employees & management.

Pros

Articulate Rise is currently my favorite tool for simple web based training development. Very easy to build beautiful and responsive courses that flow well and are easy to navigate.
Articulate Rise is so easy to use and build out courses. Storyline is much more challenging but the ability to create fun, engaging, interactive and interesting courses is endless.
Customer support is excellent and the community that Articulate has created with E-Learning Heroes is a wonderful resource.

Cons

I found the application would crash every now and then. Nothing I could not work around, but strange to have to experience that in today's world.
Not flexible, slow, design functionalities outdated, poor functionality, can't be used for mobile in reality.
Coming from Articulate Storyline, it's very difficult to get the same type of interactions and logic in Captivate without some considerable tinkering.

Cons

As a graphic designer, I utilize a Mac every day and only being able to use this program on a PC is maddening. And the company has no plans to creat a version for Mac.
Perhaps my biggest pain point is in regards to logging in. Sometimes, I receive errors while logging on.
Our LMS toes the line, hard, on SCORM and the incompatibility caused me misery.

Great for basic eLearning - but not the best

Reviewed 3 years ago

It's good. I spent around 2 years using Captivate as my only tool for eLearning development. I now use Articulate Storyline 360 as my main tool, but have dipped back in to Captivate for features such as the screen recording

Pros

Having come into the eLearning world as a Flash developer, it was so easy to use. If you have nay background in Flash, or any basic programming knowledge, it is highly transferable to the way that Adobe have built captivate. Screen recording feature that captures mouse clicks etc.

Cons

It's just too complicated. Steep learning curve which was difficult for me when trying to train new employees how to use Captivate to develop eLearning. Impossible to train SME's to use for storyboarding etc in a way that has any return on the time that would need to be spent training them (in fairness, they do have the storyboard add on for this function). In comparison to an alternative such as...

To be honest, I expected better from Adobe

Reviewed 4 years ago

Captivate seems like the "black sheep" in Adobe's lineup. If it had more integrations with Adobe CC, it would be a great option, but unfortunately it doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Pros

One endearing quality of Adobe Captivate is their "Live Device Preview" Which allows you to preview your creation on an actual device.

Cons

Coming from Articulate Storyline, it's very difficult to get the same type of interactions and logic in Captivate without some considerable tinkering.

Best tool for simulation and VR modules

Reviewed 3 years ago

Captivate is the best for simulation as compared to any other tool in the market. It the only tool which having 360 interactive output and can implement lots of things which will be in another tool in future.

Pros

There is no match for this tool for simulation of any website of the software. Now it's including a fluid box for responsive design and it works really well on different sized devices. We used to develop content for pure HTML 5 output and it output file works without any flash support.

Cons

Sometimes it becomes stuck when we try to insert assets from the library even if the RAM is 8GB. Other than that it is the best tool available in the market place.

Good for making E-Learning material, but a little dated

Reviewed 4 years ago

I use Adobe Captivate to make training material on our 360 publishing system. I've used it for many years, so have some good experience using it. The online export facilities have got better over time, and have helped me move away from having to distribute large video files.

Pros

I like that I can use Adobe Captivate to quite easily make E-Learning materials, that I can export to be viewed online.

Cons

I would like to see more progress on development of Adobe Captivate, as it is a little dated and could do with some more features.

Cool features. Next level of interactions on 360° media.

Reviewed 4 years ago

With the Virtual capabilities, this tool is a game changer for elearning design, making learning fun and interactive.

Pros

The new and enhanced interactive features are done well in Adobe Captivate. Once the 360° images or videos are imported, it allows course creator to add pointers for information, quizzes, audio files or points to navigate through the course. The learning retention is very high when it is interactive and it also helps in demos, walkthroughs and enables action oriented engaged learning.

Cons

Cache can get a bit heavy when using Video resources. Ensure sufficient memory space.

Adobe Captivate

A powerful player in the e-learning arena

Reviewed 2 years ago

While I am just jumping into the platform as my current job requires it over other software platforms, I am impressed. Having used the entire Adobe CC and other e-learning software, this platform is not difficult to transition into.

Pros

Having used many products for developing e-learning, Captivate is among the top-tier development programs but has a high cost to entry. The platform is powerful and has a lot of nuances that allow for digging deep into options for developing truly custom courses and user experiences.

Cons

While you can dig deeply into advanced interactions, data reporting, etc, the learning curve is immense to begin to understand elements such as advanced actions, keywords, etc. Variables become buried and are not as easy to manipulate as in Articulate Storyline, but they are buried for very good reason in that you can actually do more in Captivate than with its rival program with such features. If I am to further nitpick, I am not excited by the filmstrip display for slide storyline. This is a feature I love in Articulate's e-learning in that non-linear branching is highly encouraged whereas the linear filmstrip does little to entice users to develop complex learning opportunities, reinforcing the linear death by slides commonly seen in virtual learning.

Adobe Captivate

A formidable force in the e-learning sphere

Reviewed a year ago

Adobe Captivate saves me a lot of time with my clients

Pros

While I am new to the platform, I am impressed. My current work demands me to use it over all other operating systems. Having used the entirety of Adobe Creative Cloud and other e-learning products, the switch to this platform is seamless.  Captivate is one of the top-tier development packages, although it has a high entry cost. The platform is robust and rich in nuances, allowing for extensive exploration of alternatives for designing completely customized courses and user interfaces.

Cons

While you may delve extensively into extended interactions, data reporting, and so on, the learning curve for knowing advanced actions, keywords, and so on is enormous. Variables get buried and are not as easy to manipulate as they are in Articulate Replay, but they are buried for a reason: you can really accomplish more with Captivate than you can with its rival application with similar features. To continue nitpicking, I'm not a fan of the filmstrip display used to illustrate the slide tale. This is a feature I admire in Articulate's e-learning since it strongly encourages non-linear branching, while the linear movie clip does little to inspire users to create complex learning opportunities, perpetuating the linear death by slides prevalent in virtual learning.

Power, flexibility, and support!

Reviewed 8 years ago

I've used Adobe Captivate, iSpring, and Articulate Storyline. We used to use only iSpring and Captivate, but I convinced our department to begin using Storyline because if it's ability to control variables and triggers. It opened up a lot more options for the types of courses we were building (test prep courses). By far, Articulate Storyline was the most powerful and gave us the most flexibility. Not long after I began using Storyline, I discovered their awesome user forums and community. I found so much support there that I never wanted to turn back.

An all-encompassing learning creation platform!

Reviewed 4 years ago

The best e-learning development platform on the market, and I've used Captivate and Lectora.

Pros

Articulate 360's suite of learning authoring tools are best-in-class and allow for the creation of truly impactful learning programs. Storyline 360, included in the suite, is the industry-standard for creating e-learning and the program is created in such a way that one is only limited by their imagination.

Articulate Storyline 3

Reviewed 5 months ago

Really good I did switch to captivate 17 when I left Storyline 2 but found that much more difficult to use, so went back to Storyline and got version 3. Great product but perhaps because it was familiar to me as opposed to Captivate.

Pros

I use the standalone Storyline 3 having upgraded from version 2 - whilst this would come as part of 360 it proves more cost-effective to buy the product once rather than a never-ending monthly subscription just to get access to features that we can create ourselves.

Cons

That there is no spell checker within the subtitle option to videos and audio. Have to cut and paste into another product to check sometimes.

The best in rapid eLearning Development

Reviewed 3 years ago

I think Storyline is the absolute pinnacle of rapid eLearning development software. It's intuitive, feature packed and just works well.

Pros

Easy to use. Advanced actions in highly interactive courses are so easy to design and build. I have some previous experience as a developer in flash, so I can be quite creative in my ambitions - as of yet, I'm yet to find anything that can not be built using triggers and variables. Having been a long time user of Adobe Captivate, I often had to add code to achieve similar functionality in my course builds.

Cons

There are times that a course file just corrupts and cannot be saved. This is very infrequent - it has happened to me a few times. Often, you can save it by ensuring you save a new version of the course. However, I have found when working intensively overnight on a course build,. the file corrupted and I had to start the build almost from scratch. It wouldnt discourage me from using this software over any alternatives.

GREAT!! I have a new love for eLearning as a new developer.

Pros

There are several benefits to using Articulate 360! First, I love how you can find answers to your inquiries through the application or YouTube. The teaching videos are amazing! The Content Library helps create very clean and professional content...with limited experience! I find this product a lot easier to navigate than Adobe Captivate. Also, the Rapid eLearning Blog is pretty cool because you learn from other developers and they provide challenges so you can develop your skills.

Cons

When you go to the eLearning community page, its a little overwhelming when you are a newbie and sometimes your search terms don't yield the response you are seeking. Have to learn the language to really take advantage of what the resources offer.

Best authoring tool

Reviewed 9 months ago

I started by using Captivate and was not happy with the results. I found that the training I created and articulate looks more professional and was much easier to author.

Pros

Articulate has a suite of products that will serve any training needs. For a quick training with interactive elements, RISE is what you will need. For a more complex robust training, STORYLINE is best suited. Assets are robust and very numerous.

Cons

The price point is a little high for an individual license. That being said, if that is the only drawback, it is very well worth the price.

My go-to app for rapid elearning

Reviewed 7 years ago

I've used most of the major rapid elearning tools, Captivate, Adobe Presenter, Brainshark, even Articulate Presenter/Engage/Quizmaker but once I got my hands on Storyline there was no looking back. I find it a complete blank slate where my main limitation is not the software capabilities but my imagination. One thing that it's missing is a table editor. Articulate 360 - Easy to Use

Reviewed 2 years ago

Overall, Articulate 360 has been a pretty great product that is helping us reach our eLearning goals.

Pros

Articulate 360 feels like PowerPoint in its user interface and is very intuitive and easy to use. You can put together very smart-looking eLearning very quickly. There is a lot of common functionality built in so you don't have to build from the ground up every time like you do with Adobe Captivate. There's also a very large library of imaging which helps when you need to build quickly. The online support community for Articulate can't be beat. They are there to not only help when you have a problem, but they encourage you to grow as a designer.

Cons

I feel like there are hot keys missing. I wish there was a hotkey to add a text entry field or a hot spot. I also want to be able to move items around the screen one pixel at a time with my mouse rather than having to use CNTRL and SHIFT. The interface feels a lot like PowerPoint to me so while it's easy to use, it's not really very interesting visually, which can matter when you are trying to explain to an executive or stakeholder that building eLearning is a lot more complicated than just building in PowerPoint. The triggers are also a little confusing.

Create Engaging E learning

Reviewed a year ago

Great- once you get past the initial learning phase.

Pros

Articulate is a powerhouse for creating engaging interactive e lessons. There is an abundance of scenes, characters, and poses to choose from. Instructors can easily create assessments, such as true/false, matching, drag and drop, based on pre-created templates. They have a trial version that is limited in characters but gives you access for 60 days.

Cons

Truthfully, I am a newer 360 user. Storyline does have. a bit of a learning curve, but that is to be expected with such a powerful program. I do wish their pricing was more on par with Captivate and they had a perpetual license rather than just a subscription.

Articulate 360 - Integration is Key

Reviewed 6 years ago

With the new release of Articulate 360, I now have all of the Articulate resources under one roof (okay, it's a panel-like thing) and the new features, including super cool professionally illustrated characters, mobile publishing options and a monster (and very diverse) content library just make sense. I've said it before - someone at Articulate is paying attention and they "get" the eLearning industry and where designers, like me, want to go with new ideas. So, you don't need to have Captivate, eLearning Brothers (sorry guys) and Presi on your list of "must-haves" anymore - not once you've made the upgrade to Articulate 360.

Pros

Content Library, triggers (they're awesome and don't require a ton of Action Script to make them work), controls (have you seen Markers, the Dial and the Slider??), diverse character libraries and simple, effective publishing options that make moving the course to an LMS a breeze.

Cons

I wish it had an inline photo editor - then I could REALLY kick Adobe to the curb.

I have used Storyline for around four years now and have been very pleased with it.

It was incredibly easy to start using and has a large support system to help you as you progress.

Pros

I love the ease and layout of Articulate, as anyone who has used powerpoint can easily adapt to the overall screen layout. Articulate can be as basic or as complex as you want to make it and so is a great opening tool for anyone looking to start in E-Learning development. The forums and customer support have been the big difference compared to Captivate.

Cons

The fact that there are numerous versions of Storyline at the moment does make it a bit puzzling for anyone who is new to the industry.

A modern, clean and refined take on a publishing tool.

Reviewed 3 years ago

We switched from Captivate to Storyline and 360. I enjoy it alot more as it feels and looks more modern. The content they provide is above par and well worth it as it all comes together amazingly even when you switch them up. I would just like to see more timing options. Other than that I highly recommend this product.

Pros

My pros are: 1. Easy to understand and user friendly 2. Much smoother when playing back content 3. Allows for the addition of templates which can be downloaded at any time 4. Intergeates well with other software such as a LMS when using published files

Cons

I would like to see the option to allow more audio to be added. For example, if I have two images on the slide, I would like to be able to attach an audio file to either image and not just have one audio file. I would also like to see more timing options.

My bread and butter Elearning package

Reviewed 3 years ago

Overall, it's been great. Our whole training program now relies on Articulate. I could craft courses with Powepoint, and the embedded functionality of the LMS, or use another package but it would take longer and the end product wouldn't be as good. Their support is really good, and even though I've had issues from time to time, We've managed either a workaround or a fix fairly quickly.

Pros

It's very easy to use, almost intuitive. Basically, if you understand how to use powerpoint, you'll be very comfortable with this software. It has a lot of built-in functionality, as compared to Captivate. You can publish nice courses with little effort. Put some effort to learn it's advanced features, and you can craft stunning courses. I've used this since version 1, and Studio before that. It gets better and better. They have a great, useful user forum, and attentive support.

Cons

I've had a couple instances where upgrades broke our lessons, the most recent being with Update 6. It was crashing the lessons if there was a quiz or survey. It was a SCORM issue. Our LMS toes the line, hard, on SCORM and the incompatibility caused me misery. I had to revert. Previous to that, upgrading courses from version 2 to version 3 caused the LMS to stop tracking and send warnings. The solution ended up being not to upgrade, but import the content in a new course. Not totally Articulate's fault, but rather a compatibility issue.

Robust, easy to use, and very intuitive

Reviewed 7 years ago

The software is phenomenally easy to use. I switched to it from Captivate. There is a wonderful users group that is friendly and always happy to help and share. The only thing I would change is the ability to call in to a help desk. There is plenty of help if you submit online or via email, but sometimes I'm too frustrated to try and write out specifically what's wrong because sometimes I don't know what I did wrong.

Increased our Team Productivity Immensely

Reviewed 6 years ago

We were an elearning shop that used Captivate. Advanced developers got along with it okay, but more junior staff really struggled with anything beyond the most basic features. Additionally, publishing to Word for subject matter expert reviews was an awkward process. Switching to Storyline, things clicked. Advanced Developers did things much more quickly. Masterpages and templates really helped...

Great for Rapid Prototyping

Reviewed 8 years ago

Storyline is great for creating quick eLearning modules. The ramp up time is substantially lower than Captivate but there are still many of the same advanced tools available if needed. I am able to turn an idea into a module in a short period of time and changes/edits/modifications are simple and not terribly time consuming. The best feature of all though is the community that is available to answer questions, troubleshoot and provide feedback. The second storyline I ever created won an international award.

All in One E-learning Solution

Reviewed 6 years ago

I have been a fan of the Articulate suite of products since I struggled with Captivate and discovered Storyline 1. The latest incarnation, articulate 360 combines all their products into one subscription model. Essentially this saves me the trouble of making piecemeal purchases from multiple vendors to get all the assets, templates, or specialty software I need. This has made the best rapid e-learning tool on the market even better. Still waiting for a custom avatar creator and a little better video editing. Other than that, the new Articulate 360 does it all!

Pros

Ease of use, integration of all products, expanding library of assets, seamless scaling across devices.

Cons

A bit memory intensive (slows my work computer down).

Best eLearning Authoring Tools on the Market

Reviewed 8 years ago

I've had the opportunity to use all of the major learning authoring tools, and Articulate's software consistently has ranked at the top of the list. My #1 tool is Articulate Storyline, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authoring tool. Pros: - Extremely versatile and powerful - Smallest learning curve - Few/no software bugs/errors/issues - Excellent customer service - Invaluable user/staff community that promotes the sharing of knowledge and helping others to be successful with the software Cons: - I didn't hear about Articulate sooner and had to use Captivate for the beginning of my career.

Easy to use, create complex elearning

Reviewed 7 years ago

Easy to create complex interactions and branching. No need to learn any complex coding-type tools, just read the triggers in plain English. There are a few quirky or missing things. There's no text-to-speech engine, so we are using a very odd combination of software & strange workflow to sort that out. There's no way to publish as a movie/video file, so some projects we're still completing in Captivate. Also we've found that recording audio directly into Storyline limits your options - if you later export that audio, you will get 1 long file, of the original recording, without any of the edits made within the software.

Articulate 360 is the Whole Enchilada

Reviewed 4 years ago

I have been an Articulate user for over 10 years, so I have definitely experienced a lot of change. But from the beginning, I have found Articulate to be much more user friendly (esp for non "techies" like me) than other e-learning authoring software such as Lectora and Captivate. At first I was a little frustrated because instead of the traditional "call in" customer support, Articulate steers its users to Articulate's online user community, E-Learning Heroes. But this resource has proven to be very helpful and valuable to me through the years, and provides the added benefit of interacting with other Articulate users.

Pros

I'm glad that Articulate finally put all of its software apps into one package purchase. No more having to "piece together" all the different pieces you want, and no matter having to pay for them separately and keep up with them separately,

Cons

Now that Articulate has even more additional apps (Multiple authoring apps, including Storyline, Studio Rise; project review app, etc., character resources, etc.), it can be a challenge to keep up with all of them, and with which one you need to/can use for a given project.
