Pros

I was very impressed on how much softwares you can download for this. They are very useful everywhere.
One of the best things I personally love about it is CI/CD. I will definitely encourage you to use it regardless of how you are working - as a team or an individual.
Their search is fast and easy to find open source projects that are well coded. The Github actions for free is nice to have and all the extras you get for free are amazing.

Pros

I feel like a professional developer using it, my code is always backed up and up to date on a beautiful web user interface. I love how the badges look and how it feels colorful.
It is a great collaborative tool that allow us to manage the projects and ensure the progress is on schedule. The reporting function is very helpful for the communications within the organization.
It's an awesome tools, perfect both small projects on a budget or for large applications that need paid features and great support.

Cons

The only downside I found in git was that it had two levels of dependency support, the first two of which were very strict and the third one was very vague: most people are unaware of it.
Github downtime is always a pain to developers. A bad merge is very difficult to revert.
It can be somewhat overwhelming and intimidating when you start using it. It appears much more difficult than it actually is.

Cons

Sometimes , build fails after delay of 20-30 minutes and then i get to see the error. This is obvious that it needs to reach that stage first before displaying the error.
Some features are missing and that's what's missing compared to the direct competitor.
It lacks some features, and sometimes the menus are really confusing and hard to navigate. There have been some occasional crashes too when you need to restart your server to get it up again.

Amazing tool for software organizations

Reviewed 4 years ago

Overall I've been using GitHub for years and would highly recommend it for any company that is serious about software. It's well worth the price.

Pros

The UI is great. Really appreciate the ease of opening pull requests, creating issues on the issue tracker, and having everything in one place.

Cons

It would be nice if there was some sort of integrated CI/CD system like GitLab has. It's also somewhat expensive compared to the main competitors (GitLab, bitbucket, VSTFS etc)

Fierce competitor to Gitlab

I've been satisfied with Github. Most OSS projects are on Github. But our organization moved to gitlab and we are pretty happy with it too.

Pros

Ubiquitous Great Integrations with CI/CD platforms Github Hooks, Collaborative editing and a bunch of other handy features Free tier includes a ton of features

Cons

CI/CD integrations are there but not as strong as Gitlab in terms of a holistic ecosystem. Gitlab is trying to be the all-in-one solution from managing issues, repository, CI/CD pipelines.

A Broke Developer's Friend

I've tried other git repositories (GitLab, BitBucket, Gitea) but I always come back to GitHub.

Pros

Cons

Nothing really. If I have to say something I don't like, it would have to be the "paywall" in front of some new cutting-edge features. (Co-pilot, Codespaces, etc)

Powerful Community Support for Programming

Reviewed 3 years ago

We've been using GitHub for over 6 years for our community projects like Symfony instances, etc. It's a convenient tool and we did appreciate that in 2019, GitHub also started offering free private repositories.

Pros

- one of the best things about GitHub is its vast community of fellow developers - over 40 million users and over 100 million projects are using this code repository platform. It makes it possible to create such projects as Angular 9.0.0, for example, where numerous people across the globe are working as a team to create a better product. - bug tracking and code reviewing is simple to manage, which makes it easier to work on the same projects by a team - unlike BitBucket and GitLab, GitHub also supports SVN repositories, not just git, so that's an advantage as well, in case your project needs svn.

Cons

It's more expensive than BitBucket and GitLab, but it's worth it, so that's not really a disadvantage.

Great alternative to github, best way to make your own Git server

Reviewed 3 years ago

Open as it gets, both on source and the devteam relation to the users, if you want to spin your own Git server for version control locally or an alternative to GitHub this is the best option.

Pros

Easy to use, transparent to the user, open source, fast and you can download it and use it on your own private server, really helpful for companies that want to use Git locally.

Cons

Doesn't have the same amount of add ons options or tools like github, that's what made me go back to Github.

GitHub on-prem

Reviewed 2 years ago

If you are concerned about GitHub privacy, and if your internal devops team is wide, GitLab is the tool that you need. All the power of GitHub in your company. Same CLI, same power, ...

Pros

GitHub on-prem is providing maximum privacy. It is using the same CLI as GitHub, so the learning curve is simply ZERO ;)

Cons

GitLab is not advertising as it should ! If only I could have find it earlier !!!! It is solving our code repository issue. We had concerns to save our code on GitHub.

Great product, especially for the price.

Reviewed 3 years ago

Good, it got the job done for a small collaborative project, and was pretty easy to use for everyone involved.

Pros

Almost as good as GitHub, but with more options for hosting. Especially useful for corporates that can't use a cloud, or want to host their own instance. It's by far better than alternatives, except for GitHub. Easy to use, fast and has most of the features I need.

Cons

Doesn't have integration with everything, and it's mostly a SCM, not much more, unlike GitHub which provides more stuff like GitHub Actions and the package registry.

Best source control for an organization

Reviewed 2 years ago

If your requirements are simple go for github. Gitlab is better than other source controls like, svn and cvs but Github has more features.

Pros

- Good for organizations where you want to keep for repositories private. - It has good features in cheap price.

Cons

- Tortorise git setup has to be installed seperately. This feature should be embedded in gitlab because it is easy to manage the repositories from context menu rather than CLI. - It has a comparatively small community as compared to github.

GitLab is a serious contender

Reviewed 3 years ago

If you're just getting started and don't have a ton invested in Github, Bitbucket or something else, I would seriously consider starting your journey with GitLab. There's so much to like and so many tasks handled.

Pros

It has a really fresh UI and the flow between tasks feels really evolved and refined. It does a lot and has some unique ways of handling things. Github has had to scramble to keep up with the features offered. CI and automation features make it really compelling.

Cons

Other than my familiarity with Github, there wouldn't be a lot of fair negatives to offer here. I could see this product overtaking Github in the future.

Professional Git Solutions

Reviewed 4 years ago
Pros

We use it for our private internal git projects and it's always been secure and easy to create organizations for our whole team to have access. We've been using it for years now and it's always met our needs. They have a pretty high storage limit too!

Cons

There isn't very many integrations in popular tools unlike github.
