What do users say about Unreal Engine?

Reviewers appreciate Unreal Engine for its powerful capabilities in creating high-quality 3D games, realistic graphics, and flexible tools suitable for both beginners and professionals. They value the extensive feature set, strong community support, and frequent updates, noting that the engine is widely used for AAA and indie projects alike. Many highlight the free pricing model, only requiring royalties after reaching significant revenue, as a major advantage.

Users report that Unreal Engine has a steep learning curve, especially for newcomers, due to its complex interface and reliance on C++. They find the software resource-intensive and sometimes overwhelming, but say the Blueprint system helps non-programmers get started. “The physics simulation is among the most powerful components of Unreal, and one of the initial draws that caught my eye when browsing for an engine to use, as I was interested in making physics based puzzle games, yet making your own physics system is wildly difficult. The Unreal system is easy to use and comprehensive, making physics based games easier to make than ever before.”
SW

Steven W.

Laboratory Scientist

“It is easy to simulate physics as all you have to do is specify a physics component and you can select which kind of physics you want to apply to an object. This is extremely important in game development.”

Integrated development environment

Reviewers feel that Unreal Engine's Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is feature-packed and versatile, supporting both Blueprints and C++ programming. They find the IDE comprehensive, allowing for almost all aspects of game development within the editor, including level design, terrain editing, and animation. Users appreciate the ease of debugging, syntax highlighting, and auto-completion. They mention a steep learning curve but value the extensive tutorials and the ability to make real-time code changes. Some note minor errors but overall find the IDE efficient and user-friendly. Of the 19 Unreal Engine users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Integrated Development Environment, 89% rated this feature as important or highly important.

“The UnrealEngine Editor is the hub of developing things in the Unreal Engine. There is a pretty steep learning curve just because the engine can do so much. There are a lot of things that help keep the sheer amount of features manageable like being able to add custom tags and categories to objects and properties. You can do almost everything except write code and generate assets (textures, models, sounds) in the Editor. Its the level designer, terrain editor, object creator and editor, material editor, UI editor, animation editor, AI editor, etc. It really does a lot.”

No-Code

Users report that Unreal Engine's No-Code functionality, primarily through Blueprints, makes game development accessible without needing to write C++ code. They highlight the ease of creating classes, functions, and variables visually, making it intuitive for non-coders. Reviewers appreciate the node-based coding system and its integration from the start, unlike other engines. They find Blueprints powerful and easy to learn, especially for beginners, and note that it allows for creating complex gameplay with simple logic connections, enhancing development enjoyment. Of the 18 Unreal Engine users who gave detailed accounts of their use of No-Code, 89% rated this feature as important or highly important.
