Pros

Technical support is fabulous, both through packaged online help and, on the very few occasions when it has been necessary, direct contact with a technical support representative.
Overall, my experience with Rocket Matter has been very successful in navigating through the website and it is pretty self explanatory which helps when training new employees comes up.
I also love the layout, being able to customize, the drop-down feature helps keep me organized and the page clean.

Pros

We considered other law office management systems, but I was impressed with the comprehensive nature of Abacus and it’s clear and easy system.
I love the ability to change the screens to suit our needs and the ability to create and run simply reports on my own without having to pay a fortune to have one created.
It has grown with us over the years and is consistently updated. In addition it has outstanding customer service.

Cons

It freezes all the time. This is disruptive to my workday.
It defaults to the current date which is slightly annoying when you are entering time for a prior date.
Constant problems with slow service. Accounting feature does not integrate well with QUICKBOOKS.

Cons

Technical support is sad. So many of the people we get have no idea what the problems are or why the program is doing something it should not be.
This can be frustrating and annoying. When updates are made, we are not notified of the changes and must learn how to use or work around those changes.
After we upgraded, AbacusLaw has been terrible. It changed the decade from "19" to "20" in all client birth years, which will have to be corrected manually.

Rocket Matters (RM) is everything you need for your law office and most other practices. My company has been using it since around January 2013 and we are very happy with it. Before I have used ProLaw, Clio, and Abacuslaw but RM blows the others out of the water.

Pros

You can upload documents to every matter/case you have. You can put in transactions. This is specially useful so that any user can see what has been happening in the case. It is also very easy to read unlike ProLaw/Abacuslaw. The system feels clean and clutter free. The system is very easy to use. Adding documents/notes/transactions/billing is very useful. We love that we are able to add tags to matters. Very often you have case numbers, family members that are a part of the case but the name of the case is in someone else's name. Without these it is very difficult to match some correspondences to their cases. There is a build in time you can use to assist you with billing for what you are doing. RM is very easy to teach to new staff. Most things are self explanatory.

Cons

Very few. Sometimes when they redesign the system it can take some getting used to. But this is true of every program out there. And even then they give you over 30 days were you can try the new design and still go back to the old one if you have trouble with it. Sometimes the system can be slow. However this can be a combination of the computer and internet speed. Sometimes you can't duplicate case names. Which makes sense in a way since you don't want to confuse it with another case and make an error, but too often client's have the same name.

It kept me organized and helped me understand organization principles - matter-related for files. It also made retrieval of information easy as emails are tagged to the matter.

Pros

I love the calendar based calendaring, which helped me create some workflows for my firm. In addition, I enjoyed the mobile feature, which kept the information synced to my laptop. The key payment features are also helpful. Also of importance is how everything is attached at a matter, which makes information and relationships easy to find.

Cons

It's a pain to program and get running to specifications, but it is truly customizable if time allowed for it.

I like how it is fairly customizable. As a firm, I know we have not yet learned and used Abacus to its full potential, but every time I learn something new in Abacus, I like it more and more.

Cons

Printing specific matter reports is not easy to do. I wish there was a way to filter the F12 global searches more.

It's great, just those little touch ups and it be perfect!

Pros

Easy to use. I like the tabs on the clients file, makes things easy. Custumer service is always there to help.

Cons

Can't have more than one window open. Sometimes when I search names, it takes a while to appear or don't appear at all until I type the name again. if add a new matter it automatically closes at the end and I have to search for the matter and open it again to add a document or link names

I like that I can add names like a firm rolodex and then identify them as needed in a matter.

Cons

There are some options that we do not utilize because we don't find them too user friendly.

Pros

Without it none of us at the office would be able to do our jobs. It is brilliant. Feature of being able to attach an email to the billing is very helpful.

Cons

I would like to be able to clone a time ticket directly at the email level instead of having to go the time ticket list of the matter.

Abacus is probably best for an office with existing procedures and forms that is willing to make a significant investment into customizing and maintaining Abacus, including having at least one Abacus-designated point person who develops intensive understanding of Abacus. A point about customization: you need to think through your process. For some, a more "plug and play" program may help you to figure out your process.

Pros

Potential flexibility because of many functionalities. We use it every day to track matter activity, coordinate schedules, meet deadlines, retrieve critical information, and bill clients.

Cons

Cannot use many features without hiring expensive Abacus professional because program is not intuitive. Numerous online resources, including knowledge base and trainings, but difficult to find what I need when I need it. Reports and queries: Odd that in our present "plug and play" world, reports are poorly formatted and queries difficult to use. Email integration: Does not integrate with our google suite, only Outlook. Customer Support: Expertise and availability has declined, although still reasonable, if more time consuming.

Customizable Software and Amazing Support

Every single person I've dealt with at Abacus, from initial sale to professional services to tech support, has been patient, professional, knowledgeable, and effective. I've dealt with too many companies who virtually disappear after making the sale. The people at Abacus are nothing like that; their service and support are first rate.

Pros

The software uses a customizable database structure, so you can create or modify forms and fields to make them relevant for the types of cases you handle. In areas where aspects of the program are not wholly intuitive, Abacus's knowledge base and online instructional videos are very helpful. Abacus tech support is amazing.

Cons

AbacusLaw links to MS Outlook, but not to any other email/calendar client (and I had to quit Outlook for another more reliable email/calendar solution because Outlook is extremely problematic in key, basic areas). I feel like I should be able to drop an email message from any email application -- or any file, for that matter -- into an AbacusLaw matter. I do wish the client portal (for exchanging documents with clients) were available.

Pros

The ability to enter notes no matter how far in the future; the ease of finding names of attorneys and the cases we have worked with them on.

Cons

Streamlined efficiency and time savings (we WERE using Time Matters for case database, Timeslips for time and billing, and Quickbooks for accounting, so every matter had to be set up three times).

Pros

The software is pretty intuitive/user-friendly, and customer/tech support is extremely good at fixing the issues that arise.

Cons

A lot of "issues" arise (problems between Outlook and Abacus, Abacus shutting down improperly and requiring me to go to the server to close out open Abacus files and restart Abacus on a more-than-weekly basis, strange messages that even tech support can't figure out regarding printing within Abacus accounting, etc.)

Pros

The features that I do appreciate the most is the links to other information as related to client contact information, relative calendar events and the ease of the tabs with regard to subject matter.

Cons

The only problem with be with the booting of the software upon initialization.

Helps run my day to day efficiently

Pros

Makes calendaring events easy, links emails to files, handles billing. Customer support is helpful and efficient. I haven't had a problem they couldn't walk me through in just a few minutes. Support is helpful for both technical and administrative questions

Cons

Billing software is cumbersome and difficult to use. It is difficult to change time or, particularly, expenses once you've put them in. Email link is a bit "buggy" and doesn't always automatically like my emails to the matter.

Exceptional. The software is useful, practical and designed specifically for attorneys. The customer service is unparalleled across the board. Fast, efficient, professional, knowledgeable. Always there, always helpful and always cheerful (no matter how many times I call!).

Pros

I love the format and the ease with which I can create new matters, organize my contacts and bill my matters. I started with AbacusLaw as a solo practitioner and have grown my firm to include two other attorneys and an admin. The attorneys are all networked in the cloud now, and Abacus was able to grow with me and provide additional support solutions for our small firm. The Abacus Accounting has given me great billing capacity and kept my accounts in order.

Cons

I have not found the forms functionality very accessible. I was an experienced attorney when I signed on with AbacusLaw, so this is not something that I particularly need.

Pros

I’ve never had an issue with this software. I can honestly say it’s very reliable and gets the job done. It is also very easy to use and users need minimal to no training/guidance.

Cons

My only complaint is that it looks quite outdated. If that doesn’t matter to you, then this is the software for you. But I personally am not a fan of working with a software that looks like it’s from a different decade.

I have used Abacus for over 10 years, and have found it to be extremely intuitive to use.

I am a very effective in my billing using this software.

Pros

When using Abacus to manage cases, the process is as simple as doing the client work, then billing the time, and finally creating an event to either follow up on what was done, to perform an additional task, or to appear in court on a specific date. I can then move from client to client, not have to remember anything because I will always know the exact status of each client's matter. And if a client calls, I don't have to pull a file to update them on the status of their matter.

Cons

With the most recent version we have had an unusual number of things that are not working the same way they worked prior to the update. While the support staff seems capable, they are on the West Coast and I am on the East Coast, so I end up staying at the end of the day to resolve issues.

Most important... CONSOLIDATION! Abacus Law integrated the case management, "tickler" by rule, forms, contacts, matter, ACCOUNTING AND BILLING, all into a single easy to use and learn package. Changes in one area and iterated throughout the software. We almost never and disparate or duplicate data. Well Done!

Pros

Ease of use, consistency in operation, great support. In nearly our entire use, different versions and our transition to the "cloud" last year, our up-time has been nearly 99%. I was worried about transitioning to APC (cloud), but the support and transition and setup was painless and well executed. Our employees barely noticed the difference, but for, the Remote Desktop link... Very well done!

Cons

There are a few very minor custom things, but overall, nothing worth mentioning. As I said, I have been a happy customer for about 10 years, seen the growing pains, and various upgraded and improvements, each being better than the previous. We've been quite pleased.

Pros

We need a very large database and software to support our cases and clients and Abacus is capable of doing that. I like the way that all emails can be linked to a matter and client, all documents and files can be stored in a shared directory for easy access.

Cons

Limited number of characters you can type in, when printing, characters get truncated.

Essentially a very good product!

Generally, Abacus is a very good program for our needs. We are able to keep client/matter information in one location that can be accessed by everyone offsite. Recently, I was involved in a trial in Federal Court and it was very helpful to be able to access our file without delay.

Pros

Generally Abacus Private Cloud is easy to use and is fairly intuitive to move around. Setting up new files, adding and/or linking appropriate parties/individuals, attaching emails are all very simple.

Cons

Fairly frequently the system slows down such that you type ahead of the action on the screen. This can be frustrating and annoying. When updates are made, we are not notified of the changes and must learn how to use or work around those changes. Sometimes it feels as if changes are made without talking with users to see if the change will help or hurt.

Pros

What I like most about this software is that it is very user friendly. I am not very tech savvy so this software is very nice and easy to use. The support staff are very friendly, courteous and helpful. They always have been able to handle and fix any questions or issues that our office have come across.

Cons

the one thing i do not like about this software is the accounting section. When I am cutting a check for a vendor, I can not add matters together to put into one check, I have to cut separate checks. To be able to put more than one matter on a particular vendor's check would make cutting checks easier.

Pros

The seamless links between matter and name, the reporting functions, and the search functions are excellent for the price. The tech support for both AbacusLaw and the cloud service (APC) are excellent, at ANY price. the integration with Office, and the addition of other programs like Adobe Acrobat and Quickbooks make this a no-brainer.

Cons

I'd like a little more attention to suggested new features or capabilities I come up with.

Abacus makes accounting easy.

Pros

Abacus has everything we need for our daily functions and makes basic accounting easy. We can access our client's many different ways (i.e.: name, matter, ID). I love the way the top bar is set up. The icons are used daily. I can print out reports for the partner within seconds. Easy transfer of funds from one client to another.

Cons

Sometimes when updates are made, there are problems with the monthly billing and client payments. After inputting the time tickets, sometimes the program freezes up and we need to shut down the system a couple of times and even need to call customer services for help. Also, when printing the invoices, even though I put them in alpha order, when they print out, they print out numerically or even one time recently just printed out (255 bills) in no methodical way. The same thing happens when inputting client payments. Instead of allowing me to input what I want to input, if I mark an invoice or invoices.

We finally have a program that does it all.

The main benefit is what I see in the littlest things. Because the notes attorneys make, emails sent, and forms created are all in one area we are able to better serve our clients. Finding the answer to a question is quick. Being able to provide a more streamlined service to our clients means we have happier clients, happier team members, and a good work flow. It is a win, win, win!

Pros

The best part of this software is that everything is inclusive, the calendar, deadlines, notes, intakes, payment, email, forms, etc. It is all in one place and they all interact with one another. We used to have a different application for each element, now we have Abacus. One program that does it all.

Cons

The software is strong. But there are still upgrades to be made. It would be helpful to have the ability to start typing the matter name in all areas that it comes up rather then just the calendar (i.e. linking emails to Abacus) We also had some issues with the initial set up but our representative helped us through all of those bugs. He was amazing.
