What Grass Is This? - 2026 Pricing, Features, Reviews & Alternatives

What Grass Is This? is a web-based and iOS lawn care platform for residential homeowners across all 50 U.S. states. The platform identifies grass species from a single uploaded photo in approximately 15 seconds, returning a confidence score and ranked alternative matches based on blade width, color, growth habit, and regional turf data. No account creation is required to run an identification. From that result, the platform generates a personalized 12-month care plan calibrated to the user's ZIP code and confirmed grass type, with task timing driven by local soil temperature readings and live weather data rather than a fixed calendar. Tasks cover pre-emergent herbicide application, green-up fertilization, overseeding, dormancy preparation, and weekly weather-aware maintenance.

Beyond identification and scheduling, What Grass Is This? includes a lawn problem diagnosis tool that analyzes lawn photos against five problem classes: fungal and bacterial diseases, insect pests, weeds, nutrient deficiencies, and environmental stress. Diagnosis results are filtered by the user's ZIP code and current season, and each finding includes a confidence score, severity rating, and urgency rating. Treatment recommendations are cross-checked against the user's grass type to avoid suggesting products that could damage the identified turf. The platform carries no product sales agenda, and recommendations are not influenced by affiliate or retail relationships. Additional tools include 10 free lawn calculators covering lawn size, fertilizer quantity, watering schedule, mowing height, soil temperature tracking, aeration timing, herbicide timing, lawn cost estimation, seeding timing, and grass comparison. A Chrome extension makes five of these calculators available offline. The iOS app provides a home screen task dashboard, a weather screen, a year-ahead plan screen, and a lawn journal. Multi-lawn profile management, lawn health tracking over time, a journal, smart seasonal reminders, PDF care plan exports, and cross-device sync round out the feature set. A free tier requires no credit card, and a premium tier is priced below the cost of professional landscaping consultations. A founding-spot program is also available for lawn care professionals.
