DALL-E 2 is an artificial intelligence system introduced in January 2022 by OpenAI that generates realistic and creative images from text descriptions. It builds on OpenAI's previous DALL-E system released in 2021. DALL-E 2 aims to empower graphic designers, advertising agencies, digital artists, content creators, and marketing professionals by assisting with visual creative needs.

The system can create original images and art in a photorealistic style based on natural language text prompts. It combines concepts, attributes, and styles specified in the text to generate novel images. DALL-E 2 goes beyond basic image generation to provide additional functionality through outpainting, inpainting, and creating variations. Outpainting involves expanding the boundaries of an existing image by generating additional new content beyond the original frame. Inpainting allows editing images by filling in gaps or changing parts of the image through text instructions. The variation feature creates different renditions of the same image by applying stylistic changes.

Compared to the original DALL-E system, DALL-E 2 generates images with four times higher resolution. It also scored higher in third-party evaluations for accuracy in matching text captions and photorealism of generated images. The latest system incorporates additional safety practices such as training data filtering, policies, and monitoring systems to prevent misuse.

The public beta release of DALL-E 2 in July 2022 came after months of testing and safety improvements. OpenAI takes a phased rollout approach to understand capabilities, limitations, and real-world usage prior to full launch.
