Librato overview

What is Librato?

Librato provides a cloud-based service for devops, development and operations teams, allowing you to monitor and understand the metrics that impact your business at all levels of the stack. We provide everything you need to visualize, analyze, and actively alert on the metrics that matter to you. With Librato you can bring all of your monitoring data together in a unified hosted environment, helping you to detect signs of problems early, minimize their impact, and quickly find and fix their root cause.

There is nothing to install; you can send us your data in the way that works best for you and in any resolution up to 5 seconds. We support dozens of collection and monitoring agents, language bindings, and command line tools and can handle every kind and any amount of data, because insight often comes from unexpected sources. You’re not limited by a set of predefined metrics, and you're free to change what metrics you track anytime. We store your data redundantly for one year. We scale on demand. We thrive on big data.

We can transform and aggregate data in real time to give you the metrics you need to get the best possible insight. Metrics can be correlated with other metrics and annotated with one-time events (such as deploys) in custom instruments. Instruments can be combined in beautiful dashboards for display on any screen, from an iPad to a wall-mounted display. Instruments and dashboards are updated in real time, so you can quickly spot spikes, shifts, opportunities, or performance issues, and our intelligent alerting allows minimum/maximum thresholds to be set on any metric and seamlessly integrates with 3rd party services such as PagerDuty, OpsGenie, Email, and custom WebHooks.

Chart snapshots make it easy to collaborate with others in your team using existing collaboration environments such as Campfire and HipChat, and shared dashboards make it possible to provide your entire organization with visibility into the data collected.

Since Librato was developed from the ground up as a platform with an “API’s first” approach, you can also embed it in your SaaS or PaaS product to let your customers monitor their use of your services and possibly some of their own metrics.

Great with a lot of Potential

Used occasionally for less than 6 months

It has its potential and the cost can be significantly lower than some competitors.

Pros
Is this a WUG or Solarwinds NPM? No, but it's definitely not something to shake a stick at. As long as you have good technical-know-how, then this can actually be shaped to be as necessary in your environment as one of the big dogs - just being able to wrap your head around it isn't always the greatest or easiest thing to do.

Cons
Not the easiest to use configuration and setup. Not as good as NPM or WUG, but it gets the job done at a lower cost** (**depending on how many "metrics" you choose).

A New way to Measure Cloud Metrics

With its surreal black and green interface, this one’s a winner. For a technical application, such as this, a simple interface can considerably help non-technical people like me. And, I was not disappointed. Each task or action is not more than two clicks away. What’s more, the interface is task-driven. This means each click is rationed to perform a task. I especially liked the fact that the interface gets right down to business with the attributes and alerts tab.

Pros
Excellent service that unlocks the true value of data

Cons
Could be less technical
