Slack is one of the premier collaboration services

2018-12-31

Pros

Slack is very user friendly in terms of layout, and gives Microsoft Teams a run for its money.

Cons

Slack is expensive compared to other collaboration services (Microsoft Teams, Skype, etc.).

best chat and collaboration tool

2018-12-11

i used slack with my previous team kind of outside of the company chat system... the company has gone with microsoft teams. microsoft teams is nowhere near as easy to use or as helpful as slack.

Pros

easy to use for chatting and collaborating with the team and with remote teams. works well on the PC as well as on the phone app. has many great plugins that allow it to work with your systems to tell you if a project deployed successfully or not... and giphy :)

Cons

i can't really think of something i don't like about it... other than that not enough people in my company are using it :(

Gets the job done, but not amazing

2018-11-16

It's a good tool, but it isn't great. Microsoft Teams and Twist have come a long way to rival Slack (especially Microsoft Teams).

Pros

The thing I enjoyed the most about Slack was the ability to integrate a large number of applications and services with it.

Cons

The Desktop Client is kind of slow and clunky compared to alternatives, and there are other paid (and free options) which provide more functionality nowadays.

Very good for small teams

2018-12-03

I've used slack with many projects and it is better and faster then other apps, like microsoft Teams

Pros

This app is easy to use and most importantly is free. It's a great way to communicate with teamates.

Cons

The app can take a lot of Ram space for no reason when running in the background, wich can slow down your computer.

The main competitor to Microsoft Teams

2018-07-24

Pros

This really has all the features you would ever need. And then some. Feature rich is really the best thing about this software.

A Wonderful Collaboration Tool

2018-02-06

Pros

Slack is an excellent tool for departments or divisions within a company. It is very easy to track your calls and messages with your teammates.

Cons

If, like many companies, your company uses Office 365, as good as Slack is, it makes more sense to use Microsoft Teams.

Good chat tool

2018-02-16

brings the company together, shares data and has a point of reference for research on issues that have occurred previously.

Pros

easy to set up and get other staff to use. Nice to add emojis and webhooks to channels. enjoy the phone system and video calls.

Cons

Expensive software for what it performs, don't particularly find it value for money, we are investigating using Microsoft teams as an alternative due to the cost factor.

Great for teams

2018-10-23

Slack is far superior to other similar services such as Skype or Microsoft teams. There are many great integrations and the organization of the UI is very good.

Pros

I am used to using VoIP software, so when I came to start using Slack I was already familiar with how different channels were utilized to categorize the discussions which is very nice. Slack in comparison to other instant messaging is geared more towards teams rather than only 1 on 1 conversions. Lots of SaaS software integrate with Slack as well, so in my industry (software development) there are lots of tools I can use in conjunction with Slack.

Cons

It can be difficult to remember workspace URLs if you do not have the native App on Windows or Mac. I am part of various teams and I have to refer back to old emails to find the slack URL login.

Slack Review

2018-08-02

In a nutshell, so far we love slack and use it over Microsoft Teams which comes included with our Office software.

Pros

Slack is amazing for increasing team productivity. The ease of use makes it simple to create groups that allow for communication and sharing of resources. It has been great for keeping our IT and Marketing teams focused on long term projects. We love it so much we might roll it out to more departments.

Cons

Honestly, it is tough to list things I dislike about this software. I have had some issues with third party "apps," but the sheer number of apps and ease of adding them is a nice feature. My biggest pet peeve so far has to be the message length limit. Which is annoying, but can be bypassed by simply uploading a word of PDF doc, which sometimes turns out to be useful in the future anyway.

Good Productivity Tool for Teams

2018-08-06

Pros

It's very similar to Microsoft Teams, allowing you to set up multiple channels for different projects or teams you work with.

Cons

If you already have Office 365, it's hard for me to recommend this over Microsoft Teams. However, if that's not a factor then this is probably the tool to use.

This is how you do team communication and collaboration

2018-05-09

Pros

A sleek and powerful suite, Slack is the end all be all of collaboration. Microsoft Teams second to it.

Cons

The payment could be a little cheaper and some of the software updates have. I detest it's paying structure. Lots of hit and miss with the third party API, wish they would implement more quality control.

Nice little communication tool, generally good to use

2018-06-15

The integrations were a great help. having that level of interactivity is really helpful. Some competitors (I use that word very loosely) like Facebook Workplace simply do not have the integrations we required but Slack had them all. Working with external companies was also very simple

Pros

Generally easy to use/set up with a friendly interface, designed by people in the industry for people in the industry so is quite intuitive by design. The ability to connect to almost every other application we use was a great advantage for automating processes which took some strain off of the IT dept

Cons

Whilst the product was great the free version was limited in functionality (understandable) and we could not justify the price of the full version over Microsoft Teams which came bundled for free with our Office 365 package.

Slack: a premium worth paying?

2018-12-31

Ultimately, it will depend on the needs of your users. Everyone hates to change and if Slack is already established, you will not be popular forcing people to make a transition. If there is no elephant in the room yet, it's worth considering all your options to deduplicate your services and your spend.

Pros

Slack has more integrations than its competitors, and the gulf is not narrowing. You can simply integrate more of your services into Slack than Teams or HipChat.

Cons

And you may already be paying for Microsoft Teams as a part of your Office 365 cost.

Communications between individuals and team

Pros

Channels feature where i can post and receive news. We use slack in our groovy scripts to send direct messages to channels, which is pretty good feature. This allows to send msgs grom jenkins after a build is done. Direct messages allows easy direct communication.

Cons

If there is a easy way to link with microsoft team, that would be nice.

A huge improvement over outdated messaging apps.

2018-12-14

Slack has been losing serious ground to Microsoft Teams, and a big part of that is Slack's pricing structure.

Pros

Channels are great and work great for managing conversations among multiple departments and projects. The software is very reliable with outages being rare and the service brought back up quickly when they do occur. Slack's app integration seems like a great feature, although our company has not utilized it for the most part.

Cons

Pricing for message history, while not extremely expensive, seems to be prohibitive for smaller companies that simply opt to live without it. Searching message history - one of Slack's biggest strengths is sacrificed when using a free account and even a small team of users.

Great tool for large businesses and computer programmers

2018-08-02

Easily talk to team members remotely

Pros

Very quickly create rooms to chat in for group projects. The ability to share code with ease and collaborate with other members even across the ocean. Great for a small to large business. You can easily remotely do a lot of communication and share documents.

Cons

It has a lot of integrations which is great, but sometimes you need home brew apps to make it easier to use ie. Microsoft Teams and Office 365 suite.

Good for small companies for quick communication

Pros

Also, it is not much heavy tool like microsoft team. And creating small private/public group is very quick in this.

Improve Communication & Collaboration with Slack

2017-11-07

Pros

Slack is a multi-faceted, channel based communication tool that can bring any team together. I've used Slack for graduate classes, interoffice communication, and professional associations. Scheduling, file-sharing, web conferences, internal and external users, and third party integrations are staples of Slack use. The immediacy of the communication fossilizes email communication while the robust search features make inbox folders of Outlook a thing of the past. This tool can centralize communication to topics, projects, roadmaps, or anything you can imagine alongside personal communications and team conversations. I love using this product on desktop, mobile, or tablet uses.

Cons

I will say that competitors are coming up with comparable products that are within organizational structures (e.g. Microsoft Teams is accessible to all Office 365 users), but that still does not usurp Slack's functionality.

The New Craze - Team Communication Tool

2018-12-07

Slack is another mode of communication and when used at a team level can be used in lieu of Texts & any IM platform. Messages can be categorized ( channels). DMs can be used - it can be limited to your org, or shared to many. It can be the primary communication medium for any team, and if you start to use it regularly, it can replace email. that's it's big selling point -- Although Be careful, it can quickly become "One other place to have to look for something" if you're not careful

Pros

There are quite a few chat apps out now - Teams ( free, sort-of), Discord (not just games), Google Chat ( free for some), Skype ( Dead), Line ( garbage)..... Despite some of these being build on the same basic platform ( Elektron), Slack works the best. I have used them all, and Slack is the most reliable, and easiest to use. It works the same on each platform ( Windows, Web and smartphone)

Cons

It does work and is fairly intuitive, but Microsoft Teams did it one better.

Modernizing Workplace Communication and Content Sharing

2018-05-24

However, I would recommend that users of Office 365 also take a serious look at Microsoft Teams, as it serves as a more integrated platform for O365 license users and adoption for Teams was more seamless for my company due to the existing familiarity with Office applications.

Pros

Slack's interactive interface and chatroom-like setup eliminates the linear nature of email communications and provides a more collaborative environment; content sharing is fast and effective and also allows users to comment directly on uploaded documents for more direct conversations; advanced search functions easily help locate prior conversations or uploads effectively; multiple integrations exist for third-party applications, allowing Slack to be quite flexible for differing team needs; Slack communication channels can be public to companies or private, which is ideal for closed groups for executives or specific projects

Cons

Adoption has been difficult for some users who prefer more traditional methods of communication - for some, adding a new platform had become a digital distraction and another place to look for new conversations, requiring a large cultural shift to lead to widespread adoption; Microsoft Teams is very much like Slack and integrates much better with Office applications if your company already has an O365 platform; channels are not ideal for large teams, since conversations can get lengthy and messy

Best collaborative chat app out there

2018-11-07

Slack is an awesome chat app. It allows you to express yourself through gifs or emoticons, fancified text or to share files and other collaborative things. You cannot go wrong with Slack it is the bees knees.

Pros

It beats Microsoft Teams hands down.

Cons

I really don't have any cons per say. The only thing i can think of would be that it can be a little confusing trying to keep up with multiple workspaces in the app. But the fact that it allows you to deal with multiple workspaces in the app is a step better than what teams does.

Good communication software

2018-09-21

Pros

It's intuitive to use thanks to a good, slick interface. The separation into channels and chats is not unusualy, but I always liked that it's on the same site (I'm referring to the desktop client, mobile is a different story of course). Threading within the chats was a bit confusing at first, but overall I'd say the benefits outweigh the issues. Still, it can cause a lot of confusion when the order of threads keeps changing because people respond to them in different order. What I really appreciate about Slack is the possibility to heavily customize the alerts. You can have specific settings for each channel and distinguish mentions and keywords used. This goes for both desktop and mobile versions and allows to make sure that you only get those notifications that you really want.

Cons

That's why I prefer Microsoft Teams, where you have the team category as a nother organizing structure.

Works as well as any messenger but IPO weary

2018-12-24

No real business problems are being solved. As a user of the Google Suite, which has a basic built in chat app, I now have another system to log into and check, so it may actually be creating more of a problem than a solution. If I had to press, the one thing it is good for is quickly chatting via a phone with international personnel (e.g. text message) as WhatsApp has lost trust since its extremely high priced acquisition by Facebook, who will have to begin monetization.

Pros

This is a very good messaging software. You have the ability to use it via a browser or a client download on your computer and/or use it via an app download. The platform is truly agnostic. My firm uses the Google suite and we have had issues with our Apple users in some instances when they have attempted to use G-Chat on an Ipad Pro, most likely because of the restrictions between Google/Apple.

Cons

I am looking at expanding our use of G-Chat or Microsoft Teams as both companies have multiple business lines which are not dependent on "milking" this simple chat app.

Teams is decent, but I prefer Trello and Slack

2018-10-03

We use both Teams and Slack. Any time Slack is available, the team abandons Teams immediately.

Pros

Teams is a decent structured discussion platform for projects. It allows unique spaces to be set up for projects, file attachments and discussion threads. The biggest benefit is moving discussions and documents out of email for better access and threaded discussion.

Cons

We also have challenges with folks getting access into the right Teams areas whereas adding folks to channels in Slack has proven more manageable for the groups I have used these tools with.

Pros

Teams is a sort of Slack, more complete than Slack, and with integrations to other tools, as needed.

We keep attempting to switch over to Teams from Slack but Teams is lacking critical features.

2018-07-10

Nothing yet, we need a migration tool to move.

Pros

Teams being included in O365 is great, the tie in's with other O365 products are great and the recently added whiteboard function is very useful.

Cons

Teams needs a migration utility from Slack. I know this is complex but without some kind of process to migrate content from Slack it makes the move too disruptive and people would have to run the software side by side with Slack for months while they refer to past conversations.

A good Slack alternative

2018-12-18

We are switching from Slack to MTeams because of the integration of the Microsoft Suite.

Pros

MTeams offers a vast array of plugin solutions that I can't really get from other tools. You can really customize MTeams to fit any industry for any team.

Cons

The side bar and notification feature is not as intuitive as I'd like it to be. I wish there was a way to better customize the feed within channels as well.

Watch out Slack, here comes Teams

2018-09-11

Teams has replaced about ten different Slack instances in our organization, and in that regard, it has worked superbly.

Pros

Teams, like Skype for Business, has excellent integration with existing Office applications. The abilities of it to tie into people's schedules in Outlook via the Exchange Server are great.

Cons

Teams just isn't as fun to use as Slack, lacking a lot of the /commands that Slack has, and thus increasing the amount of time it takes to do simple things like changing statuses.

Oh what a mess

2018-11-24

We are testing Teams to replace either Slack and Skype for Business.

Pros

It's very hard to find something positive to say about Teams. It's got all of the features you need in a collaboration software, chat, video, screen sharing and a mobile app. The tricky part is finding them!

Cons

It's visually cluttered. I can't seem to find my way around. I don't know where the list of contacts is, I've been invited in a bunch of channels that are somehow grouped together in a way I don't understand. I will probably get the hang of it eventually, but right now it's taking a lot of time during startup and it just looks like a Christmas tree when I open it up.

Ultimately a Failure Compared with Skype for Business

2018-12-27

Using this software just made me want to try using Slack instead.

Pros

I guess the inclusion of appointments and files was nice.

Cons

They took a functional solution for chat/calls, re-skinned it into a cluttered purple mess and took out some of the most useful features it ever had, like separate windows for separate chats and custom away messages. Instead, they focused their time on emojis and other annoying features we'll never use.

It was clunky to use, slow, and was not as smooth as Slack.

Great tool for companies of all sizes

2018-12-12

Pros

Teams is a great tool for large offices with multiple locations. It is super easy to contact fellow colleagues for a quick business related chat, or not so business related.

Cons

I wish there was a way to be able to use gifs, like in Slack. :)

New to the product and already a rock start

2018-10-24

Made my realize that we use a plenty of collaboration tools that don't collaborate with each other.

Pros

Before Teams my, team, would maintain a OneNote file, communicate via Skype for business, slack, email.

Cons

I have not figured out a way yet to upload executable files to the files section. Would be great to be able to share a tool with my team this way and send notification that is available for use.

Big improvement over Skype for business

2017-12-09

Pros

I like that they are trying to compete with slack. The collaboration and integration features are very cool.

Cons

I find it's a bit of the same with Skype. If you're not signed in you don't get notifications through email as it was designed. At least there is a solid mobile app though.

Great for in-house team communication

2018-11-20

Pros

+ Integrates with Active Directrory for secure user management + Works great on Mac and Windows + Great in corporate environment (integrates with Onedrive for secure document storage)

Cons

If you switch between Teams and Slack, the way chat works requires some getting used to (threads work differently).

Microsoft Teams is slowly becoming a Slack competitor and should be given consideration.

2017-12-06

Pros

As part of this transition we are also migrating from Slack to Microsoft Teams.

Cons

To continue my comparison with Slack one thing that is lacking in Teams is integrations with third party apps.

Teams is a valiant effort to add value to Office 365, but falls slightly short of Slack

2018-02-21

Pros

What it does well is the basic functions of products like Slack, but with a Microsoft flare.

Cons

It's all about the fact that this wants to be Slack, gets very close, but just isn't quite there.

Microsoft has created a competitor for Slack!

2018-07-10

It is included in our E3 licensing, though sometimes clunky it is still an overall intuitive chat utility comparable to slack.

Pros

It is included in our E3 licensing. They are constantly adding features and fixing bugs to the software. Connections to other 3rd party integrations is awesome. Teams are integrated with most Microsoft office365 products.

Cons

There seem to be bugs pretty often. Update process sometimes brings a program to a halt. No popout 1:1 chat window. Sometimes it isn't easy to figure out how to create a connection and utilize that data.

Good, but not the best

2018-12-04

It was great when we used it, but slack is an overall better option which is faster and easier to use.

Pros

I use this tool all the time for communicating with my team, it was fast and great, plus it organised our work amazingly well.

Cons

We have since moved on to slack which is more reliable and faster.

Getting better but still no Slack

2017-12-12

Cheap Team Collaboration if you use Office 365 already

Pros

Collaboration between teams is possible. The integrations with office 365 apps is helpful. The fact that is it included with an office 365 license for free is it's biggest selling point. They are attempting to merge Teams and Skype for Business/Lync now so it's future is still in the works. Video meeting features are nice.

Cons

Not even close to slack in the number of integrations with other products.

Slack from Microsoft

2018-12-05

Pros

The benefit of using this as a competitor to Slack is the tight integration with other office products.

Cons

Team collaboration platforms are becoming the norm but the problem isn't with this, but the fact most companies are inbetween platforms, meaning you have yet another program open to communicate.

Good teamwork tool

2018-09-24

Pros

I've used Slack as well, but we treat Slack as more of a messenger than a data/asset repository.

Cons

Nothing much really. I guess I wish there was a calendar application where users can add events/tasks to a team cal.

A Pale Imitator

2018-04-09

Pros

This has many similar features to Slack and if you cannot use Slack for compliance reasons or cost, this will fill that void.

Cons

Let's be honest with what this is though, a Slack me too clone.

Everything you need to know

Microsoft Teams and Slack are similar collaboration software solutions that offer chat messaging, collaborative workspaces, automatic notifications, and commenting and video calling features.

Microsoft Teams offers chat-based workspaces that support 1-to-1 messaging and group chats, file sharing, and voice and video calls. It comes bundled with a Microsoft Office 365 subscription.

Slack, on the other hand, lets you create conversation channels for different purposes and supports video calling and file sharing. You can also search previous conversations and messages or archive old channels.

To help you make the right purchase decision, the table below compares Microsoft Teams and Slack on different collaboration capabilities. The parameters you should focus on include conferencing, custom interface, integrations, guest access, and multi-language support.

  • Conferencing: Microsoft Teams offers meeting spaces and web conferencing and uses Microsoft Skype Meeting Broadcast to broadcast live to a large audience. Slack supports screen sharing and voice and video conferencing for a comparatively smaller group of participants.
  • Custom interface: Microsoft Teams allows you to customize workspaces and create custom tabs to add functionality, while Slack supports the customization of themes, messages, emojis and Slackbot responses.
  • Integrations: Slack supports a broader range of integrations covering HR, accounting, marketing, analytics and other apps. Microsoft Teams works seamlessly with Office 365 apps, in addition to integrating with third-party apps.
  • Guest access: Paid Slack accounts let you add multi-channel and single-channel guests and set expiration dates for guest access. Microsoft Teams also allows guests to participate in private chats and channel conversations.
  • Multi-language support: Microsoft Teams supports more languages than Slack.
