Development and Outreach Officer

Beyond grant discovery, it has transformed the way our team manages grants by keeping projects, tasks, and deadlines organized in one place.

Development Operations and Grants Manager

It has saved me so much time being able to fine tune my applications as well as save me from pursuing potential funders who did not align with my organization's mission and goals.

Grants and Development Manager

I like how in-depth I'm able to research a funder before I even attempt an outreach, allowing me to best utilize my time and resources to ensure that I am making the most of all grant/stewardship opportunities. Because of Instrumentl, I've been able to impress donors with an in-depth knowledge of their funding priorities, history of giving, and preferred geographic range.

I also enjoy the "Funder Matches" section because it helps spot many local opportunities that may not seem obvious at first glance. While many funders have direct websites, grant portals, and deadlines - Funder Matches helps to locate family foundations that often require more personal engagement.

Grant Manager

The the layout of the custom home dashboard is especially useful because it can be filtered to show the opportunities by deadline, allowing for grant mapping for the calendar year.

From quickly projecting exactly where a potential cash flow problem comes from to easily visualizing project deadline bottlenecks, Instrumentl transforms what used to take hours and days of painstaking effort - patching data from across multiple platforms - into simple, easily repeatable tasks that help plan and understand your work in a more comprehensive and meaningful way.

Executive Director

Instrumentl is one stop shopping for everything we need for researching, cultivating and submitting proposals to foundations--990s, information on grants/year, openness to new grantees, annual grant levels, and more.

They also invest heavily in training through webinars, educational resources, and best-practice guidance that have helped me grow as a grant writer, not just as a user of their software.

Instrumentl is designed to make every stage of an organization’s grant program easier—from researching funding opportunities to drafting proposals to managing an award. Yet what makes the Instrumentl platform genuinely transformative is that it goes far beyond facilitating an individual grant project.

Director, Grant Management

I have reduced my grant research time by more than 50%, which is particularly impactful given that I am solely responsible for writing and managing all grants within my organization.

Dual Director, Advocacy and Grants Management

We have had suggestions and questions from the start and they've listened, followed-up and followed through. As the only person in our 250+ staff organization who's roles specifically includes grants management, a system like this is vital to success.

Grant Strategist

I found opportunities that I had never seen before and many of the traditional opportunities with updates and time sensitive information that is difficult to track.

Adding in our organizational data was easy, training staff to use the system quick, and understanding and utilizing the features daily a no-brainer.

Senior Grant Writer

By pairing Instrumentl’s filtered, funder-aligned search tools with ChatGPT's drafting capabilities, I’ve been able to accelerate narrative development, synthesize funder priorities, and customize applications with greater precision.

I did not have to independently search each grant on my calendar as the updates were emailed to me.

Grant Fiscal Manager

Even if you are not familiar with the website and its content, they offer tons of tutorial videos to walk you through each tab, step by step.

With the 990 analysis they provided, I learned that a funder we thought only would support one of our education programs often funded operating support.

Director of Development Operations

It is the first software I've used that has integrated so well with Raiser's Edge which is awesome, because now i'm not having to manage my portfolio in two separate systems.

I also found the more traditional private, foundation and public grant opportunities but with time sensitive updates which are difficult to tract.

Their webinars are valuable for both the timely, relevant information shared by knowledgeable presenters and the information shared by participants.

Grants Manager

I am continuing to learn certain features, so any issues are more a factor of setting aside time to explore and learn than functionality or capability.

It also allows us to upload communications and grant proposals and LOI, so everything is on one place.

I especially love the ability to add collaborators, assign tasks, and avoid manually tracking emails and reminders.

Grants Compliance Manager

The ease with which I can conduct prospect research, track opportunities through moves management, and pull reports to keep my boss in the know.

Development Director

There is such a wealth of information in Instrumentl, it can be difficult to filter out opportunities that aren't a perfect match for mission, goals, or proximity.

President

Not every opportunity is a perfect fit right out of the gate, so you may need to filter, refine, and do a quick reality-check before investing time.

Owner, Grant Writer

The convenience of uploading my award letters and having them scoured by the AI feature was AMAZING!

Overall, Instrumentl has significantly improved my workflow and helped me become a more organized and effective grant writer.

I did not like the fact that I had to download an expense template, add my information to the sheet and then upload it.

Director of Volunteer and Program Operations

It is also nice that multiple people can contribute to different grant processes and anyone with an account can check the system for details and updates so the process isn't siloed.

Excellent ROI - In our first year of utilizing, we uncovered a number of foundations that prior to Instrumentl went unnoticed.

With the latest features of individual expense reporting and document summary scanner, I am super excited for this grant cycle.

Assistant Professor

Our institution needed help finding available grant funding, primarily for smaller grants than those traditionally available through the National Institute of Health.

Additionally, I can get help on anything. If I can’t find it in the written explanations, there’s a video to watch or I can get quick assistance in a chat.

Director of Grant Strategy

They also have loads of free trainings and articles about various grant topics.

It took a bit of time to become fully knowledgeable about utilizing the core functionality of Instrumentl.

There’s also a slight learning curve up front to get your settings dialed in, but that is with any grant search system.

No "cons" except that Instrumentl does not yet integrate with our CRM, NEON. When that occurs, we will give it six stars!

I wish I could search more easily among type of grantee.

It streamlines the work I have to do in researching, tracking, and cultivating relationships with foundations and grant makers.

Program Director

Value for cost of annual subscription - pays for itself many times over

The foundation listings reflect open and active opportunities, which saves time and increases efficiency.

I no longer have to depend on the system my business office uses to manage and track our spending.

Director of Special Projects and Grants

it has been great there was no pressure to sign on which was really amazing and they let you use the software for 14 days for free! and even if you don't use the software you can still attend the trainings!

Fund Development Manager

I Love that they send updates of new possibility or matches are available for me to look at.

Grant Coordinator

Reminders: I like receiving email reminders of upcoming deadlines so that I don't miss any important dates or tasks.

Instrumentl has helped my grant writing tremendously at my organization.

Prospect Research Strategist

The only thing that bothers me is that if I find a grant and save to a project, and the officer decides not to apply, there's no way to just remove the grant.

I also very much appreciate the custom fields ability - it allows our organization to better track success.

Reviewers appreciate that Instrumentl offers diverse plan options and robust functionality, which they feel justifies its higher price compared to other platforms. Some users say the tool pays for itself through improved efficiency and better client service, and they find it reasonably priced given its features. However, some reviewers find the cost to be a significant drawback, especially for small nonprofits and businesses, indicating that the price can be prohibitive. Users think more flexible payment plans and lower pricing would improve its value for money, as affordability remains a concern for many.
