Pros

The best features of Slack are its innovative interface and easy to use features. Slack makes it simple, and even kind of fun, to communicate with your coworkers quickly.

AR

Anonymous Reviewer

I like the different slack channels for various departments, tech-support, team, individual messaging, and celebrating my teams successes or helping each other out with account challenges.

SA

Sarah A.

Slack has been a winner for me no matter which role I am filling. Teams adopt it quickly it's easy to use, easy to set up, and has abundant opportunities for integrations.

EJ

Elyse J.

Pros

What I like the most about this collaboration software is the simple and logical UI, which is not overloaded with lots of unnecessary features. It has all we need for successful communication.

AR

Anonymous Reviewer

Cross-platform applications ready to use. Amazing open source community built around the product, friendly and helpful people.

VC

Viorel-Cosmin M.

The software is easy to use, similar to the commercial app Slack. It provides good thread tracking and the interface is clean and easy to understand.

Cons

While they are only visible to me, I am always worried that I accidentally posted something wrong.

AR

Anonymous Reviewer

I disliked the inability to make a public group "private" after it's creation. Would occasionally lag and my.

AR

Anonymous Reviewer

I hate hate hate how often I struggle with using the video share and audio when someone calls me on slack. It almost never works for me.

DR

Dianne R.

Cons

The incoming hook limitation of maximum content length is the hell (Mattermost don't inform the customer about a message which was higher above the hard coded message size limit).

TF

Tobias F.

For its purpose, I have found nothing about the software that I can find to complain about.

A bad user interface, a lot of bugs, sometime you need to restart it in order to make sure that everything works as expected.

Slack - Review

Reviewed 3 years ago

I simply tested Slack to get an overall idea. I ended up opting for a Mattermost installation.

Pros

The ease of use of Slack is quite surprising. Child's play !

Cons

I think the price is quite high if you compare Slack to other similar systems like Mattermost that are free and make their sources available for installation on a server.

Best team communication app

Reviewed 3 years ago

* Team communication is easy. * Handling broadcast alerts and status updates is really easy on Slack.

Pros

* Almost all features exists required for team communication. * Really nice notification settings to setup when to receive and on what device to receive. * Multi device/native apps support is really good. * Ability to add alert bots and integrations is really cool.

Cons

* Using reply from notification on mobile apps does not work 90% of time. * Price is a bit on high end, compared to mattermost.

Slack

Decent but nothing great

Reviewed 2 years ago

It's not been bad, but nothing even close to the hype. Mattermost will get you almost all the features and may even be better in some areas.

Pros

I think slack is a decent chat app. It has mostly been stable and available. I like the customizability of it.

Cons

It lacks finish. For example, it's text box has spotty support for markdown. Also, I wish it had some convenience features for threads etc.

Slack

Best collaboration tool

Reviewed 3 years ago

Collaboration made easy. Different teams, channels, topics. Easy management and use and applications for mobile devices.

Pros

Altough concept is simple, it just works. It is better way of collaboration than email. Leave email things to email and for collaboration use Slack.

Cons

It is relatively simple software. There are limitations on free version but are quite high enough. There is opensource version Mattermost so question is which one to chose.

Slack

Great for internal Messaging

Reviewed a year ago

Great internal messenger, just lacking in some fun features I appreciated with tools like Mattermost. The UI is great and has a night mode which many folks appreciate, but I'd love to see more custom options for emojis and gifs. Super easy to add channels, team members, and delete old channels.

Pros

Easy to use right off the bat, easy to add channels, clean interface. I appreciate notifications before sending @channel messages, especially if users are across time zones

Cons

lacking certain features I've enjoyed on other work messengers such as actual built in gifs (they have a feature but it sends randomized gifs), and you can't add custom emojis. These features are of course not essential for the office, but when I did use software that included this our office culture had improved.

Mattermost

Almost really good.

Reviewed 5 years ago

Slack with AD integration at half the cost. But I still wish I could afford Slack.

Pros

Slack integrations just work on Mattermost. The theme choices are very nice. The ability to host my own on-premises server is very nice. Technical support staff is very knowledgeable and competent. I'm not made to feel like an idiot if there is some specialized knowledge that I don't have.

Cons

The Android client is extremely buggy and fairly slow still. Selecting a push notice to open Mattermost to view and respond in the thread does not always open the right thread and is always slow (even on LAN, with the latest gen of Android phone!)). The client MUST be snappy and it just.. isn't. The Windows client becomes slower and slower the longer you have it open, so it must be restarted every day or two. It's a little buggy; sometimes new messages make your view scroll up instead of down. But it works well enough most of the time.

Nice free solution for small teams with basic features

Great experiences

Pros

Very similar to Slack or Rocket.Chat Easy to use Open-source! Cheaper than Slack Very readable docs Docker friendly

Cons

AD/SAML/LDAP integration are not for free, unlike for Rocket.Chat I can not find many reasons why to pay, when free variants with more features are available - eg. Rocket.Chat or Zulip.

Cons

Features, feature set is not as complete as in Slack. The timeline and roadmap is not very clear to me.

Best overall when considering options and security

Reviewed 2 years ago

I like the ability to build very specific groups and control notifications in each group. Was a previous Slack user but Slack doesn't fit with our security requirements and the cost. The more MM can bring their feature stack closer the Slack, the better, IMHO

Pros

Our IT department shortlisted it is one of the few collaboration messaging apps that pass our minimum security requirements. One key feature to mark a post as unread is really great for me.

Cons

Not as feature rich as Slack but hopefully feature development progresses. Needs to handle nested replies better.

Mattermost

Very intuitive and solid software which is perfect for running a slack replacement on premise.

Reviewed 5 years ago

A super and ready to use Slack alternative.

Pros

* The replacement of slack * Mattermost has almost the same features as Slack * You can host and run your own instance on your own server (For companies which hate clouds) :) * You have a good overview of logs and you can see what goes around * The statistics gives a good point when a dev team is productive * You can easily create unlimited integrations which some internal stuff

Cons

* The lack of integrations (Slack is here over the top) * The incoming hook limitation of maximum content length is the hell (Mattermost don't inform the customer about a message which was higher above the hard coded message size limit) * UX in Slack is a little bit better (Slack is massively using websockets and eventstreams to fetch the actual team messages) -> You see always whats going on * A 'Unread' channel (like in slack) would be a pleasure ;) * A step by step guide for creating an integration would not bad for not advanced users

Pros

I like how easy is to use and allows different "rooms" for collaboration for teams. It is a great tool for fast daily communication.

Pros

I really like the fact that it's open source and people from the community have the option to contribute things that they would like to see in Mattermost.

Cons

Slack has a bot that shows you how to use slack, and sometimes gives you tips on what you can do. It also allows you test out different messaging features. Mattermost doesn't have a bot like this.

It's free and integrates with gitlab. It has the same features as slack and doesn't have many of the limitations
