Artifactory overview

What is Artifactory?

JFrog Artifactory is a cloud-based repository management solution, which assists software development teams with repository management and process automation. Key features include software distribution, secure data storage, access control, multi-site replication, and automated server backup.

The Artifactory platform enables administrators to gain insight into the code-to-cluster process and manage application packages, operating system component dependencies, open-source libraries, docker containers, Helm charts, and more. It allows managers to integrate continuous delivery tools including Pupper, Ansible, Chef, and Saltstack, to streamline application delivery. Plus, teams can use the solution to unite the CI/CD ecosystem and capture critical information about the build process.

Artifactory comes a REST API, which allows DevOps teams to automate releases and minimize downtime. It provides users access to metadata related to environment images and application files across containers such as Docker, Kubernetes, DC/OS, and more. It also offers integration with version control systems including Git, TFS, and Bitbucket.

Key benefits of using Artifactory

- Dependency management: securely manage an explosion of dependencies that characterizes modern software development.

- Efficient builds: use software components that are locally cached and easily accessible.

- Release stability: minimize errors and re-work

- Artifact traceability: use metadata to validate software components

- Large scale distribution: replicate and distribute software to any number of edge nodes, deployment platforms and IoT devices.

Cons
“One can simply get lost in tons of options and strugle to find the right menus. This increases the learning curve for the application which is frustrating at times.”

“Reporting and Analytics is a weak point. Also vulnerabilities scanning is not available by default and you need to purchase XRAY which is a separate product.”
