Google App Engine overview

What is Google App Engine?

Google App Engine is a fully managed serverless platform for building and deploying scalable web and mobile back ends without direct management of underlying infrastructure. It abstracts server provisioning and configuration tasks while providing built-in load balancing and automatic scaling that adapts to changing traffic demands. The platform serves software development teams and enterprises that require reliable application hosting with global distribution capabilities and minimal operational overhead.

The platform offers two distinct runtime environments to address diverse workload requirements. The Standard Environment supports sandbox execution and optimized scaling for applications with predictable traffic patterns and includes preconfigured runtimes for Python, Java, Node.js, PHP, Ruby, Go, and C# languages. The Flexible Environment enables custom runtime configuration within Docker containers on a Kubernetes based infrastructure to accommodate applications with specialized dependencies. Both environments provide application versioning, traffic splitting, and seamless integration with monitoring and logging tools for detailed performance insights and health diagnostics. Security is enforced through built-in firewall controls, managed TLS certificates for custom domains, and identity and access management for precise permission control.

App Engine integrates with Google Cloud services to extend functionality through object storage, relational and NoSQL databases, messaging systems, analytics platforms, and artificial intelligence APIs. Deployment workflows can leverage command line tools, source control systems, and continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines to automate build and release processes. The platform exposes open standards via RESTful application programming interfaces for interoperability with external tooling. Developers can use the Cloud SDK for local development and testing and the Cloud Code extension for integrated development environment support. Applications benefit from global distribution and redundant infrastructure to maintain availability and minimize latency for end users across multiple regions.

“For instance, with Spring, you add @Cacheable annotations to method which will automatically use in-memory cache + propagate to memcache through ehcache (yes, one line settings) - on GAE you will need to write it yourself.”
