ER/Studio Data Architect overview

What is ER/Studio Data Architect?

ER/Studio is an enterprise data modeling and data architecture platform built to help organizations design, standardize, and evolve complex data environments at scale. It enables teams to create conceptual, logical, and physical data models, align business meaning with technical implementation, and maintain architectural clarity across cloud, hybrid, and on-prem systems.

For more than 30 years, ER/Studio has helped data architects define the structural foundation of enterprise data. It is not primarily a data governance tool. Its core strength is precise modeling, semantic consistency, collaboration, and controlled change management, while supporting governance initiatives through traceability, standards enforcement, and metadata visibility.

ER/Studio supports full lifecycle modeling. Teams can design conceptual models to define business entities, logical models independent of platform, and physical models optimized for technologies such as SQL Server, Azure Synapse, and Snowflake. Advanced forward and reverse engineering transform live databases into editable models and generate platform-ready DDL. External Views support enables accurate documentation of layered warehouse architectures without duplicating structures.

ER/Studio supports all modern platforms, including data warehouses, lakehouses and data vaults.

ER/Studio provides a semantic backbone that bridges business and IT. Business terms can be linked directly to model objects to ensure shared definitions across systems. With Team Server Core in the Enterprise edition, business and technical users can access models through a web portal, explore diagrams, and collaborate with context.

ERbert, the AI Data Modeling Assistant, enhances productivity by guiding modeling tasks, answering design questions, and helping maintain standards directly within the modeling environment.

Collaboration is powered by the centralized Repository, available in Professional and Enterprise editions. It provides version history, check-in and check-out, role-based access, and universal mapping for traceability across models. Compare and merge functionality helps manage change across development, test, and production environments. Integration with Git, Jira, and DevOps workflows supports structured release management.

MetaWizard bridges enable metadata import and export across more than 70 platforms, including databases, BI tools, and ETL systems. ER/Studio also integrates with enterprise ecosystems such as Microsoft Purview and Collibra, allowing modeled structures and definitions to align with broader governance and catalog initiatives.

ER/Studio is available in three editions. Standard includes Data Architect with logical and physical modeling, advanced engineering, and a local Data Dictionary for standards and reuse. Professional adds the centralized Repository, version control, universal mapping, and an Enterprise Data Dictionary for team collaboration. Enterprise includes Data Architect, Repository, and Team Server Core, delivering web-based collaboration, cross-platform metadata integration, and integration with Purview and Collibra.

Additional capabilities include JSON data modeling, naming standards enforcement, automation through macros, advanced search, lineage exchange, and secure authentication including Okta SSO. ER/Studio serves as the structural foundation for enterprise data architecture, connecting business meaning with technical execution while enabling teams to design with precision and confidence.
