Best and easiest to use payment processor

2018-12-26

Pros

When I built my first ecommerce site, I integrated stripe, which was very easy to do with their instructions and plugins. Accepting payments on my site was easy. I like that Stripe has reporting functionality as well as a simple interface and payout process, which you can customize if you prefer depending on your needs. There are many merchant services options to choose from but if you need online credit card processing, Stripe is great, free (only pay for transaction costs), and easy to use.

Cons

Stripe does not accept PayPal payments so you would have to have separate PayPal integration on your site.

Stripe, the PayPal alternative!!

2018-08-10

Definitely a GREAT payment gateway alternative for PayPal!

Pros

Comparably priced with all other payment gateways. DOESN'T require or trick people into signing up with an account! Woocommerce plugin is very useful and easy to setup

Cons

Not really any thing bad to say about Stripe. I wish there was but for now, after 5 years of use, nothing bad to say.

Quickly becoming my favorite way to process payments

2018-01-09

Its a great alternative to using PayPal and helped me to create payment gateways on platforms that i cant use paypal on.

Pros

There was a bit of a learning curve but I love that I can create subscription payments for clients and its included in the services provided. The dashboard is clear and easy to read and understand and it integrates with a lot of other services that I use. I like to pricing structure offered.

Cons

Its not as easy to integrate some things as I would like. I am not the most tech savvy person, but have gotten help when needed to set things up that I didnt understand. Having an easier way to create payment buttons would be awesome. Otherwise there isnt really anything I dislike about stripe.

It’s okay.

2019-04-17

It’s okay, I still use it but I prefer PayPal

Pros

I like how easy it is to work with when customers are placing orders

Cons

I do not like that any customer can file a dispute to get their money back when there’s proof they actually did receive their package. So they’re robbing me and there is nothing I can do.

Payments have never been easier

2019-04-23

Stripe is allowing customers to purchase products directly from our website- decreasing the need for cold-calls and expensive advertising.

Takes seconds to get approved. We never even had to contact support which is the best prove of the platform quality

Great alternative to Paypal

2019-03-21

I wanted to see what else was out there beside PayPal and some of my clients don't want to business wit PayPal anymore.

Pros

Customer services is by far the shining star of this company! I needed help with their invoicing system since my site was under construction and I couldn't authenticate. I was worried that I would have to wait until my site was up and running again before I could use them. I called their customer service and did the call me when I'm next but, I had connection problems with my cell phone, I was walking the friendliest 80 lbs. dog ever and every airplane wanted to pass over me. The same rep called me back 4 times to make sure it was the best time for me to talk. Also their call center is in Northern California which cuts down on the language barrier with scripted prompts. Which was a pleasant surprise especially since you don't want to have communication issues when talking about your income. I was able to get my question answered and that one experience will have me be a customer for a long time. In short Pros: Great customer service multitude of products they hire stateside the reps were very knowledgeable and didn't pass the buck

Cons

As someone who has been in the banking industry for 15 years in various operational, corporate and consumer levels, I found their website and product explanations extremely confusing. I had no idea which product I should choose nor any real guiding process when you sign up. They should really segment their site so that freelancers and small business owners are looking a the products that large agencies or enterprise companies would need. I had to call in to find out answers to my simple questions that should be bright as day on the site. Cons: The number products Poor site user-ability Products not explained well or properly online (this is coming from a finance industry person)

Unreasonable fees for Refunded Charges, Unrealistic Hold Times on Payments, Including Low Risk Payments

2018-07-18

I subsequently closed my account and continue to use Square and PayPal, which have no similar ridiculous policies.

Pros

This integrates with almost anything, Zapier, IFTTT, Integromat, Invoicing Software, etc; which makes it very convenient. Features are good if you are a developer.

Cons

Upon creating an account, I experienced a long wait period for my account to be approved (about 2 weeks) mostly due to an oversight by the team to activate my account. Then, I was put on a 'high risk' status even though my profession and sales were in the LOW risk category. I also provided all of the required identification and documents to be a 'low risk' status user, however after a few more days they realized this and I was deemed low risk. That was not all, I was required to have ALL payments, regardless of method and amount, go through an extended hold time until I made consistent sales, which I believe was a 4-6 month period. The funds were held for about 7 days, which was not possible for my business. I emailed, chatted and spoken with many employees to try to bypass but to no avail. When I realized that it would be held for 7 days, I refunded a customer in order to pay an alternative method, however, I learned after doing so that the 'processing fees' couldn't be refunded and I was charged the full fees to process.

Not Paypal

2018-01-18

We sell at craft fairs and expos as well as invoicing for freelance work and it is always good to have more gateways for clients - some people don't trust Paypal or Amazon etc so offering choices is offering peace of mind.

Pros

The Stripe gateway, while not as pervasive as PayPal has established itself and has a lot of integration going on, almost anyplace you can plug in Paypal you can use Stripe.

Cons

I haven't seen a stand alone product for stripe the way Paypal has built their payment iOS app and more integration would always be better.

The Best Payment API*

2018-08-20

It's been a dream on my service. The admin panel, the documentation, the library, it's all been fantastic.

Pros

Stripe is extremely easy to use for payments on a website. They also have a great featureset like managing subscriptions and some shared customer data across sites (like if someone has used the stripe widget elsewhere they may not need to re-enter their information so they love it.

Cons

The Best Payment API* The asterisk belongs here because I would say if you NEED Paypal support then it may be better to go with an almost-but-not-quite-as-good-competitor (which happens to include Paypal right out of the box).

We changed over to Stripe after experiencing fraud on one of our Paypal accounts (someone ran through a bunch of $1 charges to test credit cards) and having an awful customer service experience with Paypal.

The fees are about the same as other merchants such as Square, QBO Merchant Services, Stripe and others.

Pros

PayPal is widely accepted, integrates with most online ecommerce, and allows customers to pay with or without an account. The monthly statements are great for reconciling the PayPal account.

Pros

I'd suggest going with Stripe or ANY other service then PayPal.

Does the job, but in no situation is it the best option

2019-04-21

Pros

Easy enough to receive money through paypal in the occasional situation where it's the preferred method of payment. I prefer venmo in all situations, as I don't have to remember to withdraw after the payment clears; it's just recycled during my next payment. This benefit isn't realized with Paypal since I rarely use it for payments.

Cons

They don't have the same white-labeled flexibility as Stripe, which is hugely important in a payments service.

Easy to move over.

2019-04-28

Moving over from Stripe was a relatively smooth process for us, only problem is that we can't use IPN (Instant Payment Notifications) on multiple domains, which is a bit of a shame.

Pros

PayPal's variety of features for businesses are great - it's easy to integrate it with your website and the API functionality is great. Sending and receiving payments is a breeze.

Cons

What I find is in deal disputes, PayPal always favours the buyer. On my personal account, I've been chargebacked multiple times when dealing via F&F. It's not ideal, but would be good if customer support could put a little more effort into finding the truth behind some of these cases.

Do You Really Have Another Option?

2019-05-31

The good news? PayPal is everywhere. The bad news? PayPal is everywhere. If you operate an online business you can run it without PayPal. Is that your best option? No. PayPal has been around so long and is so widely associated with online payment that there are people who only use PayPal. If you don't offer it you will lose customers. Unfortunately that means that you have to deal with the beast that is PayPal. Whether you feel a situation was handled correctly or not, they are PayPal. They do not side with the seller the majority of the time even if the seller did nothing wrong. They also have some very shady practices with regards to how transactions are handled and reported to users. I have actually experience a situation where I sold something on eBay which I also have connected to my PayPal business account. The item was damaged in shipping. Per eBay policy since the buyer paid through PayPal, the funds were "put on hold" as soon as the buyer reported damage. I only found out days later that PayPal had withdrawn money from my associated bank account when I saw the withdraw on my bank statement, NOT in my PayPal account. The ONLY place the withdraw was documented in PayPal was with a completely unassociated purchase I had made on another online website. When I made the purchase, they tagged on a small message at the bottom of my online PayPal transaction showing they were ALSO withdrawing the money for my eBay refund. There was no individual transaction showing the refund

Pros

PayPal is widely used and widely accepted on line. If you don't have it you are going to lose customers.

Cons

There accounting operations are not as clearly laid out as other payment gateway services like Square or Stripe.

I have used Paypal extensively but am considering a switch

2018-07-02

Pros

We have used Paypal extensively for over a decade. For peer to peer payments it is very easy to use but for complicated integrations and as your business grows it can become a burden.

Cons

For that reason we are considering a move to Stripe.

Another payment processor

Paypal is decent payment software and gets the job done but I've looked elsewhere for other solutions too.

Pros

Paypal is a decent payment platform which lets you accept both paypal payments and credit card payments easily. I think the best thing about Paypal is the ease of integration so you can get started and accept payments for your services

Cons

The fees are somewhat steep for what they provide and the interface, while has gone through changes, really isn't that innovative compared to Stripes. There also isn't much fraud prevention built in that can be integrated.

Works well with website integration, with one minor drawback

2019-05-03

It's overall a good platform and one that I would recommend. But if your customers are more impulse-based and you're worried about a dropoff at checkout, other platforms are likely better to allow them to enter their credit card, place the order, and move on with their day.

Pros

It's so easy to plug into a site! I'm a graphic and web designer; and when it comes to web design, I work exclusively in WordPress. Integrating PayPal checkout into a website is SO quick and easy, and great for sites where the client wants to be up and running, like, yesterday.

Cons

The major drawback for me was that it wasn't as streamlined and user-friendly as platforms like Stripe. This is great for places like nonprofits and community groups that want to accept credit cards quickly and want to use their PayPal account.

I am not a fan of PayPal Here, but I understand it's market

2019-05-28

Like Square and Stripe, they offer simple and easy setup and integration.

Pros

It's simple, the software is quick to setup, and the hardware they offer is well priced.

Cons

The 10% reserve that PayPal Here requires in case of chargebacks is insane. They don't tell you about this upfront either.

Use paypal regularly; so easy and better security & customer support now

2019-03-06

Paypal is my main source of payments for online shopping. Now they need to convince amazon to accept paypal payments !!!

Pros

Paypal finally got it together after years of painful customer support and security issues. They make it so easy to integrate and use, I use it almost exclusively for online purchases and money-sharing now. If a site doesn't accept paypal as a payment type, I hesitate and often abandon the sale.

Cons

Just allow for some more branding/ customization b/c there is still a stigma of paypal being for "amateur" web developers who have no idea how to implement a custom solution a la stripe.

Great, but I use it sparingly

2019-04-26

Good enough for basic needs, I just don't trust it to handle more than a few hundred dollars.

Pros

I've owned a business account for years with Paypal. As I live in another country where the currency is a significantly lower dollar value compared to USD, I love the fact that I can receive USD payments and keep it in Paypal as Paypal funds to pay for other USD transactions without losing out in the exchange rate. I love Paypal.me, which I use often for quick transactions.

Cons

This is why I've been using Stripe instead for a number of years now.

PayPal is the standard... still recommend after 10 years of using.

2018-12-05

Overall, great experience with PayPal and that is based on 10+ years of use. A couple years ago and then again last year they made some changes to the Admin pages that took some getting used to... but they were good improvements overall and worth taking a little time to learn some new methods of getting things done. Like most things... it depends on what you need the payment processor to do. If you need to setup up to 10 products and sell them online the PayPal buttons are awesome and something other payment processors don't offer.

Pros

A big advantage of PayPal over others (such as Stripe, Authorize.net, and so forth) is that PayPal provides for creating individual buttons for products sales that have optional fields.

Cons

No cons really when used for the right purpose. I always recommend PayPal when a website needs to sell up to 10 products and doesn't have any kind of shopping cart. Also, anytime there are months with no sales and/or sales of less than 20k per year. Then, as long as the PayPal Payments Standard is used, it makes it easy and financially the right choice.

A constant stream of issues

Pros

Simple to set up, the paypal.me function is handy, and the variety of cards we can accept is helpful.

Cons

Things that I can do in Stripe with one click are overly complicated in Paypal.

Not a Fan, would not recommend.

Would not recommend.

Pros

It's really hard for me to come up with much that is good about PayPal. For what we use it for, it's been pretty terrible.

Cons

For years, we used PayPal as a small non-profit organization to receive our donations until we switched to Stripe, which has been So much better.
