Pros and cons

We now use it for all sorts of things that aren't dashboards. The ability to send alerts if queries return results is great for validation of certain processes.
If you can use SQL you can use Metabase to amazing results and give your company great BI.
Great user experience, great user management, easy to use and everybody learns quickly how to find the information they need.
It is quite slow, always not just sometimes; also it is very unpleasant for the eye and the layout is very confusing during the first dates.
Our company makes dashboards on metabase and I continuously observe how the graphs crash every now and then. At some point it just fails to load.
This can be so frustrating, because I occasionally need some data urgently and this really impacts my productivity.

Intuitive Tool For Data Visualisation

Reviewed 3 months ago

I've been enjoying using Metabase ever since my company set it up for data analytics. I always choose it over tools like Amplitude (although Amplitude also has its advantages).

Pros

Metabase is highly intuitive and easy to use. You don't need to have an extensive knowledge of SQL; it's enough to know the structure of the data sources (an analytics database in our case). There are many ways to manipulate and organise data. Most graphs can be set up within a minute by using "questions". I find that the dashboards are very simple and intuitive as well, and it's easy to arrange data in the way you need.

Cons

Perhaps the only thing I'm missing in Metabase are sequences / funnels, but I don't use them for the majority of my work.

Metabase is terrible

I hate it and would not recommend it. Bad.

Pros

Easy to ask simple questions using their 'visual' SQL editor

Cons

Absolutely terrible for everything else, ESPECIALLY dashboard creation.

Does the trick

Reviewed a year ago

The overall experience is very good. As mentioned, we've used on-prem, but we switched to Cloud at some point. The migration was not complicated to be done by someone in our tech team, and all our questions were answered quickly. Cloud is not free, but the pricing is very good and it suits our needs.

Pros

I've initially used Metabase on-prem, which is actually free. With this setup, I liked the most the fact that the reports were showing live data. Also, it is very easy to use, even by junior data analysts. The interface is simple and not overly complicated.

Cons

The least I liked was that the sharing could have been done through public links which I consider dangerous because you have no control over who can access that data, as long as they have the link. Also, the option to build a dashboard, I've avoided it as much as possible, as I found it too complicated and with way too few options. Basically, I felt like it was taking me too much time to build a very simple dashboard.

Great user experience, great user management, easy to use and everybody learns quickly how to find the information they need

Pros

It is easy to use and it is cheapYou can make every analysis you need to understand how your business or product is going and get the insights to what to do next

Cons

I believe for more complex analysis you will need a more robust system like TableauSometimes can be slow to load a lot of data but you can work on that in the infrastructure side

Great data visualization software.

Reviewed a year ago

Overall, we have had a great experience using Metabase and it has really helped our teams to be functional.

Pros

What we loved most about Metabase is how easy it is for non-technical persons to query database and create dashboards. Our main goal of using Metabase was to equip everyone in our team with the ability to get insight into the data they need and Metabase proved to be very useful. We also loved how easy it is to create and edit dashboards, visualize data using different types of charts/graphs and manage collections of dashboards.Another great feature is how you can data from a variety of data sources including Google Analytics!

Cons

If self-hosting, it can be a real pain to set up. The self-hosting guide, while very detailed may not be ideal for everyone. We also had some challenges when connecting our data source as the documentation was not very clear.

Basic but Good Reporting and Analytical Tool

Reviewed a year ago

Metabase's easy to use point-and-click interface has allowed our org to really empower users of all abilities to be able to dig in to data on their own, without necessarily having to have a background in the technical side of report-building.

Pros

Metabase has allowed our org to quickly and easily centralize all of our data in one place. The flexibility of being able to use either SQL or the easy to use point and click interface has empowered users of all abilities across our org. Metabase can be a great tool to serve up basic data reporting and visuals, so long as the data and results are basic.

Cons

Metabase's data visualization features are a step or two below the top competitors on the market. In addition, using more complex datasets and functions will slow down and cut into the reliability of the tool.

Metabase Review

We are using it for database analytics and report generation.

Pros

This database analytic software is fairly easy to setup and very easy to create reports and input custom SQL queries. You can easily view the SQL that any given report is running.

Cons

So far I have not found anything I dislike about this software. The DevOps employee had a little bit of difficulty with the initial setup, but after that it was smooth sailing.

A very simple and easy to implement Dashboard tool

Reviewed 2 years ago

Metabase is omnipresent in our company: everybody uses it everyday for one thing or another here. It was very easy to implement and we were able to offer great analytics quickly with it. It is not the most advanced tool avaliable, but it offers amazing value as an open source product. It is difficult for us to move away from it because its very expensive competitors offer very little comparatively.

Pros

I love that Metabase is open source and extremely easy to implement. It also offer somewhat advanced features considering its simplicity (like email and slack integrations). I also like the fact that it is a SQL first tool and doesn't require any specific knowledge to use. If you can use SQL you can use Metabase to amazing results and give your company great BI. As an open-source product, Metabase is also constantly evolving: each update comes with new features that are useful for us.

Cons

I believe has efforts in building a metrics and self-service analytics layer (like Looker) but is not very well integrated with the product and seems very complicated to use. Also some of the features have bugs, but most of the time they are fixed very quickly.

Metabase: best UI

Reviewed 2 years ago

Pretty good. I used daily to check my product KPI's. It helped my a lot.

Pros

The UI. It's the best UI for a dashboard software that I ever used. It's so simple and beautiful.

Cons

Besides it has the pretties UI in my opinion, I think tableau has more options to visualize charts. It should have more options for charts and customization.

It's great, but sometimes it runs very slowly

Reviewed 2 years ago

It has two main functions for me - converting data entered into Google Sheets by colleagues into a suitable format for us to be able to upload it as payment data via an SQL script. And secondly, for me to collect any data I require from our company database in Metabase - with an SQL script, I can find everything I want and I cannot express with words how useful that is for me every day!

Pros

I use Metabase to run SQL scripts to find data from our large database - which is itself stored in Metabase. Metabase is an amazing tool for storing vast quantities of data. It's integration with SQL is just fantastic, it makes it really easy for me to run a script to find virtually any data I need from our company's performance. I also like that I can then download it as a CSV with ease. I also use Metabase to run SQL scripts created by colleague's as part of our employee payment process - it works really well with google sheets for this. Finally, I like that it comes up with suggestions when I'm writing SQL about data columns and tables. It's really good and makes using SQL easy.

Cons

It can be so slow sometimes - quite often I have to use it late at night when fewer colleagues are also accessing it and it seems to go much faster then. This can be so frustrating, because I occasionally need some data urgently and this really impacts my productivity. It can also be extremely slow when downloading data from Metabase into a CSV file (sometimes then failing after ages of waiting), and even re-ordering columns within Metabase. Perhaps this isn't attributable to Metabase - but I also find the error messages when I run SQL through it to be utterly incomprehensible and they do not give me any real indication of what I've done wrong.

Easy to use data base visualization tool

Reviewed 2 years ago
Pros

Metabase helps to get an overview of your SQL data. If you are working with a database that is self-developed, a tool like metabase helps you visualize, filter and make sense of your data. Company-wide and across our Organization, we use metabase to keep track of KPIs and manage our 1p data.

Cons

To get started, Metabase is not super easy to comprehend. If you want to create custom dashboards or filter views, some SQL programming experience is definitely required. Furthermore, the larger your database, the longer dashboards or filter views take to load. Page Speed could definitely be improved.

Great for user look up, account details and client information as well as website tracking

Reviewed 2 years ago

Love the way it works with our needs (account look up and contest tracking for points and winners)

Pros

We use it for client information (account details) and it pulls the information seasmlessly. And once you have someone that knows how to build more into it, the details are all there at your fingertips (we had someone add a Google lookup).

Cons

None to date - we like how it functions and it suits the needs of Customer Support.

Analytics at your fingertips!

Reviewed 3 years ago

I would rate Metabase 8/10. It's a simple but powerful tool for data visualization & analytics.

Pros

The most liked thing about this software is both tech & non-tech folks can use it seamlessly, in a hassle-free manner. You can analyze with the help of Query Language or you can do the same analytically manually, much like excel. It's easily integrable with other software via a generic API. They have a self-hosted version as an offering as well, which you get for free :)

Cons

It gets too slow when all your team members start using it simultaneously. Many a time system chokes & keep loading for sometimes.

Easy to write custom queries

Reviewed 3 years ago

I use it for all sorts of data analysis. Mainly reviewing customer orders, displaying sales reports and reviewing accounts to make sure they are complete.

Pros

It's very easy to write custom queries and perform data analysis! Metabase provides a read-only front-end connection to multiple databases and allows me to write and save queries and questions, and then I can package them up into links and dashboards for my team to use.

Cons

It doesn't allow joins between different databases. It's not possible to use it as a data lake or data aggregator between sources.

Overall quite happy. Over 100 active users using it daily. Extremely easy to setup, deploy and get started. No barriers.

Pros

Extremely easy to setup at a click of a button Using the open source version Easy to create reports Pulse feature quite useful Neat user interface makes it easy to use

Cons

Contributing back to metabase is difficult because it is written in coffeescript. The open source installation tends to crash for larger loads. Requires some configuration which is not trivial.

Metabase works reliably with no bugs and minimum downtime. Experience has overall been great!

Pros

Metabase is very easy to use even for users with minimum tech knowledge. Ability to save different questions, use filters, ability to make dashboards- makes it a handson tool for any data driven company

Cons

There is significant delay and latency when worked with more data. More features around dashboarding and insights would be helpful.

From blind to data driven

Reviewed 4 years ago

The overall experience is awesome, especially for having all these reports across the company

Pros

To be very honest I'm only a user. We used to have no data from our client's usability and now we have many dashboards across the company. Not sure how easy it is to customise, we depend on our data team t do all the setup, so they are usually the bottlenecks and not the tool itself

Cons

Don't have any specifics that I don't like, the only one is that I don't have access to build my own reports but it's a permission thing from our side. Also, we could have more option for colors when it comes to the dashboards

Get data-driven with Metabase!

Reviewed 5 years ago

My overall experience with Metabase is great. It has given me appreciation for the use of data. Instead of relying on intuition and instinct, we now rely on cold hard facts.

Pros

I love Metabase. Firstly, it has allowed our company to interact with our data and get data driven. Secondly, it is easy to learn the coding language associated with it. SQL is straightforward. Lastly, you can build dashboard inside it to make data analysis and representation easier.

Cons

There aren't many negative things to say about Metabase. There are times when it goes down or the query can load slowly. Aside from this, I am satisfied with it.

Helpful when it works

Reviewed 5 years ago

Overall, when Metabase works, it's instrumental in making business decisions.

Pros

I like that I'm able to aggregate data in reports and use that to make processes more efficient. I like that it makes it easy for me to see key data.

Cons

Often, the reports I'm using take forever to load, which isn't efficient. Additionally, a lot of times the report I need the most won't load or download.

A user review for Metabase

Reviewed 5 years ago

This software allows me to understand the numbers and data of my company in making decisions and initiatives that helps us speed up the processes around. Overall, it solves the problem and the product itself is a winner for data management purposes.

Pros

It offers fast approach in accessing data and numbers about our company. I do not know much about SQL programming but this software is surely a winner for me because it helps users like me to understand data without having to deal with a lot of coding.

Cons

It sometimes gets buggy and slow in rendering data. Especially when mutliple users are accessing it. Also, if they add more features on it like more custom filters and table editing like excel.

Amazing tool for Business intelligence and visualization!

Pros

I love the fact that the software is open source and has all the functionality we need. The community around it is great and the self-hosted option is free! Our team loves using it, and we moved from an industry leader to this software with no complaints.

Cons

Because it is self-hosted, we had some administration issues, plus updating the software can be a pain. I know that some of these issues can be mitigated with the cloud-hosting option but the price makes it hard to justify.
