SketchUp's key features

GetApp's analysis of 95 verified user reviews collected between July 2021 and July 2024 identifies SketchUp's most critical features and summarizes user sentiment about those features.

Data import/export

Reviewers highlight SketchUp's data import/export capabilities as a valuable aspect. They appreciate the wide range of supported file formats, including SKP, PNG, JPG, DWG, DXF, DAE, and more. Users report that it facilitates interoperability with other software like AutoCAD, Lumion, and Blender. They find it easy to import and export 3D models, enhancing workflow efficiency. However, some users mention limitations in the free version and occasional issues with complex object imports. Of the 48 SketchUp users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Data Import/Export, 96% rated this feature as important or highly important.

Component library

Reviewers appreciate SketchUp's component library for its extensive 3D Warehouse, which offers a vast selection of pre-made models. They find it saves time and effort by providing ready-to-use components that can be customized. Users report that the library is well-organized and easy to access, making it a significant time-saver. They also value the ability to upload and share their own models, contributing to a collaborative community. Of the 43 SketchUp users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Component Library, 91% rated this feature as important or highly important.

2D drawing

Reviewers indicate that SketchUp's 2D drawing capabilities are helpful for creating layouts and detailed plans. They find the integration with SketchUp Layout beneficial for generating professional 2D drawings automatically. Users appreciate the intuitive and variable functions like Annotate, Context, and Real-world scale. However, some users feel that SketchUp's 2D drawing precision is not as high as other software like AutoCAD, but it is still functional for basic outlines and sketches. Of the 26 SketchUp users who gave detailed accounts of their use of 2D Drawing, 88% rated this feature as important or highly important.

Landscape design

Users report that SketchUp is useful for landscape design, allowing for the creation of detailed and realistic models. They appreciate the ability to apply various materials and textures to surfaces, depicting elements like grass, soil, and water. Reviewers find it intuitive for designing curving landscape shapes and sophisticated garden designs. They also value the integration with third-party platforms for rendering and collaboration, although some mention that heavy objects can slow down the process. Of the 36 SketchUp users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Landscape Design, 83% rated this feature as important or highly important.

Third-Party integrations

Reviewers highlight SketchUp's third-party integrations as a significant advantage. They appreciate the ability to use plugins and extensions to enhance functionality and streamline workflows. Users report successful integrations with software like Lumion, V-Ray, and various CAD tools. They find that these integrations expand SketchUp's applications and improve productivity. However, some users note that the reliance on third-party extensions can sometimes be confusing and lead to redundant tools. Of the 34 SketchUp users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Third-Party Integrations, 79% rated this feature as important or highly important.

Drafting

Reviewers feel that SketchUp's drafting capabilities are beneficial for creating quick renderings and visual content. They appreciate the ease of drafting in both 2D and 3D, making it simple to develop visuals for clients. Users report that the software is user-friendly and requires a minimal learning curve. They find it helpful for architectural and interior design concepts, although some prefer using other software like AutoCAD for more precise drafting and dimensioning. Of the 38 SketchUp users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Drafting, 79% rated this feature as important or highly important.

Although SketchUp has all the tools to produce very comprehensive images, rendering them into photorealistic pictures is what ultimately sells projects, and V-Ray is what you need to do it.
