Pros

It is an impressive open source software, really reliable. I love its PostGIS spatial module, which enables powerful geospatial functions.
After switching over from Access, it has been nice to be able to have a more robust experience.
It's a great relational database management system. It's open-source, free, reliable and secure.

Pros

This is a great way to leverage your data to get better metrics and results. The world is driven by data these days and this is a great way to leverage that.
Very good - SQL Server have so far been a joy to work with. Along with T-SQL support and Azure integration, we're very happy with its performance and environment, including cool data visualization.
I like that it's really stable and it doesn't consume a lot of resources. It's easy to use, highly customizable, and the performance is great.

Cons

Probably because of bad stats but from time to time the problem happens again.
Lot of features are missing from it as compared to the other products in the market.
I had skipped the few initial classes and missed the part where the professor taught how to use the app.

Cons

For instance, rather than receiving a syntax error, you can receive a weird message if you forget to include a comma while listing the fields you are asking for.
What I don't like most about this is that the error messages can be lacking sometimes leaving you puzzled as to what actually occurred.
For example if you miss a comma while listing out the fields you are querying for you can get a strange error rather than a syntax error.

A Decent Database System

Reviewed 2 years ago

Overall, this is a good database to use if you can't afford to pay for SQL Server. It works very reliably, and would be ideal for smaller databases or businesses.

Pros

It's relatively quick and reliable. We have used a PostgreSQL database for one of our systems for years and have never had a single problem.

Cons

The pgAdmin GUI seems a bit clunky to me. I much prefer the MS SQL Server Management Studio interface for SQL server.

Low-cost alternative to Microsoft SQL Server

Reviewed 3 years ago
Pros

Cost saving was the main benefit. We switched for the cost saving and also to stay in synch with our vendor Ellucian.

Cons

The transition period was challenging. In particular, we needed to bring on a temporary staff member to help rewrite our 1000+ reports and dashboards from the Microsoft SQL Server language to PostgreSQL. We used the free (unrelated) tool from SQLines to help with this task: https://sqlines.com/sql-server-to-postgresql. I wish the PGAdmin software had a better built-in search feature, but otherwise it seems to have all the same functionality as SQL Server Management Studio.

Amazing open source experience with a scalable database that just works.

Pros

Easy to use and scalable Open Source Database. Good indexing and search features, plus with json support you can easily make tables extendable and adaptable without schema changes.

Cons

Indexes aren't as quick on json fields, but are amazing for optimising standard fields. Importing and exporting data isn't quite as easy as SQL Server.

PostgreSQL

One of the many free but well supported Database products out there.

Reviewed 5 years ago
Pros

PostgreSQL is one of the most simple to install database systems out there. It supports all standard ansi sql types, and is stable enough to use in production without having to splash out on professional support at extensive costs. Getting support can assist in business uses though, but either way, it works well for basic SQL and data storage.

Cons

The package types for advanced management are non-standard and can be a bit of a learning curve if coming from Oracle PLSQL or Microsoft T-SQL

Very simple yet powerful

Reviewed 5 years ago

It has helped us to remove unnecessary distractions and focus on the main task of reducing time taken for queries. It is very fast and reliable with it's transactions. It helped us with high volumes of data. Postgres FDW was used to connect our existing SQL server databases.

Pros

It has a clean interface and does not tries to get an attractive UI for you. It has very less query time. It provides a good architecture for code first approach projects. We set it up on Linux and it does behaves pretty nice on it. We get to see what what we need to see while querying. It is quiet easy to edit the datatypes and design your schema. Also it provides some nice mining tools which can operate on our data. And the best thing about it is source code availability. We can do whatever we want.

Cons

It is slow for small database sizes but the issue erodes with database size increase. Also it has different syntax which might look complex to some.

review of PostgreSQL

Reviewed 5 years ago

All of project experiences have been a cross between oracle and ms sql server. I found out about PostgreSQL at a tech event and I was immediately impressed. A lot of features and parts of the query were already filled in for me. I just wish for PostgreSQL to become more widespread.

Pros

PostgreSQL is great for beginners as well as advanced users. It is designed to make SQL and querying more simpler and user friendly.

Cons

While PostGreSQL is great for being the most user friendly, it can also be a drag. PostGreSQl has different syntax as compared to other SQL databases and hosts. This can lead to someone messing up when going across different systems.

PostgreSQL is a free and robust relational database management system

Reviewed 4 years ago

With PostgreSQL we can manipulate our databases that contain large volumes of data. The main benefit is that it is completely free. Also, there is no limit amount for users that can be added in the administration of the database. Another benefit is that it is compatible with different programming languages.

Pros

I like PostgreSQL for different reasons: - It has flexible implementation options. - Large volume databases can be stored. - It is possible to have multiple databases on a single server and have different configurations for them. - PostgreSQL is completely free. - Its base language is SQL, making it very easy to manipulate. - It has excellent administration toolkits.

Cons

I dislike PostgreSQL for different reasons: - I don't like that the more detailed documentation is only available in English. - It has a high CPU consumption.

Amaing SQL Dialect and Database

Reviewed 4 years ago

Having PostgresSQL has enabled me to streamline development of many data pipelines. Not having to fumble over function parameters because of PostgresSQL's intuitive operations has improved my ease of work.

Pros

Love this dialect. I find many of the built in function improve experience but simplifying the needs for cryptic code. For example, changing from data type to another data type, one can use the :: operator. This operator is quick and easy to understand.

Cons

Unfortunately, sometimes code needs to be translated to more standard SQL that would work across multiple dialect. While the built in functions of PostgresSQL has improved my easy of use and because some of these functions are not standard SQL, I find myself having to continue using more cryptic, yet standard, SQL.

Microsoft SQL Server

An incredible database

Reviewed 6 years ago
Pros

It is a powerful database, with extra features of bank design, it is possible to program with it, making it one of the most competent alternatives

Cons

The fact that this bank do everything makes it superficial in some specific areas, as in OLAP cube management the best alternative is postgresql

SQL Server Review

Reviewed 5 years ago

All in all, I still enjoy using SQL Server on a daily basis and would recommend it as a high quality DBMS.

Pros

I have used other database management systems such as PostgreSQL but I really like the user interface of SQL Server. It is very intuitive and easy to use. The "intellisense" is also really quick and helpful.

Cons

The search function of SQL Server is almost nonexistent. Once your database gets really big, it's hard to navigate to the table that you want to check its schema, etc, or trying to find a keyword in a stored procedure.

Microsoft SQL Server

A very robust SQL solution. Offers great flexibility with little fuss.

Reviewed 7 years ago
Pros

It is perfect for SMEs. The support is great and the fact that is backed by Microsoft is a very big plus. Also, one of the biggest plus is the multi-CPU query support which is great for CPU intensive work.

Cons

The documentation is very unwieldy and hard to get. The procedural language is a lot of other open-source competitors such as PostgreSQL due it's speed and features that it offers.

MSSQL not for all

Reviewed 6 years ago
Pros

Good, stable, fast SQL database engine. For big software solutions.

Cons

Hard to setup cause many system and hardware requirements. For projects I prefer to use PostgreSQL or MySQL, but its not professional way in the M$ IT world. But maybe I'm not professional? :)

Microsoft SQL Server

Its good for database but have less datatypes so that way memory is more consumed

Reviewed 5 years ago

Good experience, easy to use, rest things are comman.SQL is easy to use in this database.

Pros

Good for database management, provides easier connectivity with programming languages. Easy to use .

Cons

Less datatypes that consume more memories others databases like postgreSQL have more datatypes. Basically there should be few more datatypes consuming lesser memory like in java we have short, bytes, integer and long.

SQL Server is not 4 all

Reviewed 5 years ago
Pros

I've been creating database applications for over a dozen years, I've had to use Microsoft SQL Server several times, but I did not like it at all. It has, of course, great possibilities, it is a relational database, scalable, etc, but to web applications better to use the popular MySQL (MariaDB) or PostgreSQL, which are offered in hosting on Linux servers. SQL Server unfortunately requires expensive server licenses and its availability for such applications is rather unprofitable.

Cons

expensive license, the need to install on Windows servers
