Bytebase overview

What is Bytebase?

Bytebase is an open-source database governance platform that standardizes how engineering teams and AI agents access, change, and audit databases.

For database change management, Bytebase provides schema and data change workflows with review and approval, automated SQL review with 100+ built-in rules, Git-based workflows, GitOps integration, schema comparison and synchronization, rollout controls, backup and rollback, and a complete database change history.

For database access control, Bytebase provides a browser-based SQL editor with centrally managed database connections, granular permissions, just-in-time and time-bound access, approval workflows, dynamic data masking, query history, data export controls, and centralized auditing.

Bytebase also provides database governance for AI agents. Instead of giving an AI agent a raw database connection or shared credential, organizations can give each agent its own governed identity and apply authorization, just-in-time access, masking, review, approval, and audit controls to agent activity.

Through Bytebase's MCP server, AI agents can query databases through a governed path rather than connecting directly with raw database credentials. Sensitive data can be masked before it reaches the model, and schema or data changes proposed by an agent can be routed through SQL review and approval workflows before execution.

For security and compliance, Bytebase records database changes, access activity, approvals, AI agent activity, and administrative actions in a central audit trail. Enterprise capabilities include SSO, SCIM, custom roles, approval policies, and Terraform-based management.

Bytebase supports PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, and 20+ database engines, allowing organizations to apply consistent governance across heterogeneous database environments. It integrates with common Git platforms, enterprise identity systems, Terraform, and AI tools through Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Bytebase can be used through Bytebase Cloud or deployed inside an organization's own infrastructure. Self-hosted deployments can operate in private networks and air-gapped environments, helping organizations keep database credentials and traffic within their own environment.

Typical users include developers, DBAs, DevOps/SRE, platform engineering, security and compliance teams, as well as AI agents that need controlled access to enterprise databases. Bytebase is particularly useful for organizations managing multiple databases or environments, handling sensitive production data, adopting AI agents, or needing a consistent and auditable process for database operations.
