They find it helps reduce errors, redundancies, and improves clarity. Users report that it provides valuable suggestions for rewording clunky sentences and offers a visually appealing interface. However, some mention it can be less functional than Word and occasionally slow to respond. They also note the need for better integration with other apps like Google Docs and Word. Grammar check

Reviewers indicate ProWritingAid's grammar check is thorough and helpful for identifying grammar mistakes that can obscure the message. They appreciate the explanations provided for corrections, which help improve their understanding of grammar rules. Users report it is particularly beneficial for non-native speakers and those who type quickly. However, some feel it can make writing flat and lifeless, and occasionally flags false errors. They find it more comprehensive than other tools like Word. Of the 51 ProWritingAid users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Grammar Check, 96% rated this feature as important or highly important.

See related user reviews

“Absolutely essential for editing software. Great in some ways but lacking in specific ways. As a novelist I find it often attempts to edit out my voice and style. It has a tendency to make writing flat and lifeless so as a user you really need to know that if you aren't arguing with the suggestions it makes at least 30% of the time, you are likely harming the value of your work. This may not apply to a non-fiction technical work where this is likely better suited.”

Spell Check

Users report ProWritingAid's spell check is essential for catching spelling errors and ensuring correct word usage. They appreciate its ability to handle both US and UK English, and its smart suggestions for different words. Reviewers find it helpful for catching minute mistakes and typos, although some note it can miss certain errors and flag names or academic references incorrectly. They often use it in conjunction with other tools like Grammarly for a more comprehensive check. Of the 43 ProWritingAid users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Spell Check, 93% rated this feature as important or highly important.

“I like the spell check in general but I do use it in conjunction with Grammarly free and just use my own knowledge to accept or deny suggestions. Most of them are ok but sometimes I disagree with suggestions. One thing that I do find really helpful is that it can help me write in US or UK English as I'm an Australian writer. ”

“This feature is the bread and butter of editing, and ProWritingAid does it EXTREMELY well. With that in mind though, it has the tendency to miss some things that other softwares pick up. Which is why I always run it through PWA first, then through other softwares like word or Grammarly. ”

Punctuation Check

Reviewers find ProWritingAid's punctuation check valuable for ensuring consistent and correct punctuation. They appreciate its ability to handle advanced punctuation like semicolons and dashes, and its helpful explanations for corrections. Users report it is particularly useful for those who struggle with punctuation placement. However, some mention inaccuracies with certain punctuation rules and find the curly vs. straight quotation marks capability annoying. They indicate it is a critical tool for producing polished writing. Of the 31 ProWritingAid users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Punctuation Check, 90% rated this feature as important or highly important.

“It highlights when the punctuation is inconsistent. Very useful when dealing with dialogue, and especially if an author forgets to close punctuation marks as a tic of theirs. I particularly like how it shows when curly or straight speech marks and apostrophes have been used. ”

“To use a semicolon or not to use a semicolon. THAT is the question! As with the Grammar Check, ProWriting Aid has extensive articles and explanations on the topic. So, if it does flag a sentence for poor punctuation, you can learn why and improve your writing on the spot! ”

Text review

Users report ProWritingAid's text review feature is helpful for providing an overall assessment of their writing. They appreciate its ability to adjust to different document types and formats, making it easier to focus on content creation. Reviewers find the readability analysis and feedback on writing quality particularly useful. However, some mention frustration with the grading system when certain corrections are not needed. They indicate it is a valuable tool for improving and refining their writing. Of the 17 ProWritingAid users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Text Review, 82% rated this feature as important or highly important.

“If this is the device that 'grades' the presentation, this is frustrating when some spelling does not need correction or some grammar or punctuation suggestions are refused. I can understand the 'grade' being affected by the grammar and punctuation, but not the spelling when names and other items particular to the text do not need correction.”

User opinions about ProWritingAid price and value

Value for money rating:

Of 86 reviews that provide robust commentary on ProWritingAid's price and value, 70% mention it in a positive light.

Some users report that ProWritingAid offers good value for money, particularly highlighting the lifetime subscription option as a cost-effective alternative to monthly or yearly fees. They appreciate the free version, which allows them to try the software before committing to a purchase. Reviewers indicate that the software is more affordable compared to competitors like Grammarly, and they often find discount codes online to reduce the cost further. Users think the lifetime license is beneficial for their budget, and they value the frequent updates included with this purchase. Some reviewers feel that the software’s features and functionalities justify the price, especially for professional writers.

However, some users say the software can be expensive, especially when additional fees for features like plagiarism checks are considered. They find the 500-word limit on the free version restrictive and feel that the premium version is costly compared to other tools. Some reviewers report dissatisfaction with the subscription model, preferring a one-time purchase option. Users also mention that old customers with lifetime subscriptions may not receive certain updates, and some feel the software’s grammar checking capabilities do not justify the high price.

“I have been using ProWritingAid since March 2020 as a replacement of Grammarly,  as this provides lifetime subscription, which is very much cheaper compared to Grammarly. Since it uses your account to authenticate, you can install this on an unlimited device.”

“You can almost always find a discount code online for 30%-40% off, though, to be honest, when compared to a product like Grammarly, their prices really aren't that steep, to begin with.”

“It's very expensive and a lifetime license to it can go up to $499 if you want plagiarism checks which you can only do 60 times a year.”

We looked at 497 user reviews to identify which products are mentioned as ProWritingAid integrations and how users feel about them.

Integration rating: 4.0 (25)

It works well in most cases, though it does have some blips here and there. If you're working with a document that is larger, I tend to have some lag issues when using the live grammar checker (but I don't blame the software for that, anything struggles with 160k+ words).

Microsoft Word and ProwritingAid work together to help me write better. The ProwritingAid toolbar installs in the Microsoft Word window and, as I type, it analyzes my text and offers suggestions for improvement.

I edit in Word. I love the Word Add-in it never malfunctions. I write in Scrivener, but the floating PWA everywhere often disappears and glitches with Scrivener. I would love a PWA add-in for Scrivener.

It's important, and it works well, but it's just that Word is not my primary writing mode. I begin my work in Atticus, which should have been listed as an option for this category.

Once you know what it is useful for, the word integration works well. It falls over if you try to do too much at once on large documents.

Only because I have to give my editor it in Word. I would rather she would move to Dave Chessons, Atticus which I'm considering.

Loved that I could use it right in my document while I wrote, but it caused too much lag for how fast I type.

I use MS Word for Mac every day. I am having real trouble making the integration work correctly.

I've had a few issues with the word add on over the years but overall it's a great tool.

On all the time - it gets in the way sometimes, but happy to have it on-board.

The prowriting aid extension makes it easy to edit the Google docs documents. But, only 500 words can be checked through the free version.

Less needed here, but I wanted a place to say that PWA has an extension that works wonderfully on every browser I've used it on.

On all the time - it gets in the way sometimes, but happy to have it on-board.
