Pros

Overall, the best time and billing software out there. I have demo'd several and Clio was the clear winner.
Great support and excellent cloud-based option at a very reasonable price. Glad to see regular improvements and updates, taking user feedback into account.
Great experience, great customer service, easy navigation and the best thing is that Clio keeps working to improve the platform and make it more helpful for us.

Pros

I love the ease of use and the ability to always have access to documents even after they are deleted.
As a sole practitioner I need software that helps keeping my files and billing organized. I have used Smokeball for a few years now and I really appreciate the ease of use and friendly, helpful staff.
Now I completely love that there are a lot of components to it. I absolutely love that SB is integrated with Outlook to save emails right to the client matter, this way I never forget to save them.

Cons

I hate when I am asked for instructions on setting up their client portal because I have no instructions to give them.
This is especially clear in light of its competition, Abacus or AbacusNext or AbacusLaw or whatever other evil derivative product they put out there which is all horrible in my experience.
My client started having trouble uploading her documents to me. Assignments went missing, and so deadlines were missed.

Cons

Missing deadlines while using this program are hard to come by.
Sometimes It can be slow to operate and the interface annoying.
Lack of notification about the messages inside the network.

Clio is great for a simple organization of client files and for billing clients. The bills are easy to read and understand for clients.

Pros

Clio is super easy to use and you can look at all your outstanding bills along with clients who have not paid those bills in one easy place.

Cons

Clio does not have all the features that other software such as smokeball has. Overall Clio is great for the price but if you are good spending more, you can get more features with another software

If you're a CIVIL firm, Clio excels with Rules Based Calendaring and has client portal, but no email

Since my firm is a Criminal Defense firm, and Clio would possibly be a good match for a Civil firm that does not care about email syncing and was very concerned with Rules based calendaring, Clio might be a good choice.

Pros

- Rules based calendaring *gotta admit, Clio rules here. - Workflow creation available. - Client portal available. - App is available - Can create a contact while creating a matter.

Cons

- No email syncing to a matter. If want to link an email to a matter, need to send the email, then go into Sent folder and connect the Sent email to a matter. - No auto future billing. So if you're a Cim Defense firm and your client needs to be on a payment plan and you want to be able for invoices to be automatically be sent to your client, Clio can't do this, MyCase is the only platform that can do this. - There's no automatic time-tracking, say, when you start creating an email to send to a client. - Pricing - Clio has 3 different levels of pricing where you don't get certain features unless you upgrade ($39, $59, or $99/mo). Other platforms like MyCase, PracticePanther or Smokeball, you get all the features without having to upgrade.

Best Practice Management Software for Small Firms

Pros

The multiple software integrations, unlimited, secure cloud storage and AI time tracking make his program second to none. I have used Clio, Practice Panther and custom case management software at a large firm, and Smokeball is vastly superior to all of these options.

Cons

The initial setup is time consuming especially if you have an existing practice with a lot of data.

You get what you pay for

Time and ease of mind knowing everything is in one place.

Pros

The integration with word and outlook is better than any other mgmt software I have used. I was using Clio, but switched and have not thought twice or looked back. The document automation features in word make setting up a template a breeze. It's been more than expected.

Cons

Cost was the main concern I had going into this transition, but you get what you pay for and the time I save is extraordinary in comparison to other law practice mgmt software.

I have tried Lexis Nexus Firm Manager, Clio, MyCase, Amicus, Abacus, Rocket Matter, Credenza, Houdini, Bill 4 Time, Time matters... you name it. Smoke Ball is the best. Pros: The organization of information in one location is fantastic. The document automation works the way I had hoped the competitors' would work. The integration of Word and Outlook are amazing time savers. The new Ai feature is awesome. Con: No time and billing BUT this feature is in the works.
