Pros

They have superb customer service. I really liked how attentive they are to your needs and are very open to making sure your issues are resolved.
In the beginning the customer service was wonderful. The look is clean and user friendly and they have great tools and tutorials.
Kudos to their writer, who is worth her weight in gold). So I can say we are extremely happy that we switched to Theranest.

Pros

Love the calendar feature where it syncs with my Google calendar. Love the reminders for client appointments and how they can manage their own appointments.
I like the fact that we no longer have to have paper files, ease of use overall and some of the features like appointment reminders, the ability to create and add your own documents.
This software is richly featured. I've appreciated the ability to create very sophisticated custom online intake forms, and and the autopay enrollment for automated batch credit card billings.

Cons

I don't like that I am unable to speak with a customer service representative when I have a problem. I don't like having to schedule an appointment when it is a quick question.
Billing feature, it's complete crap. We tried to utilize their billing feature and it has not worked.
I have been very disappointed. I bundled my services when I started private practice and the company I bundled with use Theranest so this was my only option.

Cons

I have struggled most with billing—getting cards to not charge for missed appointments. Reminders have occasionally caught me off guard—either they went out too many times or not enough.
This annoyed me because my time is very valuable and I specifically set aside the time for my training and no one bothered to alert me that it had been canceled.
My main complaint is that I have had trouble getting someone on the phone when I have an issue. They do tend to respond by email quickly but sometimes I would prefer a phone conversation.

Theranest for Private Practice

I have used several scheduling and billing programs in my private practice and find Theranest to be a top contender. Theranest offers a wide variety of useful tools, such as scheduling, schedule reminders, electronic insurance claims, billing, documentation, and analytics for attendance, billing, and scheduling. I have been using Theranest for a few years now and find it to be relatively glitch-free, and when I encounter an issue or have a question, customer service is extremely helpful and quick to respond.

Pros

Theranest does a great job when it comes to submitting electronic insurance claims, creating superbills and/or invoices, and has plenty of storage for electronic files. Theranest also has an ios application that is user-friendly and helps with scheduling and task management.

Cons

The program is not very user-friendly, unlike SimplePractice which offers a more streamlined and clean look. Theranest needs to work on their calendar feature as it is not user-friendly or very practical.

Ease of use with documentation. It prefills for treatment goals.

Cons

After charging me an insanely high fee for managed billing, they refused to refund the deposit after I canceled the service with no services yet provided. The sales person told me the service would work for me even though I would be doing double the work since my billing platform and appointment scheduling is through a different provider. So paying double and doing double the work is what she thinks should work for me! She was very unprofessional and rude and her supervisor never contacted me to resolve the situation. I’m switching to SimplePractice after 4 years with TheraNest. I’m in a helping profession and wasn’t expecting to be treated so poorly and dismissed after being a loyal customer.

It's been awesome!

Ease of use! I previously had paid subscriptions to Therapy Notes, Theranest, and one other software that wasn't that memorable as I tried to find the right fit for me.

Pros

Ease of use! I've tried three other popular services and this one beats them all. I love that the app is available on my phone. I have been able to register new clients immediately and I am so glad my clients can now make their own appointments if they chose to. Haven't found a con yet. I am still learning the software but it is the most intuitive software I've come across yet.

Pros

I made the decision to purchase this over Theranest, which is what I use now, because it had a more functional phone app. It was relatively easy to set up. It was pretty user friendly. Able to put in my own documents for handouts for clients.

Cons

The claims of one of my main insurances, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, kept getting rejected because of the clearinghouse they use. The claims never got to BCBSGA. Clearinghouses need to be able to connect with Availity, which theirs did not. They also went up $20/months within a few months of being with them. Also, customer service was not very prompt.

Pros

What kept me with SimplePractice instead of TherapyNotes or TheraNest was the ability to make a variety of completely customized forms and upload your own forms, allowing me to make my ENTIRE practice paperless. If you want full control this is for you.

Cons

The app for your phone is not as robust as some of the others. It is more work to set up if you want a lot of standard fillable forms or a complex progress note.

This is a great program to manage my practice.

Pros

I like how simple it is to set up. I tried Theranest and was completely frustrated. When I switch to try this one, I was amazed at how much easier it was. When I did have some confusion about insurance, I found their customer service to be very attentive and their written answer to a question very thorough.

Cons

This is a steep learning curve for me but understanding and setting up billing information is not as intuitive as I would like.

I like the intuitive nature of the program. I appreciate that the progress notes are not cumbersome.

Cons

1) The cost of adding additional users is too high compared with other programs, specifically TheraNest. For a small practice such as mine where I have two interns, I think having to pay money per intern to add them to my account is too much. TheraNest offers a competitive rate based on number of active clients. I'm not suggesting Simple Practice adopt this model, but I think the rate to add interns...

Simple and Intuitive to Use Compared to Other Options Out There

SimplePractice has overall been very easy to use and has made my practice very efficient. It does take a little investment of time to learn and get used to and I am still on the learning curve but overall I find it really intuitive and easy to use. I also really like the look and feel of the interface. It feels clean and professional.

Pros

I found SimplePractice to be far easier and more intuitive to use than some of the other options out there (TherapyNotes and TheraNest were two others that I tried and did not like so much). I also like that SimplePractice uses Stripe to process payments as it made accepting payments streamlined and easy--I do not have to sign up for a third party payment processor and pay an additional monthly fee like you do with some of the other options out there.

Cons

I still have issues with getting my SimplePractice calendar to show up on my android device. Though it is synced with my Google Calendar for some reason I Cannot get this to translate over to my mobile device. This really bothers me as I don't like that I have to check two calendars when I am trying to quickly check my availability. (I realize this may be due to something I am overlooking on my part, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.)

Simple Practice for private practice

I initially tried the free trial and almost stopped using the service, because I thought it was confusing. After finally speaking with customer care, I understood the program better and feel comfortable using it. I've used Simple Practice for a few months now and find it to be acceptable. It might be a little better than TheraNest, which I had for 3 years.

Pros

It is relatively user friendly, with many features to customize use. Like being able to set up default codes and fees for each client

Simple Practice lives up to its name...and then some!

Aside from the invoice numbering I have had the most seamless experience transitioning into a sole private practice. Having had experience with Theranest (as part of a group private practice) and the frustrations that ensued with the non-intuitive format of client pages, the back and forth needed to complete notes from the scheduler, and group notes issues, Simple Practice could not be simpler. And customer service is also very helpful! I would strongly recommend it to anyone looking to start a private practice on the right foot, or transition from paper to electronic health record.

Pros

The ease with which I can do everything needed to run my own practice, at an affordable cost.

Cons

The default for invoice numbering, which cannot be adjusted.

Cons

reporting, cost if you have a group, the only credit card company support is Stripe's API and they have a minimum of per month volume before they will lower their fee's.
