Successful Backups for 8 years

Reviewed a year ago

We are using NAKIO for about 8 years now for internally and for our customers. The product has evolved over time from a cheap and simple VMware backup solution to a backup suite providing a lot of options and features. We have successfully deployed instances of VMware backup, replication, WAN replication, O365 backup, physical workstation backup, replication to amazon and multi-tenancy.

Pros

They provide great support. Over time when we had issues they always went out of their way to provide satisfactory solutions. It is very easy to setup and use regardless of the size of installation. They still provide an affordable product and I believe you definitely will get your money's worth. There is a lot of active development and not only toward new features, but also in improving stability and performance. They try to get feedback from their userbase when planning for new features.

Cons

We have had problems with file level recovery on large (>1 TB) XFS file systems. Space reclaim of backup repositories is slow, but has been improved recently.

Exactly what we needed

Reviewed a year ago
Pros

Ease of setup, ease of administration, and reliability! Not to mention the very reasonable cost and superb email communication with the company.

Cons

Our needs were quite specific and we only had a few protected machines. That said, I genuinely don't have anything to enter in this field.

Easy to use, robust, cost-effective

Reviewed 4 months ago

It covers all my company's needs, at a fraction of the cost of other backup solutions.

Pros

I first tried Nakivo five years ago. It took me less than 10 minutes from starting the setup, to running my first backup. Everything was so intuitive, that there was no need to read any documentation. Very fast recovery at VM and file level. Considering the price, choosing Nakivo was a no-brainer. With each new version, Nakivo gets better and better. New features are added and existing ones are improved.

Cons

- Support for tape backup is a bit primitive. - Compression and data deduplication algorithms could be improved. For the same data, vSphere Data Protection (based on EMC Avamar) uses half the repository space.

Nakivo Backup is a great value for any SMB

Reviewed a year ago

Perpetual License, is my number 1 decisions to go with Nakivo. Nakivo does not require a lot of CPU/Memory and can be utilized on Synology backup solutions that do not include Active Backup for Business.

Pros

Other competitors' products are all subscription-based, whereas Nakivo is perpetual and packed with features found in enterprise backup solutions. Nakivo supports Hyper-V and ESXi without additional fees, and the enterprise version of Nakivo allows you to back up desktop workstations, encrypt backups, compress, duplicate, and back up to the cloud (google archive, wasabi, azure, aws.) The UI is simple and straight forward best of all Nakivo assigns a technician to provide you with training without additional costs. The software is intuitive and simple to pick up.

Cons

Downloading and applying the correct update for the system. I found it difficult and had to download multiple before landing on the correct update.

I use Nakivo in the 95% of my customers. It's an excellent software.

Pros

Nakivo is an amazing software, flexible and easy to deploy. We use it in a lot of our customers IT infrastructures. The price is affordable for features in a virtual environment. The linux-based environment for the server and the transporters grant availability, efficiency and cost reduction.

Cons

Lack of some features, like surebackup with services check. The ETA is not accurate as well as the progress bar. Also the log and history can be improved.

Great support and always new features being added that I need

Reviewed a year ago

We got tired of the massive cost of renewals from our past backup software providers and decided to try Nakivo instead. They supported our need for Nutanix AHV, QNAP and Tape backups. I'm looking forward to trying the new PostgreSQL database option soon so that I can build my own reports. Nakivo gets the job done and gets better with each version.

Pros

- We really like being able to create a backup copy from our Windows Backup server to a QNAP NAS for immutable backups over our WAN to another site. - Synthetic full backups make daily backups fast. - I like how fast I can restore a VM to Hyper-V, even if the backup was from Nutanix, and even if the backup storage is on my QNAP NAS.

Cons

- SQL Backups on Nutanix do not support hourly log backups like they do on Hyper-V, so we worked around that with an inexpensive tool called "SQL Backup Master". - No support for Microsoft SQL Server yet

Not Rolls Royce but probably Mercedes...

Reviewed a year ago

Cheaper than Veeam, better than some other options. The proof is in the recovery! It's more focussed on VMWare than Hyper-V but support for Hyper-V is acceptable. Just be sure you are familiar with the features that are and are not supported for the platform you wish to protect before proceeding. The licensing is quite flexible too, with perpetual and subscription licenses. The cost comparison...

Pros

Easy to set up and get running. Flexible deployment, with the full solution (i.e. the "brain") running directly on supported NAS hardware, Linux OS, physical or virtual machines. Getting help is as easy as clicking "Request Support" on an error message in the WebUI. A support bundle is created and sent to Nakivo and you very quickly receive an email with a case number, followed by responses from real people.

Cons

Better error messages would be nice - they don't always make sense. The "brain", which is the Director component, can only exist in one place in a distributed deployment with different locations. This means that a remote site will not back up if there is a connectivity issue between sites and the Director cannot see the transporter and repositories at the remote site.

A great cost effective VM backup solution

Reviewed 2 months ago

After trying similar programs this one stood out due to the ease of use and ability to purchase a perpetual license. As a smaller company the subscription based softwares end up being much more expensive in the long run.

Pros

I liked how fast it is. Backing up a virtual machine, even offsite and doing it encrypted, is very fast. It is pretty easy to use once you get a feel for how it works. The email alerts are also very helpful, I can leave Nakivo unattended so it just runs on its own and simply monitor my email for alerts on if the jobs were successful or not. Their support is very good as well if you need help.

Cons

Updating can be a real hassle. It depends on your environment though, but with me updating my NAS transporter version ended up turning into a much bigger process than I had anticipated. Their support was able to get me up and running again, but still I wish it was easier to update on my own.

Nakivo Backup & Replication TOP!

Reviewed a year ago

I use Nakivo Backup & Replication to backup 8 VMs which are distributed on 2 physical servers. Daily backup is done on a different storage, I've do a restoration test of many files and these datas was restored without any problems. It seems exceptional to me since I have had support from the technical team, something not seen in other products and this feature is UNIQUE! The cost is also accessible and appropriate to the product, that is renewed year after year with new features and excellent user experience, always improved both in terms of speed and simplicity in its use. Come on, go on like this!

Pros

The best feature in Nakivo is the VM backup. The VM backup is simple to deploy and the maintenance is very little. Nakivo Backup & Replication is very easy to use and configure.

Cons

Updates on Nakivo VA can do only via host but not via web GUI and in my case it was very slow. Could you please develop this thing?

A beautifully engineered solution that doesn't assume everyone uses Windows

Reviewed 3 years ago

It's as close to bullet proof as we've seen. Our backups run nightly and on the occasion when we need to restore, there are some very flexible ways of getting either individual files, VMDKs or entire VMs out the other end. We have yet to try out the non-VM backup but we suspect that at some point we will throw that out and move it all to Nakivo.

Pros

It's an elegant combination of Java and Linux with a straightforward web-based interface and it never lets us down. We feel completely comfortable with Nakivo protecting our backups and best of all, it means we don't have to install a load of Windows-based systems that we don't want or need just to run it.

Cons

It's not cheap. It does work out slightly more cost effective than Veeam, and the saving of effort and hassle of it being Linux-based was enough justification for us to buy it in the end.

Perfect backup for small and mid-sized business

Reviewed 4 years ago

Nakivo is simply the best solution for our customers. Of course there are other products out there with more features, but we really don't need them. Pricing and feature set are exactly right for our small and mid-sized customers. For the future we hope, that Nakivo will continue this,

Pros

Easy to deploy software, which is suitable for all of our customers. We like the possibility to run it as a downloadable virtual appliance. So, we always have it running in a few minutes. Starting as a solution for backing up virtual infrastructures (vSphere / Hyper-V), it becomes more and more feature complete. Today it has all featured we need for our customers, including physical backup. We really like controlling the software with command-line and API. Integration with our remote monitoring was simple. Also, the sales team always finds good solutions, when there are tricky licensing request from our customers.

Cons

There are no real cons to mention. Sometimes we wish, that the logs in the UI would tell more details, when it comes to errors. But we always were able to sort it out.

The best choice

Reviewed 4 years ago
Pros

This software is easy to setup and use. The price is competitive and can be afforded also in very little company or offices (SOHO) assuring security at low cost. The availability of the transporter module with most of NAS system (also SOHO) let the company work also with low cost devices. The option to have a flash VM boot reduces the RTO and the forever incremental backups (very fast) reduces the RPO.

Cons

No availability for Citrix XEN and a full screen interface (the calendar would be more readable).

Good and intuitive procduct

Reviewed a year ago

We are using Nakivo B&R for our new server with quite a number of virtual machines (VM Ware). Backup of data is onto a Synology via 10GB/s. The backup makes use of all available network speed. Once you understand how it works, its configuration is straight forward. Whenever we experienced some issues, Nakivo Service was very helpful (GoTo meeting) and pretty fast (next day at the latest). So far no complaints on their repsonse.

Pros

Quite intuitive. Comparably fast backup. Price / performance value is good. Good service.

Cons

USB rotation (to external harddrives) definitely needs improvement. Licensing scheme is a bit hard to understand at first glance ... but their sales will help you ;-) A little bit of too aggressive marketing (less would be better).

Cost Effective And Brilliant Backup And Replication Strategy

Brilliant solution, cost effective. The product is easy to implement and works just as good as advertised. It surpassed our expectations.

Pros

Easy backups and replications that help keep us safe and secure! Ability to store locally and in cloud is a plus
