Plottr's key features

GetApp's analysis of 142 verified user reviews collected between October 2022 and December 2024 identifies Plottr's most critical features and summarizes user sentiment about those features.

Templates

Reviewers appreciate Plottr's templates for their variety and flexibility. Users report that the extensive library of pre-made templates, including genres like romance and mystery, saves time and enhances story structure. They find the ability to create, modify, and save custom templates particularly valuable. Users also highlight the ease of comparing plotlines and organizing complex storylines. Some reviewers wish for more templates focused on screenwriting and additional functionalities like timeline tracking, but overall, they find the templates a significant aid in their writing process. Of the 90 Plottr users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Templates, 89% rated this feature as important or highly important.

See related user reviews

“Being able to create templates make it easy to create a character plot line and save it so that alternate plotlines can be created for the character. Also the feature makes it easy to compare the plotlines of characters. Of course, having a catalog of story structure templates created by others, but that can be modified, to choose from makes pretty quick work of putting a story skeleton together that fits the needs of the story I'm trying to tell.”

“There are SO many plotting templates to choose from, and they are continually adding more. I have used a couple of the romance templates and it saves so much time. You can also create your own templates, which I've done before for both story plotting but also for scene templates.”

Drag & drop

Users find Plottr's drag-and-drop capability essential for organizing scenes and chapters. Reviewers indicate that this capability allows them to easily rearrange elements within their timeline, enhancing their workflow and creativity. They appreciate the intuitive nature of moving scene cards both horizontally and vertically, which helps in visualizing and refining their story structure. Some users mention minor bugs, but overall, they feel this capability is a critical time-saver and enhances the fluidity of their writing process. Of the 81 Plottr users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Drag & Drop, 86% rated this feature as important or highly important.

See related user reviews

“This is the core of my use case: being able to create, move, and delete scene cards at will throughout my project. This was why I bought Plottr in the first place. The process for creating timelines is easy and intuitive; you can be up and going in a few minutes if you start with this function, then tackle the other functions as you need them.”
LC

“This is one of the reasons why I like Plottr: when I organize the scenes of the movie I'm writing, being able to drag&drop those scenes around it's critical to my job.”

Notes management

Reviewers highlight Plottr's notes management as a key aspect for organizing their writing projects. Users appreciate the ability to tag, color-code, and categorize notes, making it easy to track characters, settings, and plot points. They find it helpful to have all notes in one place, reducing clutter and improving accessibility. Some users suggest improvements in formatting options and linking notes, but they generally find this capability flexible and customizable, aiding in capturing and organizing their ideas effectively. Of the 86 Plottr users who gave detailed accounts of their use of Notes Management, 84% rated this feature as important or highly important.

See related user reviews

“This is one the highlights of Plottr. Regardless of how you take notes, Plottr has a way of being useful to authors. There is a section for "Notes" that is a traditional note-taking area. I use this to remind myself of items to include in my story and elaborate on ideas. There's another section called "Timeline" that allows you to layout the novel on a timeline, chapter-by-chapter. What's great here is that you can again, add notes to anything you place on the timeline. If you're an outliner, there is a section specifically for this, which again allows you to add notes. The same applies to characters and places. You can make notes on any of these. But the real power comes in allowing the user to create tags and apply any number of tags to the categories above an color code them in a way that makes sense to you. This is great because all of us have different systems and methods and Plottr allows you to customize it to suit your needs, not the other way around. Use blue for settings, red for characters, green for plot points, yellow for symbolism, or any color tag for anything you desire. Whatever makes sense to you, Plottr accommodates it. ”

Scrivener logo
Scrivener

Integration rating: 4.7 (38)

I've used Plottr to create an outline in Scrivener with all the information I've already input. It was very easy to do and saved a lot of manual work. I'd like a little more control over the options as I ended up with some of my structure not the way I wanted it. I've only done that once so far, so I may have missed some controls. I'd also like a feature for pulling from Scrivener to Plottr. That would speed up creating outlines from existing material. I know that's difficult, but even having a tool for capturing just the names of scenes into a plottr file would speed up the work.

Scrivener allows me to do free-form writing while Plottr organizes the events in an easy-to-view manner. After organizing and reviewing in Plottr, I can correct the errors back in Scrivener. I look forward to trying Plottr's feature to export scene cards into Scrivener.

I was initially using Scrivener for my planning/background and it was ok but I needed something more visual/drag and drop style. Very easy to integrate and transfer existing notes to Planner. Saved me a lot of time having to rewrite.

I was using Scrivener, but I lost significant data when my cat unplugged my PC, so I went back to LibreOffice and sometimes SmartEdit. Would love to see SmartEdit integration, though the Scriv export might work, I haven't tested it.

Plotting in one program is useless if I can’t bring it over to my main writing program. The fact that they give you the option to export to two of the main writing programs used is great.

On the occasions when I use Scrivener instead of Word, I export my completed Plottr outlines to Scrivener and use them as the foundation for my manuscripts.

It's easy to create the plot in Plottr, and then write in Scrivener. I can either import the file or open them side by side. Either way it's very handy.

I do most of my writing in Scrivener, but prefer the Plottr timeline feature for it's visual aspect, especially when I'm trying to track characters.

I write my story in Scrivener and do have story files in the binder. The fact I can export my Plottr stuff into Scrivener is awesome!

As I can export to Scrivener I will develope the story in Plottr and export everything then to Scrivener to write the first draft.

I create the scenes at a high level in plotter but I write the actual text on Scrivener. Therefore its absolutely essential

I would like to be able to integrate to the latest version of Scrivener, however it still works exactly as I need it to.

Being able to upload all of the outlines, notes, etc. directly to Scrivener has literally changed the way I plot.

While Plottr does plotting and character creation much better, Scrivener is imperative for actual writing.

I write in Scrivener. I need to be able to go back and forth between the two programs as things change.

Scrivener is THE TOOL for writing so capability to move the scenes from Plottr to Scrivener is a must.

As I can write in scenes, export, make notes, use PWA software to edit.ales the writing process easy.

I use Scrivener a lot for my stories and if I can integrate Plottr then it's a plus for me.

With my last novel, I learned to love Scrivener and now use it as my primary writing tool.

I do all my writing in Scrivener. Being able to work together was hugely important to me.

The export of every aspect of Plottr to MS Word is essential. This gives me the ability to do my final polish on my manuscript without requiring me to do the work twice. Also, it's important to me to have the ability to export EVERYTHING for a project for archival (backup) purposes. Plottr makes sure I never lose a word of my novel and character maps!

I have the software on my desktop but the Word integration allows me to take my work anywhere on my laptop, tablet or phone. I don't have to worry about forgetting a relevant piece of information.

I can recommend Plottr to writing clients and friends who don't use Scrivener. It also gives me the option to download a quick outline for myself if needed.

Still one of the easiest and most powerful set of tools to help a person write. For me it's in outlining when it comes to story.

Upgrading to Plottrpro broke this feature but I'll contact support, I'm sure they can fix it.But this is an amazing feature.

I regularly export my completed Plottr outlines to Word and use them as the foundation for my manuscripts.

I do all my writing in MS Word, and it's essential that I can save my projects and use them with them.

I go directly from plottr to word, and it was INTEGRAL that this transitioned smoothly.

I write the book in Scrivener and export to Word to finish and format for publication.

I LOVE being able to bring my outline over to Microsoft Word to continue my writing.
