Cheap CAD design software

Pros
Cloud platform for collaboration with teammates, sharing, frequent updates, public CAD database, training programs, attention to detail of team and focusing on updates

Cons
Functionality with solid works and other CAD. Has not reached critical mass on users to be industry leader. Would like more public files for download (CAD database)

Cheap, cloud based, and almost full functioning.

Pros
It is could based. You never have to save, nothing is ever lost. It takes some getting used to if you are coming from another system, but I recommend it to friends all the time.

Cons
The features have been coming pretty quickly, but for me, a lot of the ways I am used to doing things have to be done a different way or occasionally (but less often lately) can't be done. Specifically with surface modeling

Cloud 3D CAD. No local machine crash or power outage can affect your work. Switch computers, or switch to a iPad or phone any time. No saving your work.

Pros
Runs on any platform. Low cost. Professional 3D CAD is now free to the hobbyist and cheap for professionals. No massive annual fee like AutoDesk or SolidWorks. In a few years they will be gone. Neither can adapt to cloud CAD fast enough to catch up with OnShape, and they have the baggage of giant corporations to carry. No chance.

Cons
Still a new product. Features are being added regularly. Struggles in performance with large circular and linear arrays.

I was able to provide CAD models to my clients when I could not afford SolidWorks

Pros
It doesn't use up memory space on my computer. I like the variety of mate choices. I like the price.

Cons
When the internet goes down I have nothing. Mating parts seems to require a lot more scrolling in and out as compared with SolidWorks.

Response from Onshape

Hi Frank! Thanks for your review. Our mating works a bit differently than most people are used to with some of our competitors, but we've found that once customers master it they prefer our method. I've provisioned you with access to one of our self-paced learning courses that focuses on mates. Hopefully that helps a bit! You can access it with your Onshape login at learn.onshape.com. Its cheaper than other more used software with less data storage.

Pros
I like how it is cloud based and I don't have to worry about storing any information. I also like the history tracking application and that it remembers everything I have ever changed and when.

Cons
I loath the the branched versions and how it seems to not like to merge with the original main branch. This leaves most at my company confused over which version is up to date and leaves models very incorrect. I also do not like how the models do not auto update and I do not care for the mating technique onshape has gone with. It is very tough to get a good handle on and leaves most of us frustrated and spending too much time for what should be an easy mates.

Being able to allow a new business like mine to afford professional 3D cad software. Ease of use anywhere

Pros
I like the customer support and the quick responses. Anticipation of new updates and improvements. Constant improvements. Price is good. Can take it anywhere on almost any device as long as internet connection is decent. Sharing is easy but I think could be better. works on mac! I don't need a fancy workstation.

Cons
BOMS!!! absolute worst and very frustrating. I tried both google sheets and OpenBOM and always end up very frustrated and never happy with the finished product. Need exploded views. That exploded view app is garbage Need sheet metal features added faster. Need to be able to add tabs for tab and slot designs. Everything feature that is added to a sheet metal part that will affect laser cutting needs to show up on the flat pattern. I hate and don't understand having the "finish sheet metal" feature. Drawing templates are also frustrating. trying to make a nice company template has been a struggle and I am still not happy with it. Importing to a DWT and modifying in a 2D cad software never reimports properly.

Transitioned from SolidWorks to OnShape with little hiccups. Did not need an expensive/powerful computer and good value.

Pros
Since it's all web based, I do not need a powerful computer as you would for other CAD softwares. Great to use on a MacBook.

Cons
Two things: 1. Applying mates is not as simple as in SolidWorks 2. Keyboard shortcuts (ability to go to isometric view quickly, etc)

Response from Onshape

I'm able to do everything I need design-wise within OnShape. The cloud storage, mobile support, and sharing options are great add ons.

Pros
I was able to pick it up very quickly with my SolidWorks experience, and it seems to be the most economical option for my small business.

Cons
The only cons I can think to list are that even though it's the most economical option out there, it is still expensive for a small business like mine. There have only been a handful of times I wanted to do something, and the functionality wasn't there. But I was always able to find a suitable work around.

More agile development cycle, ability to access work from multiple locations without worrying about file access / management.

Pros
No version management hassles, Rapid feature release schedule, mobile apps, pricing are all strong points of Onshape. Nothing beats being in a remote office or factory without your laptop, asking to use a computer and pulling up your entire CAD environment. It's only going to get better.

Cons
The current feature set is a little limiting, but is being rapidly addressed. Being cloud based (the other side of the cloud-benefit coin) means no access on a plane or in very low-bandwidth/high-latency applications. But honestly that doesn't factor much.

Pros
I don't need expensive cad hardware and the program is available at any place with internet connection. Onshape can import other cad file format so it is possible for me to cooperate with companies using other Cad programs. Onshape give me as a design consultan possibility to cooperate with other designers I don't have to invest in expensive cad programs. It is easy to present and discuss design development in project groups. The pricing is fair set.

Cons
Missing some funktionalities i.e. In my project with rock drill rigs I need to position boom and feed (7 degrees of freedom) to different positions. I hope a nice feature to handle the movement will come. A great benefit for onshape is the ability to transfer files but the recipian must have a license and they are reluctant to invest in a license . A possibility to temporarily give rights on the fly to load files with a free license can be a solution

Fully featured CAD package that's affordable for small businesses and startups, with > 90% of the features, for a much more reasonable price. Having it on the cloud means I can CAD even from my Chromebook and mobile device, because it isn't limited by the computers specs.

Pros
I love not having to constantly email myself files or carry them around on pen drives, with all kinds of stupid "v011_final_real_modified" file names. Even when I used GrabCAD you still had to make sure the latest version was uploaded, but OnShape it's just THERE - I don't need to worry about whether I have the latest version if I'm travelling. The interface is clean, and though simple to get started with when coming from other CAD packages, it has a lot of more powerful features that you can get into with relative ease - FeatureScript and the git-style versioning to name a few. And I'm so done with making sure I have the latest version of whatever, and dealing with license servers and all that nonsense.

Cons
App store has increased range of features, but vary highly in quality and ease of use, especially in the creation of common real-world deliverables e.g. CAM & rendering. Minor gripe: not being able to group features and nest sketches under their corresponding features makes the feature tree often feel cluttered.

Exciting start to real cloud CAD

Used daily for 1-2 years

Relatively low cost of ownership thanks to the subscription model and the modest hardware requirement. Once learnt the system is faster to use than our previous CAD.

Pros
The new ways of working that the marketing talk pushes so hard really do have some significant advantages. The integrated version control is brilliant - unlimited undo, branching, merging and visual differencing. Real time collaboration works well but persuading suppliers to adopt a new process can be tricky. The subscription model of both licensing and software updates works well for us. One of the most impressive aspects has been the customer support. This software is a work-in-progress. The quality is good but as with all software, users find inventive ways to break things or try the impossible. When something hasn't worked as expected the in-built feedback tool works great. I've put in several 'bugs' and feature requests and always had a response within 24 hours. Bugs fixes have made it into the next monthly release. Low hardware requirements that aren't increased with every release.

Cons
Some feature sets are more developed than others. Drawings are still improving - quite a few 'manual' tools that you'd be used to from other packages are not yet available. For me the lack of 'configurations' is frustrating but I can see this ultimately being integrated with the versioning system and being awesome.
