ALERE overview

What is ALERE?

If you are comparing ERP systems, the differences that matter most rarely show up on a feature checklist. Most ERPs check the same boxes. ALERE differs in three structural ways that surface after go-live: it was built as a manufacturing system first, it is one vertically integrated system rather than connected modules from different lineages, and it is perpetually licensed, so you own your software and your data.

Manufacturing-first matters because real floors do not run to plan. Material gets over-issued, WIP gets scrapped, yields change, and engineering revisions land mid-job. ALERE was designed to record those exceptions as normal transactions rather than forcing workarounds, so the system reflects what actually happened. In practice that means editable routes and material lists that capture every cost, variance, and revision; BOMs with up to 25 indented levels and five bill types that push revisions directly to in-process work orders; finite-capacity scheduling with forward and backward logic; and a bucketless, time-phased MRP engine that generates work, transfer, and purchase orders automatically and reschedules existing inventory when demand shifts. Companies running MRP well often cut inventory 20 to 40 percent while improving on-time delivery.

Vertical integration matters because connectors are where ERP projects go wrong. In ALERE, accounting, inventory, production, sales, and CRM share one highly relational data model. Barcoding captures labor and material once, at the source, and every transaction posts to a real-time, transaction-driven general ledger as it happens, with as-of reporting for any date you choose. There are no imports, exports, or reconciliation drift between a manufacturing package and an accounting package, because there is no seam between them. Lot, serial, and trait traceability, including lot costing, degradation, and expiration, ships out of the box with enough detail for the most stringent industries, with no custom development required.

Perpetual licensing matters because it changes the economics and the risk. There is no subscription lock-in, and your data stays entirely within your control, to access, manage, or port as you see fit. ALERE deploys cloud-hosted or on-premise, on your terms. Implementation typically requires little to no modification, and modules can be added later without re-implementation, so you can start with what you need and grow. ALERE's modification structure carries customizations, reports, and workflow changes forward version to version, which keeps upgrades faster and significantly less expensive than competing ERP systems, and keeps long-term cost of ownership low. Multi-company functionality, commission management, and integrations with Microsoft Outlook, Shopify, TaxJar, and Authorize.net round out the footprint.

ALERE is developed entirely in-house by TIW Technology's US-based team and has served discrete make-to-order, make-to-stock, and mixed-mode manufacturers and distributors since 1983, typically organizations of $5 million and up. More than 2,000 installations and 15,000 users later, many customers have relied on ALERE for a decade or more, supported by email, phone, and live-data troubleshooting from people who know manufacturing.

The fastest way to evaluate ALERE is to see it run your scenarios. Request a demo walkthrough tailored to your accounting and manufacturing workflows, and judge it against the system you have.
