Google Data Studio Makes Reporting Easier

Used weekly for 2+ years
Reviewed 2021-07-29
Review Source: Capterra

I had to find a cheap way to provide reporting for a client that would pull in data from a lot of different sources but the client didn't want to pay for a subscription to any of the commercially available options. I found Data Studio by mistake about three or four years ago and I haven't used any other "reporting" tool since discovering it.

Pros
What I like most about Google Data Studio is that it's free. Honestly, that's the main reason I use it, because I consult as a part-time gig with one-off projects and I simply cannot afford to buy into anyone else's "business analytics," "business intelligence," or "reporting" software tools. The fact that it works, is customizable, and is fairly easy to figure out if you've ever worked with web-based, data-driven visualizations are just icing on the cake.

Cons
Getting started with it can be a challenge, especially if you've never worked with "connectors" for database-driven projects before. The initial walk-through provided by Google is just enough to get you completely lost. I think more companies would use this tool if they provided a better introduction to how to properly set up your projects.

Very useful application, for what it is proposed. And its price is quite good for what it provides.

Pros

Cons
Some complications with the fill fields but from there it does not get complicated.

Data Studio an excellent option if you already have Gsuite

Easy of use if you have little experience on data management, good reports/dashboard views, and as it is fully integrated with other google apps, then you can share your dashboard with other users and it is very intuitive and easy to share..

Pros
It is included with no extra cost, if you already have gsuite then you may explore GDS so you can have some reporting and dashboards with the same info you already have in google docs

Cons
connectors to SQL database have to be made with 3rd party, normally they will charge a monthly fee, for large amount of data this could be expensive arround 300-500 usd/mo so this is the only deal braker ive found.

We're using Google Data Studio for weekly reporting and visualization of our marketing and sales data

Pros
I like the fact that Google Data Studio integrates with almost all the tools teams use right now and helps create customizable visualizations seamlessly. Another cool thing is the range of features it offers to compete with all major players in the market but at such an impressive pricing

Cons
I found Google Data Studio to be pretty satisfactory to our requirements and did not find any cons in the tool

We use it regularly and get business value from it

Pros
Love the way that data is aggregated and presented in data studio. Clearly not as deep as Big Data tools like Tableau, but does add significant value with reports that you can build.

Cons
Not easy to set up all the reports and access all the data you want,

Powerful, amazing reports of my web applications and websites, for my customers!

Absolutely amazing. It's like I have landed on Mars! I have discovered so many cool features and things I could offer my client "at a cost", for "no cost on me".

Pros
This software can link up with your Google Analytics account and retrieve data from there. So instead of using the slopping reporting function inside Google Analytics, you can make use of the power offered by Google Data Studio. It can make simple, but sophisticated table-based data using columns (or calculated columns), to present your data in many ways. OR, you can choose to use one of the many types of graphics / charts offered in this software. Last but not least, there are tons of community and native reporting templates, you can simply just download and start using. I used to pay Megalytics for really crappy and limited reports. By migrating my deployments over to Google Data Studio, things are free, and does more than ever before. Delivering website / web application reports to my clients is no longer a luxurious thing.

Cons
User identifyiable information cannot be reported when linking up with Google Analytics. This includes things like email address.

GDS makes nice reusable dashboards without the need to log in to GA

Used weekly for 1-2 years
Reviewed 2021-04-06
Review Source: Capterra

My go-to tool for creating packaged dashboards. It's then easy to re-use them as templates for other organisations and not just for that particular website

Pros
The dashboards are more user-friendly and appealing than many of the other competitors out there. This can be important when trying to win over less tech savvy business colleagues who want a more colourful and easy to use view. Especially if all they require is a scheduled email containing a PDF.

Cons
Occasionally a certain tweak to a dashboard isn't possible, e.g. customising a bar graph's labels so they show the percentages rather than the absolute values. In this example you have to choose a less-preferred pie chart instead.

Pros
Considering GDS is free, it's a great value. The platform has come a long way since it's inception, and in my time using it, has continued to evolve in the right direction.

Cons
There are still a number of functions which can be done in GA which are difficult or impossible in GDS. Make sure you map out your reporting before setting out.

A Bit of a Learning Curve - But Great Once It Gets Going

Used monthly for less than 6 months
Reviewed 2020-12-23
Review Source: Capterra

The fact that Google provides it at no additional cost and that it integrates with most digital platforms such as Facebook/Instagram is the reason we continue to use Data Studio.

Pros
Data Studio is an acquired taste for me. As with most other Google tools, there are way too many features and functionalities packed into this. This is both good and bad for new users as one can quickly get overwhelmed. But once the reports are setup and all the metrics are tracking, the reports look beautiful and presenting results to a group or a team is a breeze. Supermetrics is an important integration for Data Studio which one should keep in mind and try to utilise if you are handling mutliple Google Ads, Analytics and Facebook accounts.

Cons
If you do not change the data sources when copying a report, if you change it later, the original report will also get affected which became a cause for embarrassment for us at one time. So be mindful of that. And be patient with yourself when working with data studio. It looks like quite the beast but it gets easier once you have a few report templates going - saves literally hours and hours of reporting time.

Data analytics tool in the cloud- a blessing for G-suite users

Used weekly for 6-12 months

Review Source: Capterra

It is a good tool without much hassle or any installation required. Directly runs in cloud and gets your work done straight away! We use for some monthly dashboards and the usual one or two visualization requirements. Would certainly recommend for it's value for money benefit.

Pros
One of the most productive feature is the ability to link with Google sheets and its integration with the Google platform/products. The collaboration features of G-suite are also evident in Data studio. It is simple at the moment, but gets the work done for quick and small-medium projects.

Cons
The Geo-mapping is not great as compared to a tool like Tableau. The Data visualization is not completely customizable which leaves something to desire. You need a google account to work on it, so not for everyone.

Seeing many data sources in a single view with multiple date ranges and comparisons.

Pros
I would recommend every business used this, from small to large. The ability to combine and view google analytics, google ads and search console data is fantastic and gives you great insights into your business performance. There are also lots of templates available online to get you started for no cost.

Cons
The customisation has to come from someone with a fair bit of knowledge of the product when sharing with others. In the majority of times people will have to only have a view of the report and they won't really be able to amend or see other data within it. It is also a little slow when doing lots of data and changing the views.

Excellent Free-to-Use tool for BI

Despite that it's not the best functional BI tool, it really solves a lot of data needs.

Pros
What I most liked about this tool is that it makes so easy and secure to share reports with people in my organization (we have G-Suite accounts). Also, this tool have a perfect integration for reading data from Google Sheets.

Cons
As I said, the Free-to-Use comes at a cost: it lacks a wide variety of functionalities. For example: is not possible to connect to SQL Server databases, lacks support for a wide variety of charts (gauge) and is not possible to modify chart labels.

A must if you are using Google Analytics

Great so far, especially because the tools are free and is fully integrated with Google Analytics, so you don't have to code or know SQL.

Pros
As a person who doesn't work as a Data Analyst or Scientist, Data Studio allows you to create dashboards in a relatively intuitive way, as long as you have experience with Google Analytics. I really like the fact that there are standard dashboards that you can customize to show the data that you need, just by customizing the reports and graphs you can easily recognize the variables and values because it's fully integrated with GA you can even grab the segments and apply them.

Cons
Nothing, as I have never gone deeper into the functions. But If you are not a Data Analyst or you are not into data, keep it with the premade dashboards. The options and customizations can appear a little intimidating.

Data Studio Review

Used monthly for less than 6 months
Reviewed 2021-02-08
Review Source: Capterra

Overall, my experience with Data Studio has been mixed. The learning curve is definitely steep and it is not the easiest tool in terms of collaboration compared to other options on the market. Importing data can often be a pain and it is sometimes quite difficult to set up connections to refresh data sources, which makes reporting more manual and time-consuming than it should be.

Pros
Data Studio is an extremely powerful tool for reporting and has allowed our team to share out extremely in-depth reports with our clients. It's suite of features is vast and allows our teams to provide highly valued insights into data we previously never had access to. The software is extremely flexible when it comes to customization to fit the needs of our client on a case-by-case basis, which is extremely important since each client has different preferences, nuances, and objectives and Data Studio makes that customization super simple.

Cons
Since Data Studio has so many in-depth reporting features, the software itself can be confusing to adapt to and the learning curve for reporting is quite steep if you have no prior experience. It took our team a long time to learn and adapt the software and collaboration on one report was often difficult, which resulted in one member being delegated to handle reporting responsibilities. It would be nice if the Data Studio was able to incorporate task management and campaign tracking alongside its powerful reporting abilities; I think that would really push Data Studio above the competition from software such as Domo and Tableau.
