How we picked the 4 top rated products

We chose the high-performing solutions on this list based on verified user ratings on our site. Depending on available data, qualifying products either had to be among the most user-reviewed or the most searched-for products in the learning management system software category. They also needed to have sufficient reviews about communication management, have a minimum user rating of 3 out of 5 for that feature, and show evidence of U.S. market presence. We then added a distinction for the product with the highest rating for communication management based on our proprietary ratings and reviews. Sponsorship or client status has no influence on the selection of these products, but it may impact the order in which products appear.

User insights about the communication management feature

Reviewers indicate that Google Classroom offers multiple communication options, including private messaging, commenting on posts, and using the Stream tab for announcements. They find the integration with Google Mail beneficial for syncing messages. Users appreciate the audio and video facilities for enhancing communication, but some note that the platform could improve notifications for student-teacher interactions. They also mention the importance of communication tools for providing feedback and keeping parents informed.
“Google classroom does not notify student when comments have been made by teacher, and does not notify student when teacher has responded to student comment which is often request for help. The whole exchange between the two goes by the wayside. ”

Moodle logo

User insights about the communication management feature

Reviewers feel that Moodle's communication management is somewhat limited and could benefit from a more user-friendly interface. They appreciate the ability to send announcements and updates, as well as the integration with email for notifications. Users report that Moodle offers various ways to interact, such as forums and direct messages, but they often rely on external email systems for more effective communication. Some reviewers suggest that Moodle could improve its communication features to better support student-teacher interactions.
“The level of communication through the Moodle platform is relatively low because usually students are encouraged to communicate with their professors via their school email or by setting up an in person meeting. This platform is not geared towards communication and as such, these features are not typically used. ”

User insights about the communication management feature

Reviewers highlight that Blackboard Learn provides several communication tools, including announcements, discussion boards, and virtual office hours. They find these features useful for facilitating interaction between students and professors. However, users mention that the platform's communication management can be confusing and not very intuitive. They also note that integration with email could be better, as messages often get conflated across different courses. Despite these issues, reviewers appreciate the platform's ability to protect student information and manage communication securely.
“Communication management is especially important in considerations related to BlackBoard, because the tool provides instructors with important details about their students. Successful educational experiences rely on the ability of instructors to convey material clearly, consistently, and safely. Educators are bound legally to protect student information, such as names, email addresses, and contact details, and BlackBoard Learn readily protects these data by preventing peer-to-peer communication outside of course discussion boards. Although Blackboard Learn allows instructors to schedule announcement posts, preview student pictures, solicit optional anonymous feedback, and connect meaningfully to student information systems for grades, messages from the LMS are often issued from a single email alias, so messages often get conflated across different courses. Ergo, although BlackBoard Learn offers real-time class email announcements, the import of such communications often goes unnoticed by student audiences. The tool has much room for improvement with communication management. ”
