TERRIBLE revenue cycle management

Reviewed 2 years ago
Pros

Everything except RCM. It is an easy software to use.

Cons

There is so much about RCM that is bad. I am currently doing the majority of the work because it is taking 2 to 3 months for payments or correspondence to be posted. They are taking a percentage of our revenue and I am the one doing all of the work. It is completely unfair. They blame it on the pandemic but that makes no sense since this is a new problem.

Athena Review

Reviewed 8 years ago

The software and reporting are from Athena are nice but more improvements to the co-sourcing model would make it better!

Pros

Reporting out of Athena is very nice as you can run ad hoc reports and easily put into EXCEL and quickly put together a pivot table. Much nicer than our old antiquated system!

Cons

I generally like the software, my only concerns are with the co-source/customer service. Generally, turn around times on tickets are much longer than I prefer. When I have an issue, I would like a resolution within 2 days MAX especially for simple fixes. Before we had the co-sourcing model, we would have fixed issue right then without all of the wait!

Athena Review

Reviewed 5 years ago

This is the only medical record system I have used so overall I am pleased with the system.

Pros

The overall presentation is simple and functional; the schedule preview page is one of my favorite features and the ability to select which providers schedules you wish to preview allows for easy access.

Cons

Inability to complete full psych treatment plans directly in the system; we have to use a separate system to develop ISPs and transfer into Athena.

Athena vs RCM

Reviewed 5 years ago

Overall, Athena is a good EMR / EHR to use. You can also sign up for their billing portion and pay less to an RCM team so it gives you good options.

Pros

I like the fact that it gives clients the ability to both have an EMR / EHR and also outsource billing at the same time.

Cons

Sometimes the Athena team doesn't talk or convey information back to the billing management team. This can cause confusion in cases like accounts that have been sent to collections.

Athena Review

Reviewed 8 years ago

Overall I am very happy with Athena. I do have some issues with getting problems resolved. It would be nice to have a contact person who could help your practice. It was great in the beginning when we were going through training but now it is difficult to get questions answered.

Pros

I am very happy with the ease of submitting claims and the follow-up by Athena.

Cons

I think there are parts that are not user friendly and confusing about how to do. I have more or less given up on trying to call and get an issue resolved. I have spent lots of time just holding for someone to answer a question. Most of the time the first person you get can not answer the question

Athena :The Complete Set up

Reviewed 8 years ago

I have had ups and downs. But the Support is excellent so the Downs have not been as miserable as they could have been

Pros

A COMPLETE PRODUCT: registration to Billing and collecting payments

Cons

I would like to have all features through the same Provider instead of going through outside providers. Also needs to connect with Care EVERYWHERE so we could see information from all other EHRs especially EPIC users like the major Hospitals that see our patients in their Emergency Rooms

Straight to the point

Reviewed 8 years ago

I believe Athena's billing system is easy to navigate and use; the scheduling system is fine however there are some things that I wish were corrected (such as the reminder call glitches)

Pros

Insurance "View Detail" function is great for easy review of a plan.

Cons

Reminder calls are not consistent - at times patients are called months in advance for an exam; ideally, the call should be around 5 days before the exam. New GPIS system is okay, but not as different (or easy) as we were told it would be.

EMR in outpatient surgery clinic

Reviewed 8 years ago
Pros

Athenahealth is easy to learn and train other personnel for use. It is also easily adaptable to physician's preferences. Athena service has also updated features based on feedback from physicians which is great.

Cons

I wish the training video was geared towards clinic use. The training sessions showed me how to use different billing features but was missing information on how to use the chart and schedule. This was quite a few years ago when we first started with Athena so this may have changed already, but I'm not aware. I also would like training videos for new personnel to watch. Right now, office personnel are training new employees. I know other EMRs have training videos which one can watch which would be helpful and more efficient use of time. The mobile app isn't very good so I can't do much on my phone. That really needs to be fixed.

Athena

Reviewed 7 years ago

Athena is a great product if you are just going to use it and do the billing on your own (in house). The monthly cost is outrageous given all of the errors they make on posting and the terrible customer support. We also experienced many issues with the reminder call service leaving blank or incorrect messages. I can say that the program is VERY easy to navigate, the patient portal is a nice layout, the interfaces work very well for labs, faxes and pharmacy requests. Overall I would not recommend Athena to anyone because of the cost and the horrible customer service and repeated billing mistakes.

Pros

user friendly sorts electronic faxes electronic orders assists with MU reporting nice/patient friendly patient portal appointment reminders AR/productivity reports are easy to read and run

Cons

customer service is severely lacking chronic problems with posting payments EOB erros document issues the cost is crazy high issues with reminder calls not being sent correctly

Our small family practice with two doctors and 1 physician's assistant has been using athenaCollector since 2001, making it much easier for my front office staff to concentrate on what is really important--our patients! They do not have to waste time with billing problems, posting checks, chasing insurance denials-athena does it all for us. In 2008 we started athenaClinicals with athenaCommunicator, and the same can be said for our clinical staff. We can concentrate on giving the best care possible to our patients. AthenaClinicals makes it easy to do this, and with their guidance we were able to receive meaningful use money in 2012, and we have already attested for 2013 meaningful use, so we expect to recieve our 2nd installment from Medicare very soon. Implementation was relatively painless, and we were able to ramp up to full speed much faster than expected, within several weeks, when we thought it might be several months. In our case, the day we went live we "saved" $25-30,000 immediately as we no longer needed our transcriptionist. Then within six months, after all charts were abstracted, we no longer needed 2 file clerks, as the system is truly paperless, so there is nothing to file. Because Athena does much of the work for us, we run a "lean, mean" operation, and I like to say we can "do more with less", making our small practice very profitable. Athena is a forward thinking company, always striving to improve their product. Problems, as few as they are, are handled quickly and efficiently. Our 5th year anniversary is coming up april 30th, and I feel this was one of the best decisions I made in my 25 years of practice.

Best EHR on the market

Reviewed 7 years ago
Pros

Athena is simple, easy to use, and intuitive for the user. Take this with a grain of salt since no EHR is perfect, but after using 10+ in different situations Athena Clinicals takes the cake. The layout is simple to understand and charting is straightforward.

Cons

Athena has some glitches that all seem to be pretty random. Unfortunately, fixing them has been a trial and error situation but most we can work around.

AthenaHealth EMR

Reviewed 8 years ago

My practice has used AthenaHealth EMR since 2010 and it has helped us qualify for meaningful use since the very beginning. It is fairly intuitive how the EMR flows and writing notes is relatively easy once you get the hang of it. We also utilize their practice management/billing options which improved our cash flow. Overall, it is a high quality product that I can recommend to fellow Family Medicine doctors.

Pros

Relatively easy to use EMR for documenting patient encounters.

Cons

Hard to get custom reports unless you pay for additional support.

Nice idea, but.....

Reviewed 8 years ago

It has nice features, and after the April upgrade, it ran very fast. But, after the May update, it slowed down again. The slowness has cost us up to 10 minutes per visit.

Pros

The new streamlined Athenaclinicals is mostly better. It is easier to navigate, once you suss out the architecture of the product.

Cons

Some things are too streamlined, to where you have to hunt for basic things that have been taken off the main feature. And..... IT HAS BECOME SLOW AGAIN, AND I MEAN SLOW!!!!

Athena Practice Management

Reviewed 8 years ago

I have been with Athena for 10 years now and love the Practice Management side. We do not use the EMR side so I can not comment on that. I would definitely recommend anyone that is looking for a great PM system Athena is the #1 by far. The reports are easy to read and build and the customer support is also amazing. We left the PM side when we joined a multi specialty group for a year. It was the biggest mistake we made and now we have come back to Athena and we will never leave them.

Pros

very easy to navigate

Cons

I have none

Improving!

Reviewed 8 years ago

In my opinion, Athena is a great program to use. After the recent "Streamline" update the staff has had difficulties adjusting to the new look but doctors have found it to be more convenient. I think overall Athena continues to improve with updates and I have noticed many other medical offices have started to use Athena.

Pros

Recent activity in the patient's chart. Doctors have recommended the new streamline update because it makes it easier for them to dictate.

Cons

Too much clicking and difficult to find documents and orders. For example, not everyone scans documents in the same place. Unable to show patient alerts or reminders needed during an appointment. For example, the patient is in pain management but continues to ask for pain medication during an appointment. There is not a way to flag this for the doctor. Athena slows down while trying to put in orders from time to time. No ability to change patient status or room number while in the exam. No longer shows patient body part in the top right of the screen while in the encounter. Unable to open an order listed on the left of the patient's chart, such as medications to see what user created the order.

Physician

Reviewed 8 years ago

User on current streamline for 6-8 months. Classic for about a year. TEDIOUS!!!! Too much scrolling and clicking. Orders can be difficult to hone down and there is no options for "favorites" If you only use one lab, you are ok. If you need 2-3 labs then it will slow your workflow. Prescription writing and history is also slow and tedious.

Pros

Managing quality markers; outstanding billing

Cons

Distracting, noisy, difficult to impossible to customize in an enterprise environment. SLOWED my productivity overall and has not recovered. Frequent (weekly) times that server connectivity is spotty though they usually recover fairly quickly (not today)

I work at a 7 MD and 1 NP pediatric practice in Massachusetts and Connecticut. We were on paper (looseleaf and staples and rubber stamps) until late 2009 when we were rescued by athenaHealth. The beauty of athenaClinicals is that there is only one version of athenaClinicals, and that is the updated version. They update for us and it is constantly being updated. The great thing about athena is that you don't "buy" it, you are basically a subscriber and they do all the updates, all the back office work for you. The implementation process went beautifully, we worked really hard to get it right at the start so we (purposefully) overtrained ourselves. We knew the ins and out of the system and we prepared all the charts as well. The training and preparation for implementation was 12 weeks. We decreased our schedule for 4 weeks BUT by 2 weeks we were back to our pre-implementation speed. We have never looked back. athenaClinicals is easy to use, quite intuitive and very flexible. Many different physicians can use the system in their own way. The customer support is wonderful - the people who answer our calls are knowledgeable and follow up. We work with Athena as as partners. We are doing very well financially and have enhanced our bottom line through efficiencies and through charge capture. We are not coding higher. We know that because athena has amazing report writing and data mining capabilities. All that said, none of us, even the skeptics within our practice, would ever go back to paper, nor would we even entertain the possibility of changing EHRs. Unlike many of our colleagues in other practices, we are exceptionally happy with our selection of athenaHealth for our EHR!

Satisfactory EHR for charting, but lacking in billing and A/R support

Reviewed 7 years ago

I'd explore other EHRs first.

Pros

Ease of use clinical documentation, templates are fairly user friendly and help expedite the charting process at point of care

Cons

What's the use of good charting when they cannot sufficiently process claims? They keep losing us money on so many claims. Won't complete certain claim forms properly. Their customer service stinks, don't help us with this issue to see it through despite so many attempts by our billing office. I get the sense AthenaHealth knows they are too large to care about just one client. Such an arrogant way of thinking.
