Braze overview

What is Braze?

Braze is a cloud-based customer engagement platform that collects and activates first-party data to deliver personalized, real-time messaging across email, SMS, push notifications, WhatsApp, in-app messages, Content Cards, web, LINE, RCS Business Messaging, and paid media channels including Meta, Google, Pinterest, Snapchat, TikTok, and Criteo. Marketers use the platform to build audience segments, orchestrate cross-channel customer journeys, run experiments, and measure engagement outcomes from a single interface. Braze serves 2,500+ B2C brands across more than 70 countries, spanning retail and eCommerce, financial services and fintech, media and entertainment, health and wellness, CPG, and QSR and on-demand food and beverage delivery.

The platform is built around four core components: a web-based dashboard UI, mobile and web SDKs, a REST API for server-side data ingestion and triggering, and a bi-directional data platform with zero-copy integrations to data warehouses including Snowflake, Databricks, Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, Microsoft Azure, and AWS S3. Canvas, the platform's no-code drag-and-drop journey builder, supports branching logic, delays, audience syncs, and real-time triggers. Audience segmentation tools construct dynamic user profiles and segments based on behavioral data, purchase history, and predictive scores. Experimentation capabilities cover A/B/n testing of copy, creative, timing, channel mix, and promotions, with conversion dashboards, global holdout groups, and per-channel engagement metrics for measurement.

Braze includes an integrated AI and machine learning suite spanning decisioning, prediction, content generation, optimization, recommendations, and autonomous execution. Key capabilities include reinforcement learning-based channel and timing optimization, predictive churn and purchase scoring, AI-generated message copy and personalization logic, deep learning product recommendations, and natural language-to-SQL segment and report building. The platform supports granular user permissions and meets enterprise compliance standards including HIPAA, ISO 27001, and SOC 2 Type 2. Hosted infrastructure provides auto-scaling and multi-region support. Over 140 turnkey partner integrations connect Braze to existing martech and data stacks, and pricing is based on actively engaged users rather than total database size or seat licenses.

Pros
“The combination of real‑time / event‑driven capabilities + strong segmentation + cross‑channel messaging — when set up well, you can treat customers very contextually: responding to actions, in the right channel, with relevant content.”

“Implementation requires technical/data/engineering resources; for non‑technical teams, some of the advanced features (events, integrations, dynamic content, liquid templating) can have a learning curve.”

“It enables us to optimize customer journeys, run reliable A/B tests, and closely track engagement and revenue impact. While there are occasional challenges with usability and the overhead of maintaining clean templates, the platform’s flexibility and performance outweigh these downsides.”

Cons
“The current integration with our own digital ID is still subpar, this makes it difficult to track which customer profile braze is using on our campaigns, as one customer can have multiple profiles, the support from braze engineers on this regard could be better.”

Head of Digital Transformation

“My biggest complaint so far is not being able to access HTML code in templated emails.”

“Large data ingestion of our flat audience files can be slow at times and create a bottleneck and wait times.”

Segment

Integration rating: 4.5 (4)

We use Segment as the main data pipeline and Pendo as the product-experience layer on top of it. Segment sends standardized events and user traits into Pendo, so we only have to instrument tracking once and can reuse the same schema across tools.

Shopify is important because it helps connect store and revenue context with marketing activity. It is more useful to review advertising performance when conversion and revenue signals can be considered alongside campaign data.
