Looker FAQs

Q. What is Looker used for?

Looker is an enterprise business intelligence platform that combines data analytics, embedded analytics capabilities, and application development features to help organizations explore and share insights in real time. The platform is designed for businesses across multiple industries that seek to transform raw data into actionable intelligence through a combination of semantic modeling, interactive dashboards, and API-first architecture. Looker operates within the Google Cloud ecosystem and supports use cases that require governed data analysis, custom data applications, and scalable analytics for both internal business intelligence and external customer-facing scenarios. The platform features a universal semantic modeling layer that provides a single source of truth for business metrics through Looker Modeling Language. Organizations can define and govern data relationships centrally and ensure consistency across all consumption points. A conversational analytics capability, powered by the Gemini model for Google Cloud, allows users to query data using natural language. Looker offers enterprise dashboards with real-time data access, drill-down capabilities to row-level detail, and repeatable analysis built on governed data models. Embedded analytics capabilities enable fully interactive visualizations that integrate into applications through comprehensive API coverage. Extensions integrate directly with Vertex AI to support custom AI workflows and advanced analytics. Looker is available in three edition tiers. The Standard edition is designed for organizations with fewer than fifty users and includes one production instance, a set of standard and developer users, upgrades, and limits on query and administrative API calls. The Enterprise edition offers enhanced security features for a variety of internal business intelligence use cases and includes higher limits on query and administrative API calls. The Embed edition supports the deployment and maintenance of external analytics and custom applications at scale and includes the highest limits on query and administrative API calls. User licensing is available in three levels. Developer users have full access to development mode and API interfaces. Standard users can explore data and create dashboards. Viewer users have read-only access to dashboards and reports. Native integration with Google Cloud services includes data warehousing through BigQuery, productivity tools in Workspace, machine learning workflows in Vertex AI, and marketing activation through Google Analytics. The platform also supports multicloud and hybrid cloud architectures with connectors for Snowflake, Redshift, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server. The Looker Marketplace provides prebuilt data models and applications for use cases such as audit logging, cost management, and marketing analytics. The platform offers query and administrative API functionality, private networking configuration, single sign-on via Cloud IAM, and integration with the broader Google Cloud security ecosystem. Integration with Looker Studio and Connected Sheets enables users to transform sheet data into interactive visualizations and to bring LookML-modeled data into spreadsheet environments for analysis.
